A stunning sequel to a fantastic game.

Zeno Clash 2 takes the land that you started learning about in Zeno Clash and stitches it all together to make it an open world. You can feel so much more connected to Zenozoik with the ability to freely travel around and explore. The battle system has been overhauled to make it much more interesting. The story is expanded massively, showing that Zeno Clash was just the tip of an iceberg. The new weapons are very unconventional, which makes them extremely interesting. I am so sick of assault rifles, but I digress. The characters feel unique and interesting. Characters from ZC1 come back in higher definition, with tons of new friends. Even the non-speaking denizens of Halstedom are still in place, keeping the feel of the first game. The music is incredible. It does an outstanding job of conveying the surrealism of the world you're exploring as an uncivilized, misplaced protagonist who is learning more about the world than any of his equals could begin to fathom. Massively recommended.

Shame that Rimat's lines were recorded in a bathroom though. Also I miss Deadra's old voice, and it was a little jarring to be without her for so much of the story, considering she was a central plot-mover in ZC1. It kinda felt like taking Alyx away from me if I was playing HL2.

A very deep game, but you have to give it time. I absolutely love this game. I've owned it for a long time, and I remember playing it once a while back. I picked up Zeno Clash 2 during the 2014 Steam Summer sale, so I figured I'd play through the original again. It really holds up well, considering its age (I may be biased with Source games though). The story is a nice taste in the wonderfully surreal land of Zenozoik. The full course arrives in the sequel.

You'll likely hear a complaint or two about the voice acting, but considering the indie development, it's pretty amazing. Plus, once you get immersed in the story, the strangeness of it becomes very appropriate. I would actually say I like the voice work in the original more than the sequel.

First of all I'm very sorry it took me this long to review this game. I have gotten many many highly enjoyable hours of entertainment from this game. It's such a major shame that the difficulty is so unforgiving off the start, but once you get past that first hump, there is a rich and deeply satisfying RTS/FPS hybrid experience waiting for you. Hell, if anyone is thinking about getting into the game, feel free to friend me and I'll help you get into the game. It really is a lot of fun.

I put many highly fun hours into this game a while back. I even edited the wiki, as NEET power nerds are known to do. I never really got into the DLC that much (and holy schmidt, there's a lot of DLC now), but I remember the co-op-able campaign being a very big highlight, as well as the accessibility of the multiplayer "melee" modes. The lack of dedicated harvesting/building units makes the fights very tactical and actiony. Hero units are a lot of fun to work with, as well. Overall it's a wonderful game with a lot of polish and plenty of content (and also loads and loads of DLC).
