The first game to diagnose lesbianism as a disability.
As the kids say it, it's kino, it's cinema, it's peak, it's good for the soul.

It's an ok game.
Very easy and forgiving but never really seems to hit that sweet spot of comfy/dangerous, then it just ends.
Gonna say it was worth the price of admission and hope there is DLC in the future.

I bought this to support the dev Toady One more than to play it on steam.
All the key bindings and menus are different, there is more music, graphics.

I honestly will stick with the regular version because I've been playing it since 2012 and it's all ingrained into my mind, but if you're starting out fresh, no reason not to go for this version instead.

I miss ASCII.

tl;dr: Instead of making two competent separate games (one cult-building game and one roguelite game), the combination of two average games ended up with a product that is just... okay.

Having finished this game on Hard for my first playthrough, I've found that the game lacked any sort of real challenge all the way to the final confrontation. No bosses stumped me or any areas proved to be anything more than a nuisance. All the NPC quests were very easy and almost no enemy had any sort of interesting gimmick that really shook up a regular combat encounter. Bosses, for the most part, are just "regular enemies, but bigger".

The more I played the game the more I saw enemies that, while their outward appearance was not the same, had the same movesets as others from earlier dungeons. The dungeon crawling as a whole feels underdeveloped, something that wears you down with time as it's the only real "gameplay" contained. It is very easy to become overpowered and othertimes you feel like certain upgrades are working against you. If I could choose, I'd only unlock Vampiric (Chance to heal on kill) and Godly (Flat +DMG) weapons but the upgrade path is linear and requires you to choose most of the previous upgrades to proceed to the next tier.

Speaking of underdeveloped, on the other side, the cult-managing has some annoying lack of QoL that makes me wonder if a patch will address it but it seems unlikely. Lack of QoL such as:
- If you have two work buildings, one of which is being worked on and you order a cult member to man the second, they will replace the worker that was already there.
- There is no management window for you to see what your cultists are assigned to what activity and have to assign them individually
- Catching critters, which are a source of food, is bound to Interact (X on my DS4), which makes it hard when the thing runs in the middle of your shelters, making you talk to the sleeping cultist or interact with a building. Why not bind it to Harvest (Square)?
- The Enrichment ritual is one of the most broken rituals as it invalidates any sort of money problems you may have. I have never sold a single item because it gives out so much, devs could diminish the Gold earned by a literal 90% and it would still be amazing.

On a closing note, I'd say that if you are expecting a more traditional roguelite/like that you will keep playing for hundreds of hours a la TBoI, Nuclear Throne, Gungeon, you will be disappointed. There is a story here and once you are done with it, the game spits you back out to the cult and you have no real incentive to keep playing, unless you like decorating your base and unlocking a few remaining buildings. By the time I finished the game I already had everything unlocked, however.

Having said all that, I still enjoyed my time playing it and don't feel like it wasn't worth the price of admission. I just hope to come back months from now, have some DLC to download and play again.
