I was really torn between giving a thumbs up or down for Eternal Threads but I think in the end, there aren't many that I would recommend this game to for a few reasons.

The core story about saving 6 people from a house fire by manipulating smaller events is great and well thought through. All of the characters were compelling in their own ways and it was fun watching them interact. The time manipulation element has the same issue that most of these kinds of games have where jumping back and forth can feel tedious although I will say that this game avoids the butterfly effect issues that most games suffer from where your choices feel like they make arbitrary and random changes later on. Honestly, I give the devs props for this.

Ultimately though, each of the characters really just have one actual problem that needs solving to get their optimal ending and they each feel a bit two-dimensional by the end because of that. While it's fun to discover these traits early on, by the halfway point, it starts to be less and less interesting. Some of the characters also take significantly more work to "fix" than the others. Neil and Linda take a bit of work but Ben and Jenny, I just solved by accident. I would have liked it if there were a few more plot points to discover and the characters had a bit more going on. Plus, if some of the puzzles were a bit harder to piece together, that would be nice. I started off taking notes, thinking that would help, but everything was pretty surface level so that never really came into play, personally. Taking off the training wheels that was Control just telling you how to solve puzzles would be nice.

I still would recommend this game to fans of the genre though if it weren't for the framing story. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of series potential here and maybe years from now, this won't be as much of an issue. For now though, there's a ton of worldbuilding and setup that doesn't really go anywhere. I'll be vague here to avoid spoilers but be warned that there may be some minor spoilers in the next couple of sentences but just jump to the next paragraph if you want to avoid even that. With all of the dialogue that occurs between Control and the main character, the various events that occur throughout your time in the house like the light going out and a picture falling, the mystery about the former tenant and the occupants of the hidden safe, and the strong implication that one of the characters sees visions of the future and alternate timelines, the ending is frustratingly vague and never ties any of this together. Maybe some future entry in the series will explain it but until then, we're just left with no answers at all. For a plot thread that gets so much screen time and even has an achievement titled "Final Revelation", it's frustrating that it doesn't actually reveal anything and just adds additional questions that may or may not ever be answered.

If you are a huge fan of games like Steins Gate, 999, Forgotten City, Outer Wilds, Gone Home or anything like that, Eternal Threads is a fun way to spend ~10 hours. It also has a ton of potential going forward and I hope to see more later on. For now though, for the price and the issues, I'd have a hard time recommending it to anyone but the most diehard of genre enthusiasts begging for something new.

An extra 3 cases that are fun if you played through the base game and are looking for more. I will say that things didn't quite come together for me as well in this story as they did in the base game. Each case had quite a few red herrings that I thought would come to some payoff later but they don't seem to mean anything. I still recommend this DLC if you love solving the cases but if you played the original less for the cases and more for the storyline, you'd probably be okay passing up this DLC. It's really a matter of taste here.

No reason to not give the game a try if you're interested but I'm honestly left with more questions than answers about what this game is going to be. The whole experience lasts maybe 10-15 minutes and that's if you're spending time to look around and explore. They said there would be no combat but there is also no puzzle solving either. The whole demo is just walking around. In fact, the first trailer on the Steam store page gives a quick walkthrough of basically the entire prologue.

Ultimately, I'm left with more questions than answers here. Alone in the Dark is a series with a lot of ups and downs and it's hard to say precisely where they are going with this game based on what has been stated so far. The game is said to be a re-imagining of the first game but this feels more like Alone in the Dark 2, with Grace here being a character from that game and the Louisiana vibes being played up heavily, making me think its more Voodoo than Lovecraft. Hard to say for sure. Jeremy is here too though so perhaps it is a combination of the first two games into a new story? The second trailer shows many more characters as well so it doesn't seem to be a straight adaptation of any of the previous games.

The atmosphere here was less scary and more just confusing, with the main character Grace seeming entirely nonplussed by the various supernatural things occurring around her. The story also gave very little context for what was happening so I was too busy asking why Grace wasn't more concerned about the foyer of her house turning into a swamp before her eyes to actually be scared by any of it. Fingers crossed for the full game but this prologue didn't really help much.

Every bit as hard and frustrating as people have made it out to be but it is doable and it's incredibly satisfying to find yourself blazing through sections that used to be mouse-shatteringly difficult before. If unforgiving games aren't your thing, don't waste your time here. There's nothing in Getting Over It that is going to blow your mind or make the pain worth it. The pain itself and the satisfaction of overcoming is what makes the game worthwhile. If that's your jam, this game is a blast.

Takes a similar approach to mystery solving as Return of the Obra Dinn. If you enjoyed that game, this is a great follow-up with some truly interesting mysteries to solve and an overarching story that ties things together. I would have liked to have seen the story incorporate our mystery solving into it in some way though, making us some small part of the story and giving our mystery solving some purpose beyond the act itself, similar to Obra Dinn or the Half Mermaid games.

A frankly huge amount of variety in this game. Each world is relatively short but there are 8 total worlds which all have unique level design, enemies, and strategies to beat them. If you enjoy boomer shooters at all, this is an easy game to recommend.

I enjoyed it. Like a modern day Defender with some added resource management features. It's simple but it's a good time.

An interesting and actually pretty bulky adventure game with great atmosphere and presentation. The English is fairly rough and there are some errors throughout (the game takes place in the state of Virginia but the newspapers have their price listed in pence and list 991 instead of 911 as the emergency number) but some of the details are quite cool as well. The storyline is simple but effective and the puzzles were fun to work out. Most were quite simple but I struggled at a few points. I will say that the game states that due to its length, it doesn't have a save feature. Personally, I felt this was a mistake. Sure, it isn't long but it does have a few cutscenes at the start and multiple endings to get through. Saving would have been nice. The House of E likely won't blow any minds but for a free game, it is worth checking out to see what the devs can do. Thanks!

At its core, The Room is a series of puzzle boxes. What sets it apart is the fantastic atmosphere and Lovecraftian themes. Be aware that while there is a storyline, it is quite minor and doesn't end in a satisfying way. It is mostly setup for the other games. The main draw here is the puzzle boxes themselves. It is also worth noting that while the PC edition has seen a graphical upgrade, this was a game originally made for touch screen devices so while the mouse certainly works, it does sometimes feel clunky compared to touch input.

Recommended for any gaming history buffs out there. This package is so far above and beyond, it basically redefines what a historical gaming collection can be. The vast majority of the games can be accessed from a list, just like you'd expect from any collection, but the primary mode actually has the game walk you through different aspects of Atari's history along a timeline of events. The timeline includes the games themselves but also documentary features, archival footage, marketing material, and fully realized 3D models. The level of detail is incredible.

This would all be more than enough on its own but the game also includes 6 brand new games which are mostly modernized, remix-style games imagining what a 2022 version of a classic title may look like. They even created Airworld, the unfinished finale of the Swordquest series, based on original design documents. Many of the original games that are included are also exceedingly rare or may never have been released in an accessible fashion on PCs or consoles before, such as many of the Atari Lynx and Jaguar titles.

Digital Eclipse is well known for their historical compilations but they have outdone themselves with Atari 50. This completely redefines what a game compilation can be and hopefully will set a new standard going forward. For anyone even remotely interested in gaming history, Atari 50 is the best we have ever gotten, bar none.
