A classic for Linux users, with a nice soundtrack too. Happy to see it on Steam :]

Psychological Horror.

I bought this game in early access because I wanted a cozy Animal Crossing-style game for PC. I think I played for about an hour trying to like it, but it never did capture my attention. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and decided I would come back when the game released.

It's a rainy autumn day, and I was missing Animal Crossing after I sold my Switch. I was really excited to try out this game on the Steam Deck now that it's out of early access. So I did, and my feelings about the game are exactly the same. It wasn't terrible; it was mostly just boring. Everything feels shallow.

You show up at an inn with no backstory. The people there are friendly, but perhaps overly-friendly. They pressure you to move in. As a result of your move, you are suddenly tasked with town upkeep and building a ton of houses to attract other people to the town. As you do things, you get 'mayor rewards'. While I was playing, I couldn't help but think this sounded a little cultish, lol.

The NPCs are very bland. They have no real quirks to make them interesting or fun to interact with. The conversations have no sustenance. I liked Moss' personality, but that's about it.

The layout of your town feels cramped. This made things like positioning the bridge look and feel awkward. You cross your bridge and there's a whole open area with hardly anything in it. The beach was the same way.

The game ran well on Deck aside from the dropdown menus in settings, but that's all fine. The graphics looked very unpolished though. My character's face was more pixelated than the rest of the game, which bugged me a little. There were random sparkles that I found very distracting. None of this would have mattered that much if the game itself was good, but unfortunately it isn't. I really wanted to like Hokko Life, and I might come back to it in the future, but for now it just isn't worth my time.

Played this immediately upon receiving my Steam Deck. A handheld is something I had been hoping Valve would make for over a decade. Aperture Desk Job is set in one of my favorite game universes, which I have loved for over a decade. It feels more like a tech demo than a game, but it's still pretty solid for what it is. It's fun, lighthearted, and the gameplay is good on Deck. The characters are likable, and it feels good to have something new in the Portal universe, even if it's small in comparison to the other games.

Aperture Desk Job is getting a positive review because this whole thing (Steam Deck and this to compliment it) is a childhood dream come true for me. My 13-year-old self would be so excited if he knew the future. Valve fanboy moment.

Not an objective review in the slightest, but still, play this game.
