Good dakka, good weapon variety, good pacing. It would be treasonous not to play.

I don't normally like 'roguelikes', but this game has removed the piece that always frustrates me. You aren't starting over from scratch each run--the story is advanced, and certain skills do carry over, while other bonuses only last for the length of the run. It's a great balance.

The story is good, the combat is not. The cover mechanics are unreliable. This is compounded by the awkward doubled-up controls; the context switch that changes a button from doing one thing to doing the other thing is often surprising in the heat of combat. In addition, the game commits the near-unforgivable sin of not allowing quicksaves--checkpoints only.

There are several places where this gets immensely frustrating: you die because Walker is just standing next to cover while you mash space, the game smarmily asks you if you want to decrease difficulty, and then you get kicked back to the beginning of the multi-stage setpiece fight that you had been doing well in for the last couple minutes right up until you weren't. Also, getting through some sections just seems to be a matter of luck. Game would have been better as a conventional FPS.

If you want to play it, buy it on sale and play on easy for the story. Normal starts out plenty easy, but gets to the point where control snafus will make the game really annoying near the end. The game will insult you by asking if you want to turn the difficulty down, and then you'll be stuck on whatever difficulty you chose in order to show that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game who's boss.

Seriously though, I wouldn't give a crap about any of the rest if I wasn't stuck with the checkpoint saves. DO NOT DO THIS, DEVS.
