The Philippines ranks as the fifth poorest country in Southeast Asia based on GDP per capita, with a value of US$4,130 or around Rp61. 9 million. In 2023, the national poverty rate was 10.9 percent, equivalent to 2.99 million Filipino families who lacked sufficient income to meet their basic needs.
The Philippines still has a large gap in wealth equality and poverty varies widely across the country:
Poverty by region: Poverty is higher in rural areas (36%) than in urban areas (13%).
Poverty by ethnicity: Indigenous people, farmers, and fishers are among the poorest in the country.
Poverty by income: The average family of five needs at least PhP 13,797 per month to cover basic needs.
Poverty by food: 8.7% of the population is unable to buy basic food.
Wealth inequality: The Philippines has one of the highest Gini Coefficients in the East Asian and Pacific region.
