It tries many things and succeeds at none and the action movie/game cliches it narratively relies on seem almost satirical in nature.
The gameplay is just ass and the successor is hardly any better. Glorified tech demos, both of them.

It's somewhere between Call of Duty and Serious Sam, but you're a futuristic ninja. Expect 2 hours per playthrough.
Game crashed after half of my fights against the second boss, if you pay just a little attention you can see enemies pop in right in front of you, AI is extremely basic and gets stuck a lot despite the very simple corridor levels.
Movement can be fun at times, but you don't get to use it much.
The writing barely exists and if you think about anything said or presented for 2 seconds you will have a bad time, but the bikini DLC indicates this is how the game will be long before you actually buy it, so that's a moot point.
The effects are way over the top. Muzzle flashes and blood splatters from melee block my entire view and I have to guess whether I am still aiming at a head/in range for my next strike.
I'd be pissed if I had paid for this, but I guess I'll get 4 hours of almost fun out of it.
Oh and it makes you beat it on the second highest difficulty before you may play the highest, otherwise I'd have gotten only 2.

Tilted isometric controls means this is very annoying to play on kb+m and the devs have been weird about it basically since release. I don't understand why they didn't leave in a toggle if they supposedly tested both a regular style where W is up and the tilted controls based on the map.

It feels good and the map opens up nicely and sometimes even in unexpected ways. The writing is pretty cringe most of the time, but easy enough to ignore. The ending is annoyingly gross, as the final boss keeps farting loudly.
I'd expect about 20 hours or perhaps a little more from the base game if you care about collectibles.

Bad gameplay, bad writing, a damsel in distress about twice per chapter. Heck, the narration even refers to a woman you're sent to save as a "damsel in distress" without a hint of self-awareness. This is a collection of linear levels tied together by "open world" maps. It's a mix of the worst elements of Far Cry, Call of Duty and Fallout 3.
The tedium of clearing outposts without any tactical choices from Far Cry, the linear encounters and pop-out gunfights from Call of Duty and the impactless gunplay and floaty movement from Fallout 3.
The characters have zero personality and the attempts to make the player care about Artyom's wife are infantile at best with extremely forced scenes where her face gets close to the camera or she goes on about how much she's into you. With a silent protagonist, it's almost accidentally funny at times. I doubt this works on even the horniest teenager, much less an adult.
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games did literally everything good this game tries to do much better, so just (re-)play those instead of this garbage.

This might as well be a heavily monetized mobile game, it's just missing the prompts to lessen the grind.

I very thoroughly tried to like this game twice and I spent many hours in it. The thing is, it does not respect your time. Sure, a game is usually a waste of time, but Graveyard Keeper requires you to craft a lot and you craft by holding a button and waiting until the bar fills up. So wasting your time doing essentially nothing is a core gameplay mechanic and I just start thinking about all the fun things I could be doing in those moments.

Everything else about it ranges from okay to pretty good, but it just doesn't justify the eternal "hold f to craft". Perhaps the developers realized this to some extent. I remember early updates gradually introducing more ways to automate tasks. But then you're going through tedious gameplay in order to reduce the amount of gameplay. I don't think there is a way to fix this game.

It's a weird ride.

Edit: Turns out the writing improves enough to call it mediocre after the first act, instead of being actively repulsive.

Gameplay wise it seems fun enough, but the garbage humor makes it a chore to reach the next puzzle, leading to an overall mixed verdict on my part.
I don't know why anyone would describe the content as "mature", as some reviewers have done, since it's exactly the opposite. It is extremely immature and hinges on referencing sex and feces constantly. Also, jokes about a fat character in the vein of depicting his exhaustion because he has no endurance. Haha? Never seen that one before?
It's not just the topics, it's the implementation. The attempts at comedy lack any finesse or nuance and seem to solely aim for subverting expectations through vulgarity.
The subversion becomes predictable 5 minutes in, nullifying any comedic effect it might have had.

All in all, I'm not sure who the target audience is supposed to be, because the humor's lack of complexity is suitable for children, but the sexual references would go over their heads. Also, do children even play puzzle games anymore?

the writing (both story and dialogue) is abysmal and the extremely generic gameplay makes me wonder when exactly third/first person stealth games died

one of the worst offenses is enemy placement and their amount, most simply have absolutely no reason to exist
I understand the gameplay reason for guards patrolling a sewer, but why does it need 5 people hammering the walls (due to lack of animations every worker just hammers stuff) in addition to the guards whose cones of vision overlap?
the controls feel inaccurate, level of light displayed vs level of light perceived for the purpose of detection seems extremely inconsistent

it has one thing going for it and that is fairly large levels with a lot of possible routes, but the level design itself is just boring

fondly remembering games like Thief and Splinter Cell (early entries) I honestly don't understand what people liked about Styx

A beautiful experience. I love how it exposes you to the revolutionary rhetoric that people often shy away from stating clearly.

This shows praxis. Playing this is praxis.

Definitely play this and tell all your friends about it and then search for other things the developer has made and then do the same with those games.
