This is one of those games where if Steam had an option to choose a "Mixed" rating, then I would be rating the game as mixed.

I compare it to Left 4 Dead often when I describe it to people who are interested in the game. The two games are similar in some aspects:
- Both are horde shooters, where you progress through a level and have one or two midway events before a final event. In Darktide's case, that's your typical mission, while in Left 4 Dead, you experience this over a campaign.
- Both have incredibly solid gameplay loops. It's very easy to sink hundreds of hours into both games. Darktide plays faster than Left 4 Dead does, while Left 4 Dead is easier to get into if you haven't played horde shooters before.
- Both have very satisfying gunplay. On the melee side, Darktide has the better melee system, but Left 4 Dead's melee system is perfect for the pace of that game.
- Both have a cast of memorable characters. Left 4 Dead obviously excels here, but Darktide's characters each have their distinct personalities which is supported by the ability to customize your character.
- Both have a community of both casual and more competitive players - which also means they have communities of idiots. Try playing a match of versus and/or a match of quickplay auric and you'll see what I mean.

So, why does Left 4 Dead still get played by tens of thousands of people to this day while Darktide struggles to maintain a playerbase in the thousands? There's a multitude of reasons.
- The crafting system as it exists now is absolutely terrible and only rewards those who put in an exorbitant amount of time into the game - you may get your perfect weapon after a few hours if you're lucky, or you'll still be trying to get it after 100 hours. No longer the case after the Itemization update.
- The quality of missions really varies on the map you're playing. This may be subjective, but I don't find a lot of Darktide's maps memorable or interesting compared to Left 4 Dead's.
- Some weapons remain way too strong in the current day, like the plasma gun and the knife, while things like the shotguns are in drastic need of buffs. Not everything needs to be good, but it at least needs to be usable. Even the worst weapons in Left 4 Dead are usable on expert difficulty.
- Darktide struggles with sound issues, both in terms of bugs and in terms of poor sound design. For the longest time, trappers were the epitome of this, but the game today still struggles with things like poxbursters not making sounds when they should.
- Despite the rework, penances still aren't in a good spot - some of them are ridiculously grindy for the reward you get out of doing them, namely the mission related penances.
- Crossplay exists and cannot be opted out of. Enjoy playing with Xbots.
- Performance can be an issue. You need a fairly good setup to keep the game at least at 60 FPS on low settings, and even then you may still have frame drops.
- Above all else, Fatshark has repeatedly dropped the ball on development. From unkept promises related to the launch to introducing new weapons without fixing issues the game has, it's clear that something at Fatshark isn't working.

It's still a fun game overall, but temper your expectations that any of the game's issues will ever be fixed.

Two hours in and it's already the same things that made the base game garbage. Did you enjoy the massively overbuffed enemies you fought in Farum Azula? No? Too bad! How about the seemingly endless combos that enemies and bosses had? We got that too! And do you want an open world that, despite how visually pleasing it is, will feel like a chore to explore? That's here too!

I really don't know what I was expecting. That this DLC is currently sitting at Overwhelmingly Positive is a testament to the fact that the average gamer has absolutely no standards and will unquestionably eat up whatever sewage From spits out. Once I finish this DLC, I will likely never touch Elden Ring again.

Frequent network issues make matchmaking tedious. UI is really bad. Settings that you would expect in a game like this, such as opting into proximity chat or voice chat, aren't there, which is baffling. Deathmatch is a battle of who can camp the spawnpoint the best. TDM is the only fun gamemode, but good luck getting into a match. With updates this could be fun, but don't buy it right now.

Better than Scholar of the First Sin as the enemy placement is a lot better and there aren't 60 million worthless NPC invaders coming after you. Play both for the experience, but you'll probably enjoy this version more.

BTW, the definitive order for the Souls games, from best to worst, is 1 > 2 (non-SOTFS) > 2 (SOTFS) > 3. If you disagree, you are either retarded or your first game was DS3 and you can't handle the more methodical movements of DS1 and DS2.

It's a really fun game once you get used to the combat and Inner Isshin may be my favorite fight in any From game. That said, it is way overrated; the game is not this perfect masterpiece that people give it praise for, no matter what your favorite youtuber says. DS1:PTDE will forever be my favorite From game.

On its own, the game is fine, but this is yet another instance of a game ruined by the people playing it. Wanna know how to make people avoid your game? Just spam the same three unfunny "memes" and phrases on every popular website and platform! With this one simple trick, you'll convince outsiders that anyone playing this game is an obnoxious dweeb who can't think for himself and only knows how to repeat the same corny "joke" posted to r/helldivers2 weeks ago! Surely this will increase the player counts!

Either play with a small group of friends, or don't play at all. Public matches are not worth it. If you choose to play, keep in mind you still need to download the garbage anticheat that comes with the game.

Update for Early Access Update 5: This update fixed a lot of the issues I had with the game, and I would confidently recommend it to people now. The addition of difficulty modifiers was a nice touch, and previously bad perks have been made much better. My original review will remain below.

---------------------------------------------------------------

There's definitely potential with this game. A lot of people seem to compare it to Risk of Rain 2, but I think that game and this game are distinct enough where that comparison isn't accurate (for example, RoR2's survivors offer more varied gameplay than different weapon choices for your crab, and RoR2 has a stronger emphasis on proc-chains to get huge damage). Rather than list off the things this game does well, I'll list the things I think need improvement:

- Nightmare mode isn't engaging to play. I get that it's supposed to be hard, but the difficulty comes from enemies becoming bullet sponges that take minutes to whittle down mixed in with ludicrous amounts of projectile spam. This isn't fun to play against. I believe this has been addressed as an issue in other reviews, but it's worth restating.

- Because a number of the perks currently in game just aren't strong enough to keep up with enemies, either because the perks aren't good to begin with or are too situational for you to make use out of, 99% of your runs will be crit based. This makes runs feel repetitive because it's always a rush to secure a strong crit chance during the first few islands.

- Enemy spawns are too aggressive. I had a number of runs end because of something spawning 3 feet behind me out of my vision, giving me no time to attack or dodge an attack.

- While the concept of choosing an island for a specific perk type (crit, damage, luck, etc.) is a great idea, this can often lead to certain perks being completely overshadowed if luck isn't on your side. Sometimes this isn't an issue, but if you keep getting luck and health perks without damage or crit, you will lose your run.

- Some weapons, such as the burst pistol, are too weak during the first loop, which makes using them a chore. Weapons also suffer from the lack of variety mentioned above, because they all make use of the exact same perks to make them stronger, albeit with small differences (for example, bouncing shots is great on every weapon except for the rocket launcher).

Overall, the game is still enjoyable, especially with friends, but it is far from finished. Thankfully, the game is in early access, so issues like these will likely be fixed over time.
