Excellent game, worth buying for the mods if not for the base game itself. I would look at things that rebalance it (as well as the amazing total conversion mod Nehrim). Any problems that anyone has with the game can literally be fixed by modders and most likely are. I have spent dozens of hours in this game (had the boxed editions with mods on my old computer, but they got trashed along with it).

As far as storytelling goes, the story is quite compelling as compared to Skyrim. The guild quests in this game are fantastic, with the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild coming to mind as having some of the coolest moments in the game. It feels epic without taking away freedom from the player character and I can guarantee that you will be reloading saves or creating new characters to try out all kinds of different approaches.

Glitches do happen, as expected of a Bethesda game, but most of the time they do not take away from the experience. Otherwise a lot of them are fixed by player patches or have documented workarounds.

Graphics are great for the time it was released, though they can be optimised quite a bit by installing a few patches to improve framerate. There are also a ton of high resolution mods that make the game pretty enough that you can just walk around marvelling at the world around you. People have added entire worldspaces into the game and redesigned cities, as well as made them accessible from the outside instead of going through the doors.

The playstyle of the game is pretty decent, though combat does not feel as naunced as a title like Mount & Blade. But if you're looking at this, you're probably buying it on PC so go download some of the amazing combat mods out there.

Overall, if you're looking for a game that has aged remarkably well and has an amazing series of mods that ensure that you will probably never be done playing it, Oblivion is for you. Skyrim may have a much more updated engine but this old game still shines.
