I've played this game since it was first bought to North America years ago. So I can testify to the following statement: You DO NOT need to spend a dime on this game. I don't and I'm just fine. There isnt anything in this game that you can't get from participating in events or given to you for free. In fact, they give you TWO free permanent heroes (which are kind of like classes in RPGs), which is rare for a publisher to do, just for starting out. Every time you rank/level up, you get free stuff. Sometimes it's small things like tokens specific to game modes, other times it's items to boost the stats of your characters or free heroes to try for 2 hours.
There's a huge list of heroes to play as, so I'm positive you'll find one that fits your playstyle/obsession. There's heroes for players who like to be beefy tanks, fast damagers, magicians, snipers, healers, cowboys, cyborgs, manga characters, other game characters, a tiger, etc. Furthermore, if that doesn't satisfy you, you can also add gear (which grant more powerful skills sometimes) onto your hero to give you that edge.
There isn't even a learning curve to this game. First thing you do when you first login is go through a basic tutorial to learn to fight. After that, you're free to play any game mode in the game. You'll quickly learn that to win you just have to beat up the other person and avoid their skills after you find out what they do. If you ever get stuck, look up videos on YouTube, you'll stumble across gameplay and tutorial videos to help you learn. You'll be fine.
The only problem you'll ever encounter ingame is people calling you a variant of a "noob" and sometimes connection issues with people you're fighting. However, all of that is manageable.

So yes, I recommend you at least try this game, you just might like it.

So to sum up here's what I like/dislike about this game:
+ Variety of heroes and gear to choose from
+ Free stuff frequently given to you
+ Customization options for each hero (eyes, skin, hair, hair color, and boxers)
+ Game modes

- Bi weekly game updates add gear, heroes, or more stuff to buy rather than balancing what's already in game.
- Unbalanced gears/heroes can/will be used against you in battle. Just fight harder.
- High Price of ingame freemium currency (called ZP)
