This does a few key things *exactly* right, which is why I prefer this package over emulation in many respects:
✅ Fast Forward and Rewind assigned to triggers
✅ Quick Save and Quickload assigned to right stick down and up
✅ Multiple Save States

Old games are hard, and these are a crucial modern quality of life layer for me. I'm playing through games I never owned and many I never played. I wish all retro gaming experiences started with this triumvirate of features.

I love this game. Other games I love are ProDeus and Ziggurat, if that helps you triangulate what to expect. Fast old-school movement, streamlined features, plus a great "charge up & ult" type mechanic for every weapon.

The level design is really impressive -- FPS platforming is hard to do right, but they nailed it in AMID EVIL. Maybe once or twice so far I've felt a little lost, but that's my ONLY criticism. Y'all, this game is SO GOOD.

Early Access Review
As the game stands at the time of writing, it's a long checklist of good game design decisions that I find really appealing:

✅ Incremental but meaningful progression
✅ Fantasy weapons inspired by Doom/Quake/Unreal
✅ Old school style fast FPS movement that feels really good
✅ Interesting room design that usually gives the player some kind of cover, but occasionally leaves them exposed
✅ Risk/reward loadout options that affect coin drop rate; also, coin drops are spendable within the run (on temporary weapons/improvements) or in menus (on permanent upgrades)
✅ Hordes of evil carrots

One thing I don't understand: Why are not all unlocked weapons available when launching a new run? Maybe this is an unexplained feature?

I think breaking crates / urns should have some material gameplay effect, like very occasionally dropping health, mana, coins.

Overall this is a ridiculously fun roguelike/roguelite, and everyone who said "it's like Ziggurat 1 but more and better" is spot-on.

Stop reading anything about Gone Home. Play it before it is spoiled for you!

If you are passionate about games as a valid artform, don't miss out on this thing. It's a major victory for storytelling in the medium.
