"Subnautica meets Universal Paperclip"

Comparing Planet Crafter primarily to Subnautica, while the feel of the game is a little more janky and unpolished (it's far easier to get lost inside terrain you aren't meant to go behind, although thankfully there is an Unstuck button for that), the making-numbers-go-up premise is compulsive.

It alternates nicely with building a few constructs, then going exploring shipwrecks and caves while the numbers rise to meet the next unlock, of which there are dozens and dozens. I wasn't counting but I would estimate over 50. And while there are no vehicles to unlock, you'll eventually be able to zoom around pretty effortlessly, and later set up teleportation and automation drones to run resources over long distances.

As the terraforming progresses, you'll notice with satisfaction the world around you changing, as ice melts, water begins to accumulate on the ground, vegetation begins to spread, and the sky changes color. The landscape will reflect all this with bright and vibrant colors.

There is a story, though you'll likely find it less engaging. There's also three endings, and depending on what's in your possession at the end, you can simply save and reload to watch all three.

8/10

Now that I finally got my hands on this, after backing the kickstarter and then asking for a refund due to the Epic Games Exclusive crap that was announced after the fact, I can say it's actually a fun game. So at least there's that.

It's an interesting amalgamation of current "XCOM" games, whereupon there's plenty of exploration to do, tons of research to cover, and punchy combat that remains satisfying, as least when things go right, which is *mostly* up to you.

I am currently trying to balance favor with all the factions. Although I'm letting one get way out ahead, I'm making sure no one actually becomes hostile to me. I can see how it might be more interesting to truly single out one, and target the others for resources on future playthroughs. At the same time. I can also see that repeating the same 10-20 early game research items and clicking though the same lore "revelations" will become tedious. Only time will tell if I finish this more than once.

The new 3D graphics are quite good, but I was glad to find a button to restore the top-down view many of us were accustomed too. I ended up using it only a handful of times, maybe a dozen over the course of the whole campaign.

Somehow the story felt less epic than CW3, but still excellent. 9/10
