Review Based on Vanilla Version.

A "spiritual successor" Alpha Centuri but with all the experience of Civ 5... this is not. So as usual, my reviews tend to be sparse but to the point:

CONCEPT: Okay, I'll admit, this is a great game in it's concept, as I always loved the Civ mods that let you play in Sci-Fi/Fantasy worlds (ah, Test of Time, how I loved you). And the idea of humans settling new worlds and evolving down different paths, also cool. But other than that, not a huge amount of interesting things over Civ 5. You have a few balanced civilisations trying to take over the world by either killing everyone else, contacting an alien species or by the Affinity end (which are more or less three versions of the same thing). Roving alien insects replace barbarians, Affinity replaces religion and lasers replace bullets. What the game lacks is personality. I mean, I am evolving my nation towards it's own unique destiny, and yet, every other race looks the same. And they more or less play the same. What about offering us different choices on how to guide our nation (ie monarchy/democracy). What about a United Nations of New Earth?

USER INTERFACE: It's a little different from Civ 5 (mainly the research web) but that's pretty cool. The Civ 5 UI worked, so why fix it (only complaint is it lacks a clock showing my computers time, but a mod sorted that out). My actual biggest complaint with the UI is the icons they use in the research web. In Civ 5 we were using real wonders (so we knew the value of researching a tech that let us build the Pyramids). However, this is a fictional game world we have here, and all the building/wonder icons appear white, so you never know if that technology you're chasing is going to give you an edge later on. I also would have liked a screen where it shows the faces of the different nations, changing as they change (espeically my own), just so I feel like the human race really is changing.
* There is a mod available in the Steam Workshop to add a clock. Awesome feature.
* There is a mod available in the Steam Workshop to add colour (and meaning) to the Tech Web.

GRAPHICS: Well, while this usually doesn't matter, the game is just a reskin of Civ 5, and plays on the same engine. However, my gripe with the graphics comes down to customisation of my nation. The game has a feature where your units will upgrade to a point where even if you've been going down one affinity, you can mix and match with other affinities for different upgrades (the new unit will be called Evolved/True/Prime whatever). Yet it looks EXACTLY like it did before. If I've been breeding giant insects for my men to ride on, I expect the original graphic at first. Then when I choose to make it more insectoid (Harmony/Evolved) I expect it to be bigger, maybe with my human solders somewhat mutated now. If I choose to make it more human (Purity/True) I expect the creature to look more subdued, with some machine guns atop it's head. If I choose the cybernetic path (Supremacy/Prime) I expect my new unit to be a cyborg-insect hybrid that shoots lasers from it's mouth. Same goes for the cities. During the game I can modify my city buildings through quests, my cities/improvements should change to reflect this. I also think basic units (explorer/traders/colonists/workers) should change as my affinity changes.

SOUND: No fault found. Sound was pretty awesome, with an amazing soundtrack. Only real gripe was that I would have liked the "techology researched speech" done by the leaders of other Civs (as they typically are the "sources" of wisdom.

HOW TO IMPROVE THIS GAME:
1) More Nations Initial Start-Up Options: This should be a no-brainer, but the game feels extremely lacking in this department. I mean, this is less than even bare bones Civ 5.
2) Customised Units: Okay, we're on the right path, now let's follow my intructions in Graphics and give the world some real variety.
3) Customised cities: As I make quests to alter my nations, I would like it reflected on the screen, not just in the number crunching.
4) Diplomacy: This needs a re-working. Give us back the UN (or Sci-Fi equivalent).
5) More Affinities: Why does the idea of mutating ourselves into hybrid human/aliens mean we are truly harmonious? We might still be a an evil powerhouse? And why does becoming a cyborg depicted as giving up your humanity? Still, I would like to see some different affinities or better yet...
6) Alien Nations: I wouldn't mind some alien nations (not from this planet) to play as, with a different set of victory conditions.

Godus will be a great game - when it's released that is. Until that time, it plays like a truly beta game (and being Early Access I expect no different). Very much in the vein of both "Black and White" and "Populous", Godus is a god game about creating a civilisation. Digging in the dirt for cards is pretty cool, except when you realise that 22Cans blocks you from getting the ones you actually need. A lot of the game is yet to be implemented, and this is confusing to most as the game art shows a near completed game. It's also a very time consuming game, with HOURS spent earning belief (which then needs to be collected, like a Facebook game) before it can be added to your coffer. Why not just have the belief pool into my coffer over time?

Most concerning of all it has been MONTHS since an update, making me doubt the viability of this game.

Graphically? It's pretty appalling, even though it is meant to be voxel based, the resolution of the game screws you over.

Sound? Meh, it's alright.

* This review may change upon game completion.

Game Bought: 14 Feb 2014

A really clever idea, and a bit of a minecraft clone. Had a peaceful feel to it, all about scupting and building, and hey, that's cool. And the scope of the idea was huge, and I mean huge. But here's why, after a year of playing, I have had to change my review to a negative one.

* No updates. The developers never update this game, and I've watched it slide from a truly promising game to another game that'll end up in the depth of Development Hell.

* Not much in the way of creativity. Seriously, much of what people wanted was some more biomes besides Desert/Grassland/Forest. Add Ice, Lava, Tropics, Cityscape to the basic biomes (lets face it, it's mostly a retexture) and watch the interest for this game regrow. Add in some items to go with that and it would be GREAT.

* Larger worlds. At the moment it's only small worlds, but imagine if we had large worlds with floating islands full of Jinn cities around us?

* Jinn. These little critters had some great potential, but as it is, they're largely wasted.

* Social dynamics. This game was supposed to be about the social interaction with group shared world, and we saw a small amount of that, but due to budget cuts we saw the game die.

* Character avatars. These in general need some updating.

I have even discussed these ideas in the forums, and the funny part was I got a "Great ideas!' including from the devs, but to no avail.

Sadly, if I don't see an update soon, I will be having to ask a refund as it has been over a year since the game was reased as Early Access.

This is not the Neverwinter Nights (1+2) I grew up with. However, for those needing there D&D fix on a computer, it's pretty damn good. Story is even fairly palpable to the those who have played the game.

This game has all the hallmarks of bringing back what many fans of Dungeon Keeper miss (War for the Overworld is spiritual successor of Dungeon Keeper 3: War for the Overworld). However, this has been a long time in development, with not many patches nor updates to new systems. While I will happily play the finished product of this game, the current "Early Access" build still needs a lot of work from what I've seen.

That said, I give this game a thumbs up.
