Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) – A Redemption Arc in a Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars Battlefront II is a game defined as much by its rocky launch as by the impressive experience it eventually became. Developed by DICE, the game set out to deliver a definitive Star Wars multiplayer and single-player package—and after years of updates, it largely succeeded.

Visually, Battlefront II is outstanding. From the icy plains of Hoth to the vibrant streets of Naboo, the game looks and sounds like Star Wars brought to life. John Williams’ iconic score, authentic sound effects, and meticulous attention to detail make every battle feel cinematic, whether you’re wielding a lightsaber or piloting an X-wing.

Gameplay is strongest in its large-scale multiplayer modes like Galactic Assault and Supremacy, where infantry combat blends with hero characters and vehicles. Playing as iconic heroes such as Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, or Rey is thrilling, though their presence can sometimes feel overpowering in competitive matches. The class-based gunplay is solid and accessible, even if it lacks the depth of some dedicated shooters.

The single-player campaign offers a refreshing perspective by focusing on an Imperial protagonist, Iden Versio. While the story has interesting ideas and strong presentation, it’s relatively short and plays things a bit too safe narratively.

At launch, Battlefront II was heavily criticized for its loot box and progression systems, which felt grindy and pay-to-win. To EA and DICE’s credit, these systems were completely overhauled. Microtransactions tied to gameplay advantages were removed, progression was reworked, and the game received a steady stream of free content before support ended. In its final state, Battlefront II feels fair, content-rich, and enjoyable.

Verdict:
Star Wars Battlefront II is a great example of a game redeemed through post-launch support. While it will always carry the shadow of its controversial beginnings, today it stands as one of the most immersive Star Wars gaming experiences available—especially for fans who want to live out epic battles from all eras of the saga. ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
