I have owned Sid Meier's Civilizations V since the game first came out -- I am grateful to say I reached 1000 playing hours in Civ V!!! This game is my go to game -- I love the strategy, immersion, depth, historic elements, and the quality of mods out on the workshop.

Albeit a great game, I would love to see in the next installment:

1. A slower speed than Marathon for greater immersion with each era
2. More diplomatic features that were present in Civ IV
3. Random events that were present in Civ IV however expanded to make things more random and engaging
4. Nerf City-State gold gifts; use something similar to City-State Diplomacy mod (with mod author's approval)
5. Continue with 1UPT; although there are a few people who do not want this, 1UPT makes units valuable on your military fronts versus most strategy games' focus on the zerg rush
6. Troop unit death equates to population loss
7. Weaker cities

Bottom line: this should be in any strategy gamers' library. It is a must have and will eat up alot of your time.

I had this game in my library for a long time; however, been preoccupied with other games. I decided to give this game my full attention and I just stumbled on something that will drag me away from Skyrim and Civ V. The game is great for my taste in strategy. Ironman mode is a mode I wished was in every game. In this mode, every action you make has consequences and you cannot just reload your previous save -- if your favorite soldier dies, they are dead. I played three missions so far thinking that this game is easy... two of my ranking soldiers died already... In other games I played, you really don't get connected with your followers/troops/soldiers. This game has the opposite effect on me, as I cannot reload to save them from their fates. As they died, my remaining two soldiers immediately panicked, shooting an alien dead. The way they panicked made me feel very remorseful and mindful of troop placement and fatal funnels.

I recommend this game to anyone looking to a challenge, with great immersion of being a top down, field commander using key tools, tactics, and techniques to ensure mission success. Your decisions shape your game: do you want to risk soldiers' safety and bolster technological gain? Or do you want to miss out on collecting vital samples to protect your troops? It's your call in Xcom: Enemy Unknown!

Update - 11/26/2017 - As to this date, I still have not beaten the Long War mod. If you have never heard of this mod, missed hearing the uproar over its brutality or skipped it out of cowardice, brave up fellow Commander. Vanilla XCom is superb however as focus is on XCom II (or hoping XCom III), Long War brings fresh life into the game. Head of to Nexus mods and get ready to rage quit again Commander! Good luck!
