If for some reason you've never played Skyrim, this is probably the version to buy. It looks better straight off the bat, contains all the DLC, is less likely to crash (always a plus), and has a simple in-built browser for finding and installing mods. The more you play, the more the desire to try a mod or two grows. It's much easier to do this using the in-game browser, but you're on your own: the more mods you install, the greater the chances that something might conflict with something else and the whole thing will crash, but that's the risk you take. You can still install mods externally using a mod manager if you prefer, which is probably recommended if you really want to dive down the rabbit hole. Most original version mods won't work unless they've been converted, and many now have, but a few great ones are missing (at the time of writing). Still, you can get the Special Edition modified the way you like it pretty quickly, and the options available will only grow. Recommended mods so far: SkuUI (v2.2 works), Unofficial Patch, Frostfall / Camping, Wet and Cold, Cutting Room Floor, Even Better Quest Objectives, Climates of Tamriel, Volumetric Fog, True Storms SE, Better Horses, Diverse Dragons, Enhanced Blood. I have others installed, but these have really made a big difference.

Anyway, regardless of all that, Skyrim remains one of the most remarkable and atmospheric open world RPGs available.

This game is 10 years old, and it seriously still holds up. You could release this today and it would still be better than most other ARPGs, which probably explains my unscheduled dropping of the other games I was playing to put 18 hours (so far) into this! In fact, as much as I love Grim Dawn (and acknowledge that it's a "better game"), I still prefer Titan Quest. Its ancient mythology setting immediate differentiates it from the demons, doom and gloom of most other ARPGs, and it's so refreshing to play through the bright sunlit Greek hills once more. It makes the contrast with the darkness and the musty caves that much more striking.

And has anyone ever done ragdolling better than this game? Smashing creatures in the face and watching them sail over buildings and disappear into canyons is still enormous fun, and later on it's like being Sauron in the prologue to Fellowship of the Ring. Lighting up the screen with spell pyrotechnics also looks fabulous with this edition. I love the combat in Titan Quest (once it gets going), which is probably a good job because it's a long game.

It's not perfect. Titan Quest always had a slow start, NPCs love to blather on about stuff in faux-Greek accents if you keep clicking on them (completionists be warned!), and it's a few hours in before you really start to feel like a warrior. Good job then that they've introduced a speed setting to whisk you past the opening and onto the good stuff. Once you upgrade your movement and attack speed, you'll probably want to turn it back to normal to keep up. There are other little touches, like a new "pick up all collectibles" button which saves a lot of clicking. Multiplayer also finally works again, and coop in Titan Quest is a hoot.

The biggest improvement for me, though, is that the playfield now scrolls smoothly and without any of the annoying blurry judder of the original. I installed TQ on half a dozen PCs and I could never get rid of it, so having it scroll around silkily at last is a massive difference and improves the feel of the whole game. Whatever they did (triple buffering?), it makes a beautiful game look modern again.

So yeah, thanks THQNORDIC for bringing us these improvements, and giving it to existing owners for free. Hopefully it will allow more people to discover this classic.

Dark Souls has a reputation for difficulty. Git gud, they say. But it's not that Dark Souls is necessarily difficult, more that it has a steep learning curve. It can be intimidating for newcomers, as it was for me when I first played it. I got as far as Gaping Dragon and hit what I thought was a brick wall. So I shelved it for nearly two years.

With the release of Dark Souls 3, I thought I needed to give the original another chance. Boy, am I glad that I did. This time I had encouragement, and some determination. Again I struggled at the beginning, "f*ck this game!" being uttered on more than one occasion. But then it suddenly clicked. I don't know what it was, perhaps I genuinely started to get better at the game, perhaps I upgraded my first weapon, but I know that by the time I encountered Gaping Dragon again, I knew - this time - that I would succeed. First attempt. Fist pump! That feeling when you beat something you'd considered a massive difficulty spike, there's nothing quite like it, and Dark Souls serves them up on a regular basis. It gives you such a sense of achievement, it's like a drug.

But it's not all about combat. Dark Souls rewards exploration. Not just with trinkets, but with real, tangible benefits. Those "holy crap, I can't believe I just found this awesome thing!" kind of benefits. It's a remarkable game, the level design is inspired (ok, there are a couple of exceptions late in the game which seemed a little "tacked on"), the enemy and particularly boss design is excellent, and it grabbed me so hard I could think of little else for the few weeks I was playing it.

Absolutely grab dsfix, which improves the textures dramatically and improves the feel of the game unquestionably at 60 fps. It's easy to implement. And don't be afraid to ask people for help, it's almost a requirement, that sense of community encouragement in overcoming the challenges you face. Even now (May 2016) there's still plenty of multiplayer activity, people willing to help, messages to guide you, and the occasional invader to challenge you. It just feels right.

Gush, gush, gush, yes I know, but I don't care because Dark Souls really is that good... once it grabs you.

What? Oh. Yeah, ok. I should, shouldn't I? Ok, just because it's you, Dark Souls...

Praise the Sun! \[T]/

Geriatric alien cockroach walking simulator.

Expect to be transported to a shadowy alien world for about 25 minutes, a place dominated by mechanical radio communication attennae. The sound design helps to sell it, but mechanically there's nothing interesting going on; a couple of mild puzzles and some button prompts. The store description is apt: a short experience, an atmospheric expression. Recommended because it's free and has effective sound design, but the expression they're going for is let down by its dour and workmanlike implementation.

