Overall, it felt like the devs wanted to create a game grounded in Mesoamerican culture, which I’m all for, but the game just… wasn’t fun. The game loop consisted of “go to one place talk to these people, go to the next place, talk to these people or fight these bugs, go to the next place…” The core mechanics of equipment and abilities didn’t really feel like they had any rhyme or reason, and artificially limited you from using too much of them, while also not making it apparent why you would choose one thing over the other.

The guilt/ ghost mechanic was just annoying, and basically was the devs not wanting you to enjoy a turn-based game.

All these different groups and cultures are showcased, but never really indulges what makes them different, where they came from, etc. Iyo, Tuag, Chali, Kanek, etc. They were all just names. If the expectation was for me to Google these outside of the game, then you’ve already lost me. The game felt like it could’ve been a way to inform people of the rich history of these cultures, but doesn’t provide that itself. And now that I’m google searching the names, I realize that… they aren’t real cultures? Yeah, you lost me. Actually, you lost me when certain groups started speaking in broken English. I guess to portray them speaking in a language not native to them? Idk just felt like a weird choice.

The art direction and music were solid. But after three and a half acts of gameplay, I’m cutting my losses.
