Trench Warfare CAN be fun

Shogun 2 is as of writing the pinnacle of the Total War Series. It has the best graphics, best UI, best soundtrack and is the most polished of all the games in the series.
The game has the least diversity of the series but this is both a strength and a weakness. The enabled the game to have a very easy to graspe rock, paper, sissors style of gameplay. Of course the downside to this is fans of the series felt that the diversity of other games, such as Medieval and Rome was not on display. Though the time period and more mono-block culture of Japan works alongside the game mechanics.
Shogun 2 has a good deal amount of DLC, not all of it is needed to get a great experience however. Pick up the Fall of the Samurai standalone expansion if you can, it completely changes a lot of mechanics from the base game. Set against the backdrop of the Boshin War, the end of the Samurai period in Japan. Gunpowder, foreign influence and steam power comes into play. I have played two full campaigns of Shogun 2 and one full campaign of FotS. Everytime was different and this is by far the most challenging of the Total Wars.
Don't bother with Rome 2 just quite yet, Shogun is polished, full of content and absolutely beautiful, go grab it for 2 player co-op play or solo, it's a great blast.
