If you're interested in "metahorror" - the fourth-wall breaking, game-is-alive bag of tricks found in other games like Pony Island, Undertale and Eternal Darkness, IMSCARED is worth a look.

The full release version of a free game that surfaced on the internet in 2012 called "ImScared: A Pixelated Nightmare", IMSCARED's Steam version contains 2-3 hours of start-stop gameplay in which it repeatedly crashes, "ends", or cheats in some way to force you out of the game and restart it.

While the stop-and-go gameplay is jarring at first, it's eventually desensitizing. Thankfully, IMSCARED adjusts itself with this in mind, and drops the shock-seeking act in favor of unique puzzle solving that intertwines what you do inside the game with what you do outside of it. You'll transition from being a victim of IMSCARED's shenanigans to learning how to use them to your advantage, but despite gaining control you'll still feel uncomfortable not knowing what's going to happen next.

The implementation isn't flawless by any means - the uphill climb to the game's ending may prove more frustrating than frightening for some, and certain sequences may result in death desensitization. In certain places, IMSCARED is a little too particular about what you have to do in order to progress, and there is potentially a great deal of backtracking required to collect everything required to complete the game.

Even so, the feeling of playing a game that's actively plotting against you is done to a T in IMSCARED, and if that's a feeling you'd like to chase - especially if Pony Island/Undertale whet your appetite - then IMSCARED delivers.

(A word of warning, currently Windows 10 users are reporting rampant problems with the game's file-creation mechanic - which is required to progress and ultimately complete the game. Avoid if you're a Win10 user, until/unless that functionality is patched.)

I've typically only written positive reviews for games which I found to be exceptionally made, but considering this game has "Mostly Positive" reviews (as is the case for the creator's other works, My Bones and Verge: Lost Chapter), I feel compelled to write my first negative one so you know the truth.

"White Mirror", quite simply, is generic, bought-asset-ridden GameJolt fodder. The type of game you would normally be able to get for free - and in fact, you can find a better version of almost this exact same game free of charge online. It's called "Phobia". The story, asset packs and the flow of stage transitions are almost identical except Phobia's scares are effective, it has actual puzzles and it features a runtime almost twice that of "White Mirror."

The problems in "White Mirror" are numerous. No options screen (in fact, the creator encourages you to edit the setup.ini file yourself), constant grammatical errors, frequent loading screen crashes, an exploitable, buggy enemy, a key with a timed spawn, nonsensical assets like a newspaper featuring a YouTuber and a nineteenth century "wanted" poster, and all sorts of other inconveniences. The game is only half an hour long, yet manages to overstay its welcome by the halfway point and even end abruptly after a rehashed "puzzle."

While I can't recommend the game in any capacity, I can recommend two other things. First, that Steam take measures to end the positive-review spam that this developer has used on "White Mirror" and his previous two games. Second, the people who keep Greenlighting this dev's games need to take the hint already that the final product will be disappointing.

Oh, and the game's story is incomprehensible - mostly due to horrendous translation - and contains no mirrors. So there's that. Cheers!

Most indie horror games on Steam that are/were in early access tend to be riddled with incompetent gameplay, feature underwhelming length and show poor execution all around. Fortunately, The Ritual on Weylyn Island only suffers from one of those problems.

With a current price tag of $9.99, "Ritual" offers only about 90 minutes of game. There is no replay value - the single collectible in the game is always in plain sight, and there is only one ending. Despite those shortcomings, I find myself recommending this game purely from the enjoyable experience those 90 minutes were.

"Ritual" is an ambitious game for one of its budget and staff size. There are cutscenes, facial animations, QTEs and chase sequences. There is an overall cinematic appreciation that's missing from its "find a key to open a door to find another key" indie horror peers, and that's what sets it apart.

It isn't without its faults, of course. The voice acting quality is spotty, some animations are a bit limp, and the locations you visit often feel too empy. The presentation, while well-meaning and generally well-executed, feels "off" from time to time due to these limitations, but those limitations give it a certain charm that I find refreshing. And it sure beats the hell out of many of the bug-ridden horror snoozefests being sold on this platform.

"Ritual" won't make any horror GOTY lists, but I would be lying if I said I didn't get off this 90-minute ride with a smile on my face.

Yes, "Sylvio" is a first-person indie horror game made in Unity. From that description alone, it would seem doomed for genericity - but this is perhaps the most innovative, unique horror title of 2015.

The first chapter does a great job of familiarizing you with the game's quirkiness. You're granted a blunderbuss that shoots potatoes. You fight against almost laughably unintimidating spheres of moving black mass. The protagonist voices her lines emotionlessly, almost inaudibly. You may be tempted to write off the game right then and there, and unfortunately, many do.

Sylvio's debilitatingly bizarre presentation obscures an incredibly impressive gameplay mechanic that serves as the core of all the spine-chilling, goosebumps-giving, jaw-dropping moments in the game: the EVP audio equipment and its accompanying sound design. The true star of this game. (Sorry, Juliette!)

Using the audio equipment, you will be inspecting every corner of the map for ghostly sounds that you can record and subsequently play back and hunt for clues. Through backmasking, rewinding, fast-forwarding and slowing down the audio, you'll hear all sorts of voices from the beyond. Some are helpful, some are not, and some are even... hostile.

I finished the game in roughly 10 hours, though you can complete it in a solid 8 if you're not interested in finding the many collectibles that shed more light on the stories you encounter. To be honest, the game overstays its welcome a bit towards the end, and drags a little in some parts. Fortunately, the synth-laden soundtrack and static-ridden locations in the game provide just enough of a dynamic feel to make it a worthwhile journey.

As a closing remark, the main complaints I have heard are about the voice of the protagonist, Juliette. It's a divisive voice that may make or break your experience with the game - but she doesn't speak much except for during seances, so I can't say I identify with the chagrin.

Overall, I hold "Sylvio" as the most underrated horror title of the year, and recommend it if you're looking for something new out of the horror genre.

I haven't felt compelled to write a review in a while, but I think this game deserves one considering how quickly I've seen some people write it off. (I include myself in that category)

After completing Act 2, I think this is a rather charming game with some really solid ideas, if finicky execution. The ghost design is excellent, and there are some truly impressive individual sections. One that stands out in particular is an actual dialogue sequence with one of the ghosts.

The game is weighed down in some spots by awkward pacing, poor conveyance and goofy NPC interactions. If you can muscle through those, you'll find a pretty solid indie horror game with a creative style that sets it apart from the standard first-person "roam through dark hallways" genericity of many of its peers.

It's quirky, it's fun, and surprisingly frightening. The final boss fight is a trippy, delightful end that wraps up the game very well.

DreadOut has its flaws, but overall this is one of the few modern horror games I would call "unique." It's worth checking out solely for some of the cool sections in the second half of Act 2. Recommended!

I've been playing this game for 5 years. It's everything I've wanted in a turn-based strategy game. It combines CCG and miniatures elements in a fantasy setting with a close-knit player community, and I can't see myself quitting until the game itself has shut down.

If you decide to play it, it's technically Free to Play, although you should know that if you want to be a competititve top-ranked player you definitely will need to make some purchases. If you want to just relax and have fun though, you can get MANY of the game pieces via in-game currency and many players have made "F2P" accounts and maintained top ranks with them.

There's an expansion with 70-80 new game pieces every 3 months or so, along with a "midterm" expansion every month and a half with 8 new "Legendary" game pieces, so PoxNora is continually expanding the thousands of pieces it features. I recommend this game to anyone who's into M:tG or turn-based strategy, for sure.