Devil Daggers is an incredible, punishing experience, seemingly insurmountable when you first begin to play it. If you're not careful, frustration can set in, and perhaps a sense that you're just not good enough. But this game... this game! It teaches you its mastery without saying a word, all it asks is that you try, try and try again. Before you know it, you start to learn, to pick up patterns, try new strategies. It doesn't always work. In fact, it usually doesn't work. Games can be over in seconds, but hit "R" and you're immediately reset for another fateful attempt. Come back the next day and suddenly realise that your brain has subtly rewired itself and you're just a little bit better at it. Can't get past 60 seconds? Keep at it, before long you'll be disappointed in yourself if you don't get to 60 seconds each time.

This game is beautiful in the way it rewards you, the first time you kill a skull spider you'll want to punch the air, the first time you level up your weapon you'll feel a sense of euphoria. It's like a drug, and highly addictive, and surprisingly despite the fact each game is over in seconds, or perhaps minutes as you get better, you'll find that half an hour has past before you know it.

Devil Daggers is Robotron by way of Quake, HR Geiger's fever dream with audio by Lustmord. It's Doom on speed. If you have any love for the purity of fast-paced arena action, whether arcade or FPS, you should give this a shot. And when you die, and you will, just try again. And again. And again.

This is what happens when the original devs update a classic game; a game that looks, feels and sounds like Descent would if it were released in 2016. They have nailed the atmosphere of the original, the smart AI of the bots that dodge your missiles, gang up on you, chase you down and run away to find reinforcements, the punchy feel of the combat as your weapons rip through the air and robots explode into spinning fragments, and the panic of trying to find the exit when you destroy the reactor.

This is a teaser, a pre-alpha to show what they have in mind if their Kickstarter funds successfully. As with any pre-alpha, don't expect it to necessarily work perfectly with every setup, but it still feels like a complete slice of Descent, a thrilling reminder of what this genre can be when it's done well. On the strength of this, they deserve to succeed. Try it out and see for yourself. The endless challenge mode is worth the price of admission alone. Or it would be, if it wasn't completely free.

Another excellent puzzle game by Matthew Brown, and for 3 bucks it's a steal. It took me perhaps 7 hours to complete every puzzle perfectly (mostly playing offline, so Steam time is meaningless). Yes, it's a bit like Picross at first, but then a Hexcells-like concept is introduced: numbers within the grid tell you how many squares are in a connected group. This makes for some neat logic puzzles, particularly if you're aiming for a perfect solution (each error loses you a star). It can be a bit frustrating on the longer puzzles to make a silly mistake near the end and have to start over (assuming you want a perfect score, as if we wouldn't). I think Hexcells is probably the better game, but this is still absolutely worth your time if you like contemplative logic puzzles with a relaxing soundtrack. Pity there's no infinite mode.

Some games just click, and this was one of them. It's an ARPG that reminds me superficially of Divine Divinity. I must admit it didn't immediately grab me, the first ten minutes are not exactly awe-inspiring, and the difficulty of getting to grips with the combat and the Dreamworld make it easy to bounce off it. But I tried again the next day and I was hooked.

The Dreamworld mechanic is interesting, slip freely between one reality and the next, but I felt more could have been done with the concept (I think the sequel to this game addresses that), but it still made for an interesting take on combat. I played a mage, which I reckon is more interesting than a pure melee character; melee combat isn't particularly satisfying, but throwing around fireballs and ice storms? Yes please! Having to unlock different attunements that provide a number of useful "spells" (and having to decide which ones to use out of your limited slots) is the most interesting aspect of the combat system, and towards the end of the game you become satisfyingly very powerful. There are certainly flaws to the game, pathfinding can be annoying at times, combat (as a fluffy mage) can turn into a chase around the nearest rock, and you can tell it's a product of its time.

What kept me going was the exploration (the different locations have that addictive "what's around the next corner / what loot is in that chest?" allure), the storyline (delivered with aplomb by Tom Baker, who could make the phone book interesting frankly) and the enjoyable combat. Overall one of those games that turns out to be a pleasant surprise. I think it took me about 25 hours to finish (I mostly played offline, so the Steam time is inaccurate).

This is quite an atmospheric point and click sci-fi adventure game with some nice art; explore, find interactive elements in the scene, and use / combine items that you find to solve various problems. It reminds me of those hidden object games, but without those cluttered "a bomb just went off in this cupboard and I need to find my hairbrush" scenarios. It works because it's logical; there aren't any cat mustache puzzles here, although the downside is that it's not too taxing except perhaps towards the end. It's also quite short; a couple of hours and you'll have beaten it. The music is good, the voice acting is... well, not good. In fact the protagonist sounds like a real ♥♥♥♥, especially to his poor captain. The captain sounds like one of the devs, but at least he seems suitably weary of his arrogant co-pilot. The game is bookended by some decent cutscenes, and I think it's worthwhile if you like this kind of thing, although you might need a sale to justify the short running time.

There's a fascinating documentary here, the problem being that it's unlocked by playing a beautiful yet mediocre and extremely frustrating platform game. Said game starts off promisingly; it looks great, it's full of atmosphere, it has a cute fox companion, and the character swapping seems like a promising mechanic. Alas, before long you're close to throwing the controller at the wall because of the clumsy and imprecise controls, annoying camera and very frequent glitches that require you to restart at the previous checkpoint. Again, and again. Shame, because I really wanted to learn more about the Iñupiat, but I just couldn't wrestle any further with the sadly flawed game they wrapped it up in. Having said that, I get the impression this was designed primarily as a co-op game, and perhaps it works better if you have two players, but the AI that conrols the second character when you're playing single player seems determined to make life as difficult as possible for you.
