The Plan is over in literally 6 minutes, unless you spend a worrying amount of time admiring the fly on the menu screen. No, no, not the monitor screen, the menu. To say any more would rather ruin The Plan, so go and download it and play it. It's free, it's small, and it's quick.

If the tension is too much for you, then this is a video game about being a fly. Now you might think that being a fly is rather boring. I mean, all they do is sit around, clean their eyes in a disturbing manner, and occasionally buzz around as though they're drunk. Their other purpose in life is to sit on the windscreen directly in your line of vision while you're driving, regardless of how much space there is in the rest of the vehicle. Flies are mean. Sadly you don't get to do any of that in The Plan. You do, however, get to fly. Like a fly. The fly's flight model is rather basic. It flies, it goes up, left and right, and it buzzes convincingly if you run into something. Your fly is rather too well-controlled for my liking, not a single blunder into a nearby window to be seen. Still, it's functional. As you fly, as a fly, you'll find a few minor distractions to prevent you from flying upwards, but upwards you must go. It ends, very quickly, although it becomes strangely beautiful just before it does. Grieg has that effect. I've probably said way too much about it by now, but I did warn you in the first paragraph. Do I recommend it? Not if you hate flies, or have a bizarre aversion to experimental art, but everyone else should give it a shot.

Ok, I have become shamelessly addicted to these hidden object games. Having played three, I now consider myself an expert on them. Definitely. Anyway, this is a good one. Just don't judge it on the quality of its story and voice acting, both of which are subpar at best. It seems to be a genre convention actually, so I can go with the flow. No, these games depend more on the quality of their artwork, the level of interactivity in scenes, the quality of the puzzles (if any), and how well things sparkle and zing when you click on them. No really, when you find that hairbrush hidden carefully in the background of a scene, you want some fireworks when you click on it. It's satisfying, I admit it. I get the impression, reading around, that this developer is considered a good one when it comes to HOGs. I wouldn't know, but on the strength of this it's well-deserved. The game's quite long; it took me a little over 6 hours to complete the game (including the two bonus chapters as this is the CE) which is about twice as long as some HOG games. Like most of these games, the difficulty level was towards the easier end of the spectrum, but frankly that works just fine inbetween bouts of Spelunky and Jets 'n' Guns. It's relaxing, and strangely compelling. Interestingly, each hidden object scene also offers a mahjong game. You can either do one or the other, and the more of the HOG you complete, the easier the mahjong game becomes (and vice versa). It's a good way of trying a different approach if you're stuck trying to find a particular object. That didn't happen very often with me, but I appreciated the option. There's no time limit on completing each scene, but if you do them quickly you can gather a few Steam achievements. The achievements were a little bugged though, not all of them registered, if that kind of thing is important to you. Puzzles? Yes, plenty of those, most of them very easy, but they're a nice change of pace. The game surrounding the hidden object scenes plays out like a point and click adventure, with an inventory and objects that must be found and used in the appropriate places, so there's plenty of variety to keep you going. There's even a map!

So overall then, the best HOG-like I've ever played (out of the three I've played over the last month). GOTY in the HOG category so far, in fact! But seriously, if you like this kind of thing you can't really go wrong. The artwork is excellent, the music and presentation are great, the storyline and acting are like fingernails on a blackboard, you'll love it.

I'd forgotten how good this game is; I played it for hours back when it was first released. If you like side-scrolling shoot em ups, or just crazy shooting mayhem in general, you really can't go wrong with it. Fair warning, it's damn hard! Play on easy if you can't take the challenge, but normal is just enormous fun. When you die, you're back in the action within a couple of seconds, and you'll thank the devs for that because you'll die a lot. The gameplay is complete madness, everything is trying to kill you, and when you shoot down anything or blow up any ground installation, the guys manning it stream out or fall to their deaths, and you can smear them across your windscreen or riddle them with plasma as you wish. Sounds gory, and it is, but it's pretty mild cartoon violence unless red pixels horrify you. Before long (ie. 5 seconds onto the start of the level) there are bullets, bodies and pixel blood spots flying everywhere, explosions and crashing planes triggering more explosions, all set to a rockin' heavy metal / chip soundtrack that still sounds great. If that doesn't appeal to you, you should probably seek therapy! Gameplay wise, each level begins with a shop where you can buy, sell or upgrade your weapons and a selection of fun components that do everything from highlight wanted bounty hunters to earning you millions by streaming your exploits to a TV show (!). More mundane components do things like improve your hull or heat dissipation. The varied selection of weapons, bombs and ships is essential to understand if you want to progress in the game, particularly on the harder difficulties, because specific ship / weapon setups are much better than others at handling certain levels, the fun lies in trying different combos. Can't get past that bit on level 2? Go back to the shop and try another combination. I suppose the only downside is due to the age of the game it doesn't support multiple resolutions, although you can play it windowed at native res or full screen at whatever resolution you're using. Frankly it looks fine, the art holds up well, and once the chaos begins you'll hardly notice.

So yeah, it's just about the most fun you can have while scrolling to the right. Highly recommended if you're remotely into this genre.

Drawn is full of beautiful artwork, which is a good job because that's the premise of the game: enter magical paintings to gather clues and find ways of advancing up the tower to rescue Iris. It's a mixture of hidden object finding, using the right objects from your inventory in the right places, and solving a number of moderately taxing puzzles. Well ok, the puzzles aren't that hard to complete, but a number of achievements rely on solving them quickly, or within a certain number of moves, or without making any mistakes. That's actually quite difficult for some of the puzzles on your first attempt where you're trying to figure out what to do, but a second playthrough would snag those. Still, it's not the kind of game to play through more than once, it's a linear story, it's not particularly difficult, and it's over in a little over four hours. As for the ending... what just happened? It was all very rushed, a bit confusing, and left all kinds of questions hanging! I guess it was meant to be a cliffhanger for the sequel, but it felt a bit anticlimactic. Thanks for that. Still, great little puzzle game, pretty easy, looks great, nice music, I liked it. Speaking of the sequel, it doesn't appear to be on Steam yet.

