Honestly pretty good, but it feels lacking in both content and polish.

None of the features Civ VI's DLC added are here, there's a fairly small roster of leaders, a somewhat small selection of maps, and simplified cities, eras and ages.

The UI leaves quite a bit to be desired too, heavily lacking tooltips for kinda unclear symbols, layouts and designs simplified to a fault, and no sign of the hover-over info boxes (e.g. the more detailed view of gold accumulation or science) that help speed up using Civ VI's UI even though it can be clunky.

Visuals are excellent, though - the animations are great, and the new combat animations feel instant and powerful. The new diplomacy UI is good too (it sadly seems to miss a lot of the cartoon-y charm of Civ VI's character animations, though that's just preference), and the new "fog of war" graphics feel like they fit the modern art style while really driving home the board game-alike look. It also noticeably runs better than Civ VI on my PC, too, which came as a surprise.

This is good now, but you should probably wait to buy it, because we all know:
A. They're working on it still, and it'll get better.
B. Later DLC will probably massively change the gameplay anyway and make it feel like a complete game. It kinda sucks that this seems to be Firaxis' approach, but that's just how they are, I guess.

If there was a Maybe option in reviews, this would get it. It's fun, but I can't really recommend it over Civ VI in its current state. If you never played VI, go for it I guess? I'll still play it and enjoy it. You'll probably enjoy it too. But there'll come a time when a feeling of "is that it?" kicks in.


but yea I still started playing and then had to stop when I realised it was 4:27 am, so 10/10 best game of the year
