Fallout 76 is a game that nobody understood at the start

{Below, the author gives a subjective opinion. This review is only of an exploratory nature}

Having become the studio’s biggest failure and received terrible reviews from players, two years later it was reborn, but already in Steam. This long journey begins in 2018.

A frighteningly imperfect game from the Bethesda studio appeared on the same time as God of War, Spider-Man, and Sea of Thieves. Red Dead Redemption 2 was released half a month early. Against this background, Bethesda’s new game looked very bad. The game proved to be a nightmare. Bethesda launcher and an outdated game engine served as a catalyst for disturbance. The game had a huge number of bugs, and the world was empty (Here I mean a small number of tasks, events, NPC. Players were simply bored in such a vast world). The survival system had no effect on the gameplay. On top of all this, Bethesda decided to add in-game purchases to their game (Let’s be honest, in-game purchases here are only cosmetic). The optimization and graphics were at a terrible level. Todd Howard soon confessed that he expected the game to fail and promised to make the game better.

But was it that bad, even at the start?

No, the game had a good story and a big world. Game engine "Creation Engine" was kind of upgraded for a new game (But that doesn’t change the fact that it’s obsolete). The game itself was just unfinished. But suddenly the community saved the game. It was the players who made the game fun, the world rich and interesting. Users began to unite and organize events. And the convenient construction system helped decorate the game world.

Soon the game was waiting for a large number of patches and additions.

But not everything was so smooth in the way of the studio. As soon as they fixed the old bugs, there were new. But none of that stopped the game from evolving.
The game was indeed constantly enriched with content. New weapons and armor, various festive events and unique items began to appear in the game. But at any stage of development, the game was in trouble.

But what do we have after two years?

The game features an analogue to the Royal Battle, as well as a series of story supplements. Wastelanders and the recently released Steel Dawn. It is also worth noting that the game was switched to Steam without losing players (Users who had a game in Bethesda launcher can link their Steam profile to the account and get the game on the new platform).
Now the game looks good and it’s really nice to play.

So to summarize.

What is Fallout 76 now? The game has its pros and cons.
The disadvantages are fundamental and cannot be corrected.
The most notable of these are:

Gameplay - It’s controversial here. No matter how hard the developers tried to please newcomers and fans of the series, it didn’t work. The RPG is much worse than in the previous games in the series, and the MMO does not meet the standards of other games. The mechanics of survival were also unsuccessful (the first part of the series was much more serious). The construction system is interesting, but you soon realize that it’s useless. It’s not bad, but it’s not good for the game either. On the other hand, the authors approached the collection system (garbage) thoroughly. Grind is really real here.

Shooting - it’s terribly unintuitive. It is very different from what we saw in Fallout 4. It is no longer a pleasant process, and the constant problems with ping on servers make the situation even worse. Due to the new S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system, a meta appeared in the game. Players no longer need to use any weapons other than what they like. The developers also decided to redesign the V.A.T.S. step-by-step aiming system. No more beautiful angles and repetitions of murder. Now it’s just not an obsessive aim assistant.

Balance - there’s no such thing as him.
Due to the new S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system (It has become simpler, more intuitive and understandable, but not suitable for RPG), development strategies and tactics (Meta) have emerged. It completely destroyed the entire RPG component of the game. You no longer need to get into a role depending on your skills. You can at any time obtain or replace cards for any of your characteristics. This greatly simplifies all gameplay and makes it monotonous.

Optimization - is terrible here. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the old game engine or just a bunch of models, but the game requires deep tuning from the player for a more comfortable game (The developers have been trying to fix this since the game’s launch).

After end game - nothing. There is simply nothing to do in the game. Developers cannot yet offer anything to do after the game. Only solid Grind and Level-up.

Advantages are as follows:

Not a bad selection of shaders (graphics in general) for the stylistics of the wasteland, atmosphere (The spirit of post-apocalypse is transferred admirably), collecting (This is a standard method of holding players and a reason to study the whole map, but it's done cool), great and diverse world, good humor and well-noted satire of reality.

Conclusion: This may not be the best heir to the Fallout series or not what we expected from Fallout online, but it’s certainly not the worst game of its genre. The game will certainly take you for 150 to 200 hours of exciting travel and will please you throughout the game. The game is definitely worth this. There are many flaws, but the positive aspects of the game transcend them. And remember, "War. War never changes", but Fallout games changes often and not always as it should or as we wish.
