I used to recommend this game for years. its not anywhere the game it used to be which is sad to say since it was my favourite game. the prices of premium tanks used to be $20 CAD for a tank, 15 days of premium account and some premium currency, now its nearing $100 CAD for the same thing.

the balance up to 6.7 tanks is horrendous, it has been since it has evolved past tier V as the top tier. as soon as anything post WW2 was added its become unbearable to play. gaijin balances based on mechanical balance rather than a game play balance.

assuming you have never played war thunder before ill explain how the balancing works...

every vehicle in the game is given a battle rating (BR) and a tier the battle rating is some ratio of every component of the vehicle. for tanks it would be the speed, technology, reload speed, armor, cannon size etc. this is an issue because some tanks have very high speed, very good armor penetrating ammunition but very thin armor which gives them a lower battle rating regardless of the years they were in service. so a tank from ww2 developed and used in 1944 can face a tank that was developed in 1956. so a tank with (for the era) very thick armor can go against a tank that is 1.0 BR higher that has much thinner armor. this sounds like a good idea but the newer tank is significantly higher acceleration and top speed, faster reload and better penetrating ammunition such as HEAT. now with whatever calculation Gaijin uses to decide the BR of a tank might make sense, but two players with the same skills and game sense the one in the lighter faster tank will win 8/10 times.

while this issue doesnt affect me at the BR i play at it makes it difficult to reccoment to friends since i know they will go through this and quit the game and hate it after so many tens of hours of grinding. whic brings me to my second point

I am someone who has played the majority of my time as a premium account player and have still found it difficult to unlock and obtain higher tier vehicles. yes it gets more and more "grindier" as you go on, with the amount of vehicles and different ways to play the game it will take the most efficient players thousands of hours to unlock all vehicles in the game. this was calculated around a year ago so here is the quote
"In total, assuming players get the most efficient play possible 6 hours a day (42 hours a week), a top rank vehicle can be achieved in 857 hours of play or about 143 days (5 months) with all vehicles of a single tab of a single nation taking around 2593 hours of play or 433 days (1.2 years)."

now lets break this down. This is only for a single tab of a single nation, tab refers to the style of gameplay (Army, Helicopters, Aviation, Bluewater Fleet and Costal Fleet) Across the 10 currently available nations there are 5 tabs in 5 nations, 4 tabs in 1 nation, and 3 tabs in 3 nations. for a total of 43 tabs... at 1.2 years per TAB this would take 51.6 years of being perfectly efficient at 42 hours per week. not to mention this 1.2 years is perfect efficiency with a top tier of which you gain more research and silver lions per match than lower tier.

i dont want to play a game as if it were a career to unlock fake vehicles in a game that is unbalanced and i dont get a pension after i do it

TL;DR this game takes nearly 52 years to complete and in reality is not a free game. if this review is still up when you are thinking of downloading it DONT DO IT

EDIT: yes my hours still go up in this game, that is solely because im still hunting the serotonin i would get when i was 16 from playing this game
