Pros:
* Base building element is well designed with many options
* Specializations give you a real incentive to interact with the player base at large, promoting a community on your server.
* End game PvP provides one of the best end game currencies available - you are not forced to focus on passive base generation alone to be competitive.
* Many different consumables and unique effects that provide many options for PvE and PvP, promoting different playstyles and gun choices.
* Servers are locked at 6000-8000 players to preserve server quality.

Cons:
* PvP is only relevant at the end game, if you only want to PvP you need to do 20-40 hours of PvE stuff to at least have tier V weapons.
* While the framerate is stable on my system, the game runs my PC very hot, frequently maxing out my CPU after playing for extended periods of time.
* The building system does lag out quite frequently in the pvp areas, forcing you to close/open the build menu and re-select what you wanted to build.
* You will probably not be able to play with any of your friends that play this game as many of the original servers are locked.

Very fun. Play it. Kinda like the original FEAR (the only good one). It runs great too and doesn't drop frames at all even with lots of stuff happening on screen. I'm about done with it after 11 hours, and that is playing the game all the way through on extreme at the start. I might go back and do the higher difficulty in the future with stuff unlocked, so probably a good 20 hours of content based on the story and mission elements alone.

There are trial type things as well that you can play, but I have not tried any of them yet. You access them in the main base, but don't really feel the need to do them to unlock things, the game can be completed without accessing it.

Overhyped, underplayed. Very quickly stopped playing to go deal with racist players in open lfd + lfd2 lobbies because those games are just better. I don't understand why any new zombie survival game would be released without a similar multiplayer to lfd1 + 2. They perfected the genre almost 20 years ago now. Don't waste your money, go play lfd2 or lfd if you and three of your friends are looking for zombie action, just be sure to ignore the few players remaining in those games unless you want to be called every gamer word under the sun for not knowing a secret jump in a 20 year old game.

11/24/23 Edit: Added lfd style multiplayer. changed all the cards to be available at once in campaign mode. added tunnels that end the round and bring you a level to farm skulls for new burn cards. game is fun now

arcade shooter version of tarkov, no hackers yet in my 50+ deploys, get in now and enjoy it!

edit: 460~ deploys, encountered 3 blatantly obvious hackers, and a few sus players who may have just been better than me. game is still a blast

2024 edit:
The game is great now. Either the game needed like 7 more years of development time, or 7 years for my taste in games to become way worse. But yeah, play it. Online mp works now, no crashes. There is a "too few players, restarting game (no stats recorded)" style system now for ranked (great). The campaign is a lot of fun too, with a couple buddies.

Review based on halo 2 multiplayer.

-No voting for map selection in pre-game lobby, unlike how it was in halo 2.
-Like the old halo 2, grenades will sometimes get thrown but go into another dimension.
-Cannot choose what servers to play on, you get thrown into random regions.

Aside from these 3 issues, multiplayer is still fun. Queue up with friends from your area to increase the chance of your team getting a nearby server location. A couple new modes from the anniversary version are fun. The ricochet game mode is great.

***TL;dr: GAME BROKE, DON'T BUY IT***

I really wanted this game to work. I really did. I have more play time in gears of war 1 and ultimate edition than I do every steam game on my account combined.

I only care about gears for the Versus.

GLARING ISSUES WITH VERSUS RIGHT NOW THAT MAKE THE GAME UNPLAYABLE:
1. "You have been kicked from the game. You have been removed from the game." For some reason you will be at random removed from games for no apparent reason. You can then rejoin these games, and the game will probably kick you again, for no reason. My record right now is 4 times kicked out of a single ranked KOTH game vs. the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ enemy team in the world who still almost lost.

2. MATCH WILL START AT 60 FPS, BY END OF MATCH STRUGGLE TO STAY ABOVE 30 FPS. Tried two setups - one with a nvidia 960 GTX, all low setings, no Vsync, Gsync on or off, 144 HZ or 60HZ, nothing matters on the nVidia 960 GTX. I have a second PC with a 1070 in it. Same issue, but it doesn't take effect until the 3rd round of a match. If you restart your PC, you'll be good for 1 match maybe until you start getting dropped frames. THIS FPS ISSUE IS BY FAR THE WORST ISSUE WITH THE GAME CURRENTLY.

I've not really given a Gears since 3 a chance like I have this one - all of these hours on this game are in versus. The multiplayer IS A ♥♥♥♥ LOAD OF FUN when it WORKS. This is from the viewpoint of someone who poured thousands of hours into the 1st gears and the Ultimate Edition remake.

This game would be a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of fun once they fix the two issues above. I really think this game has the chance to be amazing - The Coalition developed the Gears Ultimate Edition remake which was perfect, but the current framerate issues that are plaguing the game make it unplayable.

Until then, I strongly recommend that nobody buys Gears 5 on PC, as you will literally not be able to 1v1 players of equal skill at anything below 60 FPS in this game.