This is the sequel to Samanth Swift and the Hidden Roses of Athena, and it follows exactly the same formula: you visit different countries searching for separate components to a myserious object that will save the day. Each place you visit involves a number of hidden object scenes, finding things that are lying around, and using tools in mostly obvious (and sometimes extremely unlikely) places. Occasionally there's a mild puzzle to solve, such as solitaire, match 3, jigsaw puzzles etc. It's all very easy, the cartoony style makes the objects stand out quite clearly, although in each scene there's usually one or two objects that are hidden a little better than the others. However, the game really falls over itself to give you hints, clues and not-so-gentle nudges, so you're unlikely to get stuck for more than half a minute. Hover a tool anywhere in the general vicinity of where you have to click, and a shower of sparkles erupts from your cursor. No doubt there, then! There are an abudance of hints that basically show you exactly what to do, by the end of the game we'd amassed nearly 40 of them and didn't use one. I mean, it's all good, clean fun and best enjoyed as a group, but it was easier than the first game. It really needs a "hard mode" where you can turn all that stuff off. Still, a good time was had by all, and I'd recommend it if you like this kind of thing. Just don't expect much of a challenge.

I backed this game on Kickstarter, and I would have got my money's worth following its development even if the finished product wasn't particularly good. Fortunately that hasn't happened, and Act 1 of Broken Age is the most fun I've had playing a game designed by Tim Shafer since the last one I played! It's a beautiful game in every respect, the art and animation is wonderful, the music is of the highest standard, and the voice acting is excellent without exception. Really, as a demonstration of what a modern adventure game can be, there's no finer example. It's mildly amusing throughout, with a couple of laugh out loud moments. The puzzles aren't particularly challenging, although I did get modestly stumped a couple of times, having to come back the next day before the solution presented itself. Frankly, that's about my speed, but I still hope Act 2 is a little more challenging. Even if it isn't I would have had a great time. Overall a great success then, as far as I'm concerned. Like any good two-parter, the story ended on a suitable cliffhanger with some burning questions remaining unanswered, hopefully Double Fine don't take too long completing it.

This is one of those games where you sit around the TV with your family and play through a few scenes each night. It's basically a mixture of "find the listed objects scattered in the scene" with some mild puzzle games, with a straightforward plot heavily inspired by a certain movie about a whip-toting archaeologist. The art is cartoony, which made finding most of the objects in the scene a pretty simple exercise as they stick out like a sore thumb. A few are better hidden, but nothing stumped us for more than a minute or two. The fact that the cursor sparkles when you hover over interactive areas of the scene where tools need to be used made searching somewhat redundant, and there didn't seem to be any means of turning that off. Still, it's all pleasant enough, and a fine diversion if you like this kind of thing. You'll know if you do.

It's pretty clear within a few minutes of playing that there isn't much to do in Proteus, and yet I keep returning to it. Essentially you wander around a procedurally generated island, one that's full of life, colour and sound. It's a captivating sight, and you float around in a detached manner drinking it all in. You'll slowly discover that each creature, each plant has its own unique behaviour and sound, and it's quite rewarding finding some of the rarer critters and watching how their behavior changes from day to night. Eventually you'll discover that the island can change in other ways, and this is perhaps the only time that the game takes on board any kind of objective. It's enough to keep bringing you back to the strange world of Proteus, even though you might not be quite sure how and why you got there. A lot of people seem overly concerned with whether Proteus is a game. To be honest, if that kind of thing is likely to matter to you, then give this a miss. Otherwise, I'd recommend experiencing this strange place, maybe you'll find yourself sitting contentedly on an imaginary beach watching an alien sunset.

A remarkable experience, one that I really thought achieved that much sought-after balance between compelling gameplay and compelling story, and like many great stories it's all about the journey. You control two brothers on a quest to find a cure for their ailing father, each brother controlled simultaneously with the left and right analog sticks on your controller (if ever there was an ad for getting a 360 / PS4 controller for your PC, this is it). It doesn't take long for your brain to adjust to this, although I found I had to keep the brothers on the same side as their analog stick to keep up! This isn't just a gimmick either, it really works, even to the extent of serving the story. There were times that I felt this was the best Tomb Raider game I'd played since the first one, that sense of edging around precarious drops and leaping between hand-holds, and the game exploits the co-op nature of your two characters well. It's also really spectacularly beautiful in places, and I kept wishing my Steam screen save button was working, but alas no. The game clocks in at just over three hours, but it feels right, almost like experiencing a great movie. The less said in any review about the actual story, though, the better. Just play it.

Steamworld Dig is a bit like a cross between Motherlode, Spelunky and a metroidvania. Motherlode because the game owes a lot to the concept of digging down into the earth, mining minerals and then selling them on the surface for gold to buy upgrades, which then enable you to dig deeper, take on more enemies etc. Spelunky because the main levels are procedurally generated, and the general feel of your character is quite similar to Spelunky (so much so that playing one after the other causes quite a bit of confusing pressing the wrong buttons!). Metroidvania because there are various caves that are set puzzles scattered throughout the main mine shafts, and completing them gives you upgrades that allow access to previously inaccessible areas. It's a compelling formula polished to a fine sheen here. There's a lot more depth (ho ho) to this game than first appears. I definitely dug it. In fact I'd say it's oresome. Ok, ok, I'll stop.
