Hear me out! I actually like this, and don't mind dishing out the equivalent of the price of a beer for it. First, I struggle to look at the new god icons, and have to play with the old voice-lines, otherwise it breaks immersion for me. If we want this game to have good support, purchases like this don't risk breaking the meta. For AoE II to get support, they have to constantly add new civilisations. If this game doesn't generate profits, it will get axed.

Great with friends. Good for casual play or for long runs. Pyramid DLC makes grinding to prep for dungeons easier,

So,

The first thing you feel when jumping into the game is how badass the setting in. Woof, finally a good cops and robbers game! The music is fun and add a lot to the action sequences within the missions and it sets an awesome ambiance. The mechanics seem to be split up into stealth and combat, both of which are playable and fun. The shooter mechanics are at the standard of most FPS titles nowadays. The stealth mechanics are straightforward and are fun. Their features include guards on patrol with field of vision, cameras with dead zones and small objectives. While neither of these aspects are revolutionary, some innovation on the developer’s part is to meld them together nicely into missions where a mishap can turn a stealth mission into a hot fury of bullets and dead cops.

The challenge level and fun factor I find are linked to access to competent teammates, which are in turn affected by the amount of big guns or perk decks unlocked in DLC. While this is somewhat of an annoyance, and you sometimes find crappy team mates, it hardly cripples the game on the spectrum of P2W. I see it as a coop game, and if your buddy has better guns you should be happy. It’s collective winning. If there were a PVP element I would disagree, but KD isn’t affected. You can still access DLC maps/heists if someone else hosts and get achievements for it, just not host the DLC maps you don’t have yourself.

As mentioned, DLC has a big impact on some of the character/weapon/class customisation options. If you don't have any DLC of which to speak of, you may find yourself underpowered in a few cases. They also have a whole micro transaction business model that apparently breaks the game. These come in form of safes, which are dropped randomly in loot at the end of heists along with the more rare drills. The drills can be purchased online and when combined with safes give a random weapon skin. Rarer weapon skins give damage boosts. Can you still have fun without them? Yes. P2W in a PVE setting isn't that bad all things considered and the advantages the skins give aren’t that gamebreaking.

Final verdict:

Fun, I like it. I bought it during the steam summer sale for cheap (less than 20$CAN) and it came with a bunch (4-6?) of DLC. I don't recommend getting it full price and paying for all the DLC at their current average price of 5$ CAN. If you do, it may end up costing something like 60$, the average price of a brand new game. If only Gabe Newell were a Marxist. But Obama just haad to ruin that.
