I will outline what I like about the game first:

For the gameplay itself and the visual/auditory environment is more or less ideal. I think there are some things the original do a little better in terms of lighting and monster design but the remake improves the original in every way. Overall, this game is better at building up an absolutely terrifying environment, and the quality of life changes make the gameplay more fluid. The story was done a little differently, but with good taste, and I like having a character that has dialogue over one that doesn't. When it comes down to it though... to be able to play the remake and feel the same amount of fear I had with the first really is just a job well done. I won't elaborate beyond that since you can look up reviews for the game yourself on youtube if you want more depth.

Since what I don't like is performance related I will outline my PC specs:

CPU - 3800X, water cooled, nickel plated copper with thermal paste
GPU - 6800XT aorus master, air cooled, copper heatsink with liquid metal
OS - WIN 10

This is more or less to point out that while I don't have the absolute best hardware I can possibly buy, it's pretty decent, so expectations on my side are that I should be able to run this game well.

Here is why I do not recommend buying the game:
The first thing you will notice when starting the game is the shader compilation. This is amazing to see since it is necessary for running the game smooth on linux; however the game has incomplete shader compilation and certain segments of the game will stutter pretty hard with huge frame drops. If you replay those sections the frame drop will disappear. That is classic shader compilation stutter and I play on linux pretty frequently so I notice it very quickly.

If you think I am wrong about the performance, please review the digital foundy video I will link at the end of this review, as it contains every single issue I had noticed when I played the game day one.

The first thing I noticed was suboptimal framerates. As one does, you go into the graphics settings and adjust the settings. This game does not have normal graphics settings. The high and ultra settings are the same setting, and the low settings are the only ones that make a difference, which for lower end PCs it won't be much. Also let's not forget that although the game allows to see the changes in graphics you make in realtime your framerate is degraded until you relaunch. So if you really want to know your framerate after a setting, you need to relaunch. The game basically requires you to use FSR2 (DLSS for nvidia) which is fine. I don't personally have a problem with the FSR2 tradeoffs. Once I adjust the settings I was getting around 120FPS which is good enough for me.
My problem is with the game is the stuttering. Essentially, when you move between rooms, there is an unavoidable performance drop in the frames which no matter how good your PC is that you cannot avoid. I experienced this directly and can confirm that this is an issue. Some people claim to not have issues but I think they do not notice it. If you play any competitive games and care about game performance you will notice it. The digital foundry video I will link below shows it. It's there and you cannot avoid it.
This is something I have a big issue with, more or less because even though I have a pretty good computer I can't avoid it even if I wanted to. It breaks immersion, breaks the flow of the game, makes it feel like a mess.

I am not upset, I like the game a lot actually, and if you feel like you can run it and get by the performance issues then I think you should play it as it's worth it. I have been recommending the game to my friends, so there's that. I am leaving a negative review to warn those who take issue with the performance problems, that is all.
