EDIT: Alrighty, it's been a another year, Steam is telling me I've played an "additional 400 hours", and they finally got around to fixing the issues. As much as I had a horrible time with support, ultimately it's how the game you're thinking about plays when you buy it (now, today) than the trouble the community's had with 343 in the past. I've turned the original review into comments below.

Halo, all the good'ns at least, has finally been brought to PC. It plays amazing. It looks amazing. And even now there's an active online multiplayer seen. Is it thriving? Not really YES ; even if it's a rarer game type specifically you wanna play like 8 v 8 or Competitive, so long as it's the near the weekend/afternoon for your local time. No server list, no dedicated , 343 have done an amazing job making this [set of] game[s] not only worth it for those interested, but for everyone, we now not only have custom games but a custom game browser outside of matchmaking, social or competitive. But wait, there's more: FREE OFFICIAL MOD TOOLS IN STEAM. The only thing we're missing is for these mods to be given support in Workshop. You can choose from any of the games to play from in multiplayer, this includes BOTH old and new halo2!

It's excellent bang for buck, especially if you've never played them before, but that's standard for a [set of games] that has been released [and even rereleased] a number of years ago (rockstar and bethesda could learn something from this..) EDIT: <-- wow that has aged really well :| . I'd get it here on steam if you were comparing with the windows store version; you can easily mod here, it's easier to sort out issues, the platform has better community, support, and install/update features. This will crossplay with Windows Store/GamePass PC AND XBOX one players, controller AND keyboard.

For veterans it plays how you expect (amazing in a remaster, no changes to gameplay at all, all original engines/physics), but have amazing PC controls and controller support, not to mention a plethora of modern advanced graphics settings. For Halo 1 ("CE", Combat Evolved) I sincerely recommend playing in original graphics (that's right, you can live switch between old and remastered graphics) as Anniversary CE really bungles the tone of the game and the art direction almost completely, and what's more is 343 have finally fixed and improved the original's graphics for new hardware, so I'm sincerely not speaking from behind nostalgia-spectacles. For Halo 2 (the only other game to receive a remaster) the new graphics are breathtaking in both their beauty AND faithfulness. DO go for the remastered graphics for Halo 2, and switch only if you want to remember what it looked like (Halo 2 was a rushed mess back in the day, really).

I've almost forgot to mention, because I thought it went without saying, but this has a SERIES of EPIC singleplayer campaigns that you would honestly get your money's worth alone. I shouldn't need to emphasise the impact these groundbreaking FPS campaigns had on the industry, and are still a joy today. But with the equally famous multiplayer action, the addition of ODST AND Reach's firefight/s (online wave-mode PvE), online dailies/weeklies and seasonal experience unlocks (these cosmetic unlocks, including past seasons' ones, remain available to grab even after they're over and can be used in campaign too depending on the game)... there really is something here for everyone if you're into the FPS genre.

Given Infinite just released, and its multiplayer is free, this is a harder sell now, but if you're ever wanting to play campaign, or this goes on sale, it's the better deal. Infinite is definitely a modern shooter, where players all have glowing outlines, huds are big, & voiceovers are everywhere. If that's for you, go for it. I don't think the community will disappear, especially with mods and custom browsers now :) In MCC you'll find the option to play old school almost- (I mean, you can go play Quake or DOOM for real reflex) reflex-shooters with Halo CE/2, all the way through to xbox360 CoD4/blops2-era with halo 3 & 4. Halo 2 Anniversary is a real treat, both old and new players.

Get. Enjoy. It's good.

This is the original review months after the game launched and was no longer representative of the game even a year later in late 2020, let alone now another year later in late 2021.

Making it a comment series (comments limited to 1000characters) for posterity.

But you mightn't care about that! What was all the support ticket hullabaloo I alluded to before?
Well, this is another ticket I have open with them.
You want to know what happened, well, is happening, with it?
They closed it. [i.imgur.com]

Saying something about 360 achievements. [i.imgur.com]

Jesus. I paid $50 for this. Again.

I have >500 on my xbox account. Here in steam? less than 50. Dont believe me?
I have something for those playing at home.
Ctrl-f in those global stats for "Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate".
Yay, some are carrying over 1.5% of all players have this! But see its description?
Complete a level in co-op on Heroic or Legendary with the Masterblaster Skull active.
Now ctrl-f for "halo 2: complete". 0%, 0%, 0%, 0%...
It's literally impossible for us to have "Like Peanut Butter..." and not any of the other level completes for that game.
This is one example of the literally hundreds of broken achievements.

Here, go look at the global stats.
Sure is a lot of 0%'s for a game that's been out for ages.
I know, I know, it's only reach that's on steam, and it's only been out for two months!
Well, are you a Halo fan? Completed a tonne of the game on XBONE? [www.halowaypoint.com] Well, don't expect them to carry over as advertised ! advertised to transfer achievements [www.halowaypoint.com]

Achievements dont transfer to steam. Some do, all the new ones have (you'll be able to see them on my profile; it's from me playing on the Windows store instead...because the sound works on that for some reason :| )
Now like the audio one; I'm sure you've heard a lot about this one [www.halowaypoint.com] online.
However most of their issues are usually user-side. Adblock, poor internet, something else.
But what I want to talk to you about is a different one, one that you can see for yourself is a problem on their end; affecting -everyone-

Probably the most disconcerting about this is that, even though I've had a bug ticket with them for almost two months now, it's not a "Known Issue". They wont officially acknowledge it.
You will probably be fine, statistically speaking, but the only thing that's making me write this is their "support".
If you do have an issue, as above, and like me, create a ticket over at support.halowaypoint.com , you'll be in for a literal-rude figurative-awakening.
I'll explain by informing you of my second big gripe with the game:

It's not as prevalent as the "muffled" or "muddy" audio issue reports, but it does exist:

This isn't my first rodeo, it's probably the 20th halo game I've bought. I'm a huge fan, and even after the huge anticipation and long wait for halo-proper to come back to pc, my fanboy-ism can't save it.

I'm upset.
It doesn't work.

You've probably heard complaints online about "audio issues", but this one's more severe. I literally have no audio. At all. I spent long enough faffing around with it that I can't refund it. It turns out it's EasyAnitCheat's fault; if you disable it, you have sound again. But this is halo. You want multiplayer. You want achievements.
Well, you'll need to use EAC, then.

Ah, Halo Support, what a "wonderful" way to "report" issues that will never be addressed.
Here's one of mine from the beta back in October, could've been fixed in a few seconds by changing a few numbers in a config file (some Reddit users even provided some great numbers on r/Halo back then)

https://i.imgur.com/0qcf6jc.jpg

Or how about getting almost 30 e-mails at the same time because all of your unfixed beta reports were marked as "Issue is solved, please report again if not" by a bot without any way to turn off e-mail replies within the site itself (it's 2020 by the way)

https://i.imgur.com/Ua8apS2.png

How naive I was back then thinking actual developers were replying to my reports and not a bunch of automated bots.
343 really "cares" about your feedback. LOL
