Really cool game, feels great, mechanics are satisfying.

What sucks is having "Communication Error" every match and being d/c'd.
Til it's fixed, can't recommend for Multiplayer aspects, otherwise SP is great.

Early Access Review
Once you run into your first pre-made who send healing arrows cross-map and instantly revive those scavengers you put down after a lengthy chase just to have full HP all over again, you'll understand. Once it gets balanced, sure. Til then? Nah.

I wanted to like the game, I really did. I waited for it, purchased it, and was plagued like many others by the launch catastrophe, including 100% of my games having the Black Screen of Death. Today, I was estatic when I saw they patched my problem, and I could actually play, but oh how I led myself astray. I gather Jason is supposed to be overpowered, I mean he is a supernatural force, and I was with many others who said it was fine, because he should be overpowered.

However.

What he should not be, is broken. If you give a character the ability to teleport, and blink, which is fine since most of the incarnations cannot run, you have to make it fair. Spamming the sense ability, teleporting to the survivors, and blink+grabbing is not a good mechanic. There is a "Break Free!" type moment by spamming E, but regardless of where you are, Jason can just as soon break your neck as soon as he lays fingers to it, meaning there is absolutely no point to struggling. The only way I could gather out of it, would be your "shiv" as I call it, or the get-out-of-jasons-hands free card.

So then I thought to myself, surely with as many people complaining about this, they could be considering changing this, so I went onto the discord, and asked my question myself --

Can I get a word from some upper management that Jasons teleport grab is how its gonna be for the forseeable future, and is working as intended? If I had a clue where or not the mechanic was being discussed on being changed, I would keep it. However, as much as I want to like it, and with fairness to everyone else and I'm glad their enjoying it, I'd rather have my money if thats just how its going to be for long term.

@kombin3 We have no plans to change the design at this time.

So, unfortunately, I will be refunding this (hopefully) as I would love playing it, even if Jason is OP! However, their is a definite difference between being overpowered, and being broken. The immersion is perfect, the audio tones of when hes nearby sets the mood wonderfully, however not when he can have you any moment he wishes. At the end of the day, this is a game, and games are supposed to be winnable, however the chances of winning are slim at this point in development. Again, which would be fine, if not outright broken.

Graphically, the game looks good, but nothing spectacular, and given that the game is coming from an indie-studio, it could be considered impressive by some. Overall, I would give the game a 3/10 for having their heart in the right spot, but poor game mechanic design. I couldn't help but feel a small global cooldown of 2-3 seconds after a teleport on the grab would solve many of the complaints about it, but as it was said earlier, it is not planned to be changed.

I would keep an eye on it, and pick it up for no more than $10 on sale, and know what your getting yourself into beforehand.

I'll start by saying normally I don't write reviews. However after seeing all the negative bashing its receiving, I'll take my chances at being flamed and I'll go ahead and throw in my opinion.

Bottom line is, is this game worth $60? Depends on what you expect. Like L4D, the game is repetitive after awhile, however the replayability comes with the different scenarios and situations you can get yourself involved into. The base line is you as a hunter, will chase the monster, some games you'll catch him early, some games you won't. The scenario changes if you enroute get eaten by a man-eating-plant, and suddenly your team is one man short, or two if they send someone to retrieve you, so you don't get so far behind the monster losing most of your time. Or if you aggro one of the wonderfully aggressive, and frequent animals that are around the maps. Choices in characters come into play depending on one of four classes, each that have 3 choices within each class itself, assault, trapper, support, or medic.

As the monster, you will be running during the beginning of the game, if you don't like that concept, don't buy the game. You're goal here is to evade, and eat the local wildlife as to gain armor, and evolve until hopefully stage 2 or 3, when you can actually, 1) take a hit, 2) deal some good damage to the hunters that are no doubt on your rear. Also amusing, is letting them catch up to you right by a super agressive powerful wildlife, taking their attention off of you for a few moments allowing you to catch your breath, or gain enough distance to evolve without worrying about being locked in animation taking damage. Does the game have enough content to be worth $60 by itself? I don't think so. Does it have enough replayability to be worth $60? To me? Entirely. I thoroughly enjoy the game, I haven't had any negative games thus far, however I am aware they are out there.

Regarding the DLC bashing, if you look, the DLC is all skins. Optional Skins. They've stated that future maps will be free of charge, thus far the only thing costing money are skins, so all the bashing about day 1 DLC, I wouldn't even classify as DLC since while it may be content, its not adding anything meaningful to the game. It doesn't alter the game play in any way, doesn't give an advantage, it's there if you want to look different. I'm perfectly content playing on my base version of the game without it, and getting my moneys worth.

I'm really surprised at the negative bashing its received over this type of DLC, since I've seen games released on Day 1 with DLC that alters the game in huge ways, such as weapons or powerups. Regardless, I'm thoroughly happy with my purchase, even at $60. If you want to wait til it price drops, I couldn't blame you, but I'm all about wanting to get into it now so I don't mind paying a little bit more to save myself months of time waiting for it. Hopefully this will enlighten someone whos thinking about purchasing it, but is just seeing all the hate.

Have fun, and good luck!

Great blend of RTS, and FPS elements with the Frontiersmen (Marines) having a survival horror-eqsue style of gameplay while the Khaara (Aliens) have a great element of ambush and remaining hidden for the surprise kill.
