Nice little bonus item that can help in a pinch, but on Normal, it isn't essential as enemies drop relics pretty frequently. At only $1 though, I think it's worth having.

Intro

Ah, Lords of Shadow. Developed by MercurySteam with help from Climax Studios comes another entry in the storied Castlevania franchise. This one has been compared to God of War, and even Shadow of the Colossus in some of it's boss fights. Does it live up to God of War or other character action titles?

I'd say yeah.

Graphics

The game takes you through various environments that are still pretty stunning today. I really like the art direction, and when the camera zooms out to show you a wide shot of certain vistas, it's very pretty. I do have one small caveat with the graphics though. Sometimes there are video files that seem to be compressed, or taken from the PS3/360 versions of the game, and it's a bit jarring going from a nice fluid cut scene into those. It's not a deal breaker, but I wanted to mention it.
Character models look great, and the environments are beautiful too.

On the PC, the game allows a resolution of up to 1080p, and runs at a silky smooth 60 fps. You can also modify some graphics settings if you can't exactly hit that 60 fps target.

Gameplay

The game play is fairly standard for these kind of games. You have area attacks and heavy attacks, for multiple foes or just one. You do get some fun moves, but I relied on most of the same combos throughout the game. I also feel like air combat isn't as fluid as in GoW, as most of my moves didn't reliably connect in the air. The parry system is pretty cool though, and the main way you heal or do more damage is neat. You have these two magic meters, one for healing and one for more damage. They can get filled by focus, which is given when you find a fountain, or when you defeat enemies in combat. If you do well in combat, you'll fill up a focus bar which goes down completely on one hit. This is used to gain focus orbs on each subsequent hit on enemies, so having a full focus bar and using AoE attacks is a great way to gain magic. I do wish the focus bar only went down a little bit on hit, or at least maybe halfway. Doing different combos is a great way to fill up the focus meter quicker, which means more healing energy or more damage dealing depending on the situation. To aid you in combat, you also have sub weapons such as daggers or holy water. They are very useful, and can definitely help you get out of a bad situation. The daggers though are really only useful the early game, as most of the other monsters you face are resistant to them.

This game also takes inspiration from Uncharted in it's climbing and platforming sections. These are fun for brief respite between combat arenas, though some of them do take a while to get through. I did have some trouble where Gabriel wouldn't grab the ledge, and that caused some deaths. You also have to solve various puzzles throughout the adventure, and if you complete you'll get experience which you can use to upgrade Gabriel's abilities. The puzzles are all pretty good, and some of them really make you think.

Music / Replay Value

The music in the game is very great, and while the songs aren't what you'd call catchy, they do an excellent job of keeping you invested in the world and story. The game also offers collectibles for you to find in the form of health and magic upgrades, and sub weapon upgrades for some slight replay value in the levels. Speaking of replay value, there isn't just the upgrades to collect. Each level has a trial you can complete, which is used to fill up your completion percentage. For more replay value, you can also finish each level on the hardest difficulty, which is only available after finishing the story.

Story

The story in the game is actually pretty good, albeit the ending is pretty confusing where the main character kinda changes personality abruptly. To put it simply, you play as Gabriel Belmont, a warrior for the Brotherhood of Light out on a quest to defeat the Lords of Shadow, and to find a mask that is said to be able to bring back dead people. It has some great voice acting, and the cut-scenes are well directed too. The story has some big twists and turns, and all in all was pretty good. Nothing amazing, but it does it's job well.

DLC

The Ultimate Edition of LoS comes with the two DLC chapters (Reverie and Resurrection). I won't spoil anything related to the story, but I'm glad they are here. The boss in Resurrection offers a nice challenge, and it's nice re-visiting an older area in Reverie again. The only real complaint I had with the DLC is the cut scenes. Due to budgets, the cut scenes are offered in a unique comic book style. It works most of the time, though when it tries to portray action, it's pretty hard to understand what's going on as the animation isn't super fluid.

Conclusion

This was a long review, but hopefully it helps you decide whether you want this game or not. At $30, I'd say it's worth it as I played for almost 30 hours and that was collecting all of the upgrades and completing the game on Normal. I did get it on sale though, so maybe wait for that.

Undertale is an amazing game, plain and simple. The gameplay is unique and fun, the graphics are charming, and the music is just amazing. The story is also one of the best stories I've ever had the experience to see.

It's free, bite-sized version of Broforce, with actors from the Expendables as the playable characters. Really fun to play some couch co-op with a buddy. Only lasts about an hour or two, depending on how good you are. Graphics are really nice, and this game can run on just about anything. Tight controls and fun gameplay make this a good one to kill some time (and evil soldiers)

This game might look bad, but believe me, it's pretty addicting. Ever played Lemmings? Well, think of that but with a chicken
