Bugs were fixed, thankfully, but I'm not buying another DLC on launch day.

DLC was still pretty average with the gameplay additions. The helminth hatchery stage looks like ass. Some interesting items here and there, but I've played mods for this game that were better and didn't cost $15. With the code rewrite, modding is also dead for the foreseeable future.

Music is great as always.

Fun game but balance is crazy compared to Risk of Rain 2.

It's nice because you can adjust damage taken/dealt, but if you want to play normally it's not playable at higher difficulty. In Monsoon, it's almost impossible to get past stage 4 even with good efficiency. Movement is too slow for the average map size, and there are many junk items (no printers either, and recycle is locked to a character). Enemies don't spawn when you need them to, and you'll never find enough life savings or smart shoppers in the beginning to make up for it, but you can just rush teleporter so that part is fine. Attacks are not easier to avoid due to the game being 2D, but they are more telegraphed, so it is more manageable with certain abilities.

I like the addition of the providence trials but some of them, combined with stuff aforementioned, make me think they straight up didn't play test this game.

Solid game mechanics wise, although balance across god arc skills is pretty uneven and limited custom bullets is questionable to me. Very short game too, and definitely not much replay value after finishing the story. Was worth the $6 on sale, but I would recommend just playing the older GE games.

The game play is fun but just has so many issues in other areas.

Monetization and bad grinding design for a paid game is one of them. If you want a specific build, you'll have to shell out $20 just to get 4 characters or spend 200+ hours grinding for enough shards to get them. If they are licensed characters, you don't even have the option to grind. Since most of the licensed killers have some of the best perks in the game at the moment, you have no other option than to buy them. That or wait for the shrine, right? The shrine of secrets continues to be the most outdated element of this game, introduced in 2016 with very few killers or survivors in the roster at that time. Imagine the chances of you, today, finding the perk you want, when the shrine refreshes every week and only gives two perks for killer and two for survivor, out of 116 and 103 perks respectively. The shrine even rolls for the characters that come with Dead by Daylight by default, for added redundancy. It might take you years for the perk you want to show up in the shrine, assuming you're willing to pay attention for that long. Cosmetics are also ridiculously overpriced (costing more than the character you're buying them for), but since they don't affect game play other than how shiny and bright you look for a game that partly relies on stealth, I won't talk about them.

Disconnecting. The game just halts if someone disconnects early in the match, either because they raged or they had network problems. The alternative to someone deciding to leave the match is them throwing the game and killing themselves after they get hooked. Unless the killer is just playing the game for the first time or decides to mercy, the game is over. Survivors lose. You'll experience this maybe 15-20% of the games you play, give or take.

Balance. The meta perks and killers have stayed mostly the same, although there was a perk overhaul relatively recently and newer chapter additions that further added to the meta.
  • Killer variety is hemorrhaged, where everyone is running some perk combination of Eruption, Call of Brine, and Overcharge. All of these perks filled the hole that was left by Pop the Weasel, another perk for interrupting generator progress. All of the new killers have some aura reading perk that remains better than older perks, like Nowhere to Hide, Lethal Pursuer, Awakened Awareness, or Darkness Revealed (for huntress/trickster). There are very few killer perks that come by default that are helpful for certain styles of play. And good luck playing Trapper in 2022 with default perks. You almost need to pay to be able to play killer.
  • Survivor balance is a bit more consistent, but mainly because the best perks are available on survivors that come by default with the game or they are just general perks available to all characters. Most newer survivors have perks that are specialist oriented, although a few have become integral to the meta, like Mikaela Reid for the Circle of Healing perk.

If you follow this game and you still think you'll like it, I would suggest just getting the ultimate edition while it's on sale, to save some money. You'll still have to buy any licensed characters, so make sure to mow your neighbor's lawn a few times to get the $100 you need to unlock the rest of them. Somehow, a moneygrubbing Ubisoft game will make you pay less money to play the full game than DBD.
