Two of the most engaging visual novels I've read, and one of my favorite series of all time. If you like mystery, pseudoscience and mind ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, the Zero Escape series is for you.
IMPORTANT play 999 in NOVEL mode, otherwise you will miss critical narration that may ruin the story.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a true investigation game. Figuring out what happened to the crew is a big part of the game, sure, and finding out those last few clues is obviously a driving force, but the bulk of the game is using the information at your disposal to identify every crewmate and their fate. The difficulty of that task ranges between laughably easy and insanely convoluted. You will need to use trial and error or make some guesses, and that could easily have been a chore. What makes it all work, however, is that the game confirms your answers for every three fates you have (presumably) solved. Not only is it a clear indicator of progression, but it also is an actual valid (and extremely useful) tool to help you. Solving a fate is not simply a matter of picking one of a few choices, but actually requires you to think and understand the solution. Admittedly that can be more frustrating (you will also get stuck), but it makes progressing through the game so much more satisfying. I’m a big fan of puzzle games. I’ve played my Professor Laytons and Ace Attorneys, but the game not doing anything to guide you makes the experience fundamentally different. Better? Debatable. But definitely fresh.

Graphics-wise, it’s probably a hit or miss. I’m personally a big fan of the vintage Macintosh look, and the game does offer slightly different color palettes, but I can definitely see how it might turn off some people. If you’ve looked at screenshots of the game, congrats! You know whether you like it or not. However, I have gotten dizzy when playing for too long, so thread carefully I guess!

The one gripe I have with the game is that once you’ve seen every fate, you most likely will have to do a lot of back and forth around the ship. Worse, some fates are only accessible through others. There are some shortcuts that eventually open, but I still find having to walk through the whole ship so much to be a drag. Some people do argue that it gives you time to reflect on what you know, but even if that’s the case, it still is a bit of a time sink.

Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Obra Dinn, and the game is too short for that to negatively affect the experience. If you like puzzle games and are looking for something innovative and engaging, I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try!
