I played through Rain World and its DLC Downpour fully around a year ago, and was excited when a new DLC was announced, as it got closer to its release I thought it seemed interesting only one slugcat would be present, I thought maybe it'd have an entirely different story, which this DLC is a new story but not at all what I want or even care about. The Watcher DLC is not like Downpour or Vanilla Rain World, it's just not. The world is entirely disconnected from each other, going from portal to portal, region to region, just for those regions to be either pleasant experiences or bottomless pit hell. Even despite the regions looking good and sometimes playing good, they feel so distant from each other, nothing feels tied together and there's nothing to keep you going.

I think probably the worst part of the experience is having to backtrack, and sometimes having to try to remember where each random portal takes you, and the map doesn't indicate anything about these portals or where they even are or you have previously found them. This makes going through the game a slog, constantly checking the map to see where you haven't gone in an area, and then hitting a dead end and having to go somewhere else, it makes every region feel like a pain to get through and by the end I just wanted the game to end. These regions don't even have any cohesion or real reason to be in them, it just feels like youre going through modded region after modded region that are cool on their own but make no sense to be connected, especially when there was no effort to do that.

Spoilers for the ending and general stuff. The ending of this game is... alright, it's fine really, it's not mind blowing, its just the conclusion of the story of this weird echo that you've been following in the game. I suppose it's somewhat cool to see the shadows of the ancients and see what their civilization while they were alive kind of looked like, but it was so random for it to just happen. I struggled to even get to this place since the preceding region to get there was absolute hell, like the worst area ive played in all of Rain World. Also just a general thing, the final upgrade to Watcher's stealth ability is weird to control, idk why it makes you float up and none of that ability is ever explained, especially how it changes.

Update!
I got the second ending for the game and it didn't feel worth it either! I enjoyed this ending a bit more, although it was far more the lead up to it. The original feeling of seeing the regions I had gotten familiar with get corrupted with rot was cool, but then I had to spend another 8 hours figuring out what I was supposed to do again. The corruption mechanic is poorly "explained" to you and I suppose it's meant to be that way but having to backtrack through the regions even more just was not something I wanted to do. If you don't know to access the second ending you need to go through Outer Rim to the left to the Throne and go all the way up then back down and open a portal and then do this for the 3 other newly opening pipes. After this, go back up the Throne to see a rot iterator, they'll say some stuff to you, but now you need to go back and travel from a corrupted region to a non-corrupted one and shelter in it, you'll see the circle on the web map turn purple. Do this for all the regions and return to the rot iterator and you'll see they have karma flowers growing from their face. This will prompt a cutscene that I don't really know what to make of, but at the least was pretty, afterwards karma flowers will grow everywhere in the regions so that's cool. I don't really know what this ending means so it was kind of nothing to me and in a way felt unrewarding to reach, but maybe that's just because of how much backtracking was involved. Needless to say, this additional ending did very little to make me like the game more

Overall, I'm very disappointed in what this DLC is, if you want more content from Rain World, just play Downpour, you'll enjoy it a lot more.

This game is AMAZING. I absolutely love it so much!!! The insane humor and antics of this game are just astounding and I'm VERY here for it.
Aside from the amazing story one thing I really really love about this game is being able to choose your pronouns. That inclusivity is really important to me and it would've made the game a lot less enjoyable if I wasn't able to use my pronouns.
Overall, this game far surpasses the DSAF games and I'm so happy for it and can't wait to see more!!! Needs more women, that's the only negative, I need to be in lesbians with the phones!!!!
