Early Access Review
This game is a first person roguelite hack and slash and an absolute ode to Diablo 1 in visual aesthetic as well as the music of Diablo 1 and 2. Whilst the visuals may seem weird when watching gameplay, they make total sense in the game as they help you see the enemies within the murky dungeons. The way it is rendered looks like oldskool 90s CGI animations but in a game. Which is really nice and nostalgic. It is like you get to play in a weird trippy version of a 90s game cinematic. Namely Diablo I's. It is very fun. I installed the game two days before making this review and have 10 hours already.

A few more dungeon tile sets and the game would be 100%. I would reccomend a brown variant of Dungeon, a fire variant of caves and unique side bosses that may or may not appear in a run. Just to further instil the massive ode to Diablo 1 that this game already is. Oh and Voice acting. I normally don't say a game is better with voice acting but if you can find some good VA's I honestly think Helena would benefit from it as well as having some books that read some vague lore that adds to the vibe.

Straight up psy trance. Honestly I love trance in games. So rarely done now days, at least in my collection of games.

I like the soundtrack more than the gameplay, not that the game isnt fun but these tracks really carry it imo.

Sandscale Show Down is so good man I feel like it should be in one of the old tomb raider movies. The Whispering Grove is really cinematic.

The goal is to stealthily navigate a rainy island, rescuing friends while evading patrolling guards.

It has simplistic and charming art style that is further enhanced by the cute and amtospheric sound design. However, with only one level the experience can feel somewhat brief, although there are secrets scattered throughout the map for the completionists out there.

In conclusion, Grey Scout offers a brief but enjoyable experience that's certainly worth a look if you're seeking a quick and charming stealth adventure. It is a bit on the pricey side considering what you get out of it even though it does not cost a lot of money. If you play this game once, you will not get one hour's worth of gameplay. So maybe get it on sale?

If they released the OST for this game I'd buy it.

But other than that, its a trippy cute soulslike-y game but super simplified and somewhat easier.

You play this game for the vibe more than any ground breaking gameplay. And that vibe is on point.

The gameplay loop is decent enough, the biggest let down is the lack of a soundtrack I'd say. But if you play it with your fav game OSTs its actually pretty good.

I cant believe I have not written anything about this game yet, but i also totally understand why. So yeah I wrote the rant, now for the weird esoteric words that describe the game in as less words as possible. Not all these things are literally in the game but if you like any of these things you might like the game.

RTS. RPG. Strategy. Stoner Rock. Grunge. Hardtek. Raggatek. Oldskool Dubstep. Drum n Bass. "fun" substances. Philosophy. Deserts. Dirty and tattered clothes. Ninjas and Samurais. Gasmasks and Goggles. Steampunk. Punk. The Struggle for Freedom. Absolute tyranny. Paradoxical things.

This game is a paradox. It is extremely.. jank in many ways and even unfinished in some parts but not in places you'd really bother noticing in your first play throughs. But that can be patched with mods. But it's still the best post apocalyptic RPG I have ever played. And there is no radiation. No nukes none of that really. The game hardly even tells you what happened, you just kinda know its a post apocalypse by looking at stuff. In this respect it did what fallout should have tried to do in one of its many releases which explores the much more realistic concept of would people even remember the old world? probably not. They'd just tribalize and commit atrocities on each other so many times that the eldest leaders left are probably in their 20s. Yet the game doesnt explicitly state that, it is my interpritation of what I see in the game.

So yeah story is great, art is great, music is great even when its annoying.

Gameplay is frustrating yet satisfying at the same time. You are constantly pulling your hair out trying to keep people alive in this harsh world with hardly a moments rest, if you try and be active and do things, and when you finally do find that moment of peace if feels so good but then you know its all going to happen again when you find stronger enemies. Yet its extremely jank, and you can exploit stuff and like you have to be the type of person that either likes exploiting stuff or enjoys purposefully not exploiting despite knowing the exploits to really enjoy it because other wise you will find your self yusing exploits to "beat the game" and then getting bored cuz the journey, which is what this game is about, is over.

Lots of mods to try but a lot of people are bad are keeping Kenshi's vibe in their mods so its mixed bag. The setting is way less loose than like Elderscrolls so its very easy to kill the immersion.

Normally I do not like games that are basically a movie that you have to play and you do not get choices on how the story plays out. However, because of Hellblade's premise, it is a glorious exception to the rule.

Mainly the sound design, art style, and narrative carry the game. But combat can be pretty fun.

I tried playing it a second time through to film the raytracing update but, very much like a movie, it is much less magical the second time around.

Still worth every penny for that first play through if you like deep philosophical vibes.

When this game came out I found it fun cuz of its art style but the actual gameplay to be kinda meh. But then some random politically motivated people decided to censor the art style. It is ironic how people who claim to be fighting fascism and that kinda thing often go on to do the fascist authoritarian stuff like censoring stuff.

Good job hypocrits :D

You hear that super moody music in the trailer? That dark gritty industrial vibe? Yeah no ingame I have to listen to this awful cheesy metal music on loop. I love metal but yknow when its like "Video game metal" and it just kinda feels hollow? Yeah its that kinda metal. Wtf I was hoping for what ever vibe you were advertising in the trailer not what is in game. Hopefully later levels will change my mind.

Also really weird controls. I get you wanted to throw back to some kinda really ancient era in pc gaming when mice were not used but I mean maybe you could have modernised it a bit? The original DOOM modernised its controls and its great because of it. Ppl who want full retro can have it and people who dont can use modern control layouts and everyone is happy. But here, nope. get used to doing everything on your keyboad.

The turn system is very interesting though, I like it alot.

Still though, did not meet the vibe I was hoping for. I know its not normally the biggest deal right I can just listen to other music whilst playing the game. But hyperstrange releases? I buy them entirely for their vibe. Like Elderborn was my first and it was so good at hitting the vibe of what it was going for. RAYZE and Blood West are the same.

One thing Hyperstrange get perfect (almost) everytime is vibes. I havent had this much fun beating times since F-Zero on N64. Decent music, you will like some tracks more than others. Graphics are simple but will basically never age either. The speed you reach is crazy. I know it might sound weird but if you like playing characters like Androxus in Paladins or Mcree from Overwatch you might like this too because its a lot of crazy flicks to get the fastest speeds possible.

I know I only cleared a handful of levels but I can tell this game is going to be a fun game to come back to.

Also the AI girl in the main trailer says it perfectly. Simple? Yes. Easy? No.

EDIT: After coming back to it for another play and beating all the levels I had done in section 1 again but to be in the top 30% of the leader boards as well as trying the levels in section 2 I can say this game is crazy good for the simple premise. My palms were so sweaty from trying to flick shot a bunch of targets really quickly whilst zooming past near misses at 800-900 mph.

With this now being my fav of the hyperstrange games I own I kinda wish there were a few features. 1: a multiplayer take turns mode. This could help facilitate race tournaments for this amazing game. 2: A map maker. Because the game is simple it should not be too crazy to implement and map makers will always increase the replay ability of games. 3: A soundtrack to download cuz some of those tracks are dope.
