In the past Age of Wonders was something of a spiritual successor to HoMM, but since the second iteration it is a class of its own. Third AoW builds upon that basis further and provides a highly detailed and nuanced structure in a lovely fantasy setting. The strongest element of the game is that it is endlessly customizable and the player is not forced to follow typical fantasy race tropes. If someone loves turn-based strategies with RPG elements, they must know and love these series.
