Do not waste your time. This game is now in a very cooked state. Was overall pretty happy with the game up until their server issues started and their being next to no communication, and no support.. I have 5 friend's who are playing without a single problem, all playing on the same region, and only I can't play the game for more than 5 minutes at a time between 8PM-2AM AEST. No, this is not a client-sided problem. This game was tested on 3 physical machines on a 100mb/60mb stable connection. I'm actually done with this game. Hope it dies a slow and painful death.

Who am I?

I rarely write reviews, and only invest my time in providing a meaningful review if the game is worthy of it. Been playing TD games since the genre began. TD games are my go to game genre for chilling out after work, playing with a friend, and beating my previous accomplishments.

How good is this game?

On a rating scale, this sits at a 10/10 comparatively to any other TD game to date. This is the genre leader. I love this game.

As my friends and I joke about it, this a TD game for grown-ups, and is absolutely incredible. The developers have done a fantastic job at cloning Element TD from Warcraft 3. With new visuals, towers, game modes, campaign and a competitive/ladder feature, this ticks all the boxes for casual's and competitor's alike.

What do I enjoy most?

A good blend of tower diversity, tower strategies, balance and maps allows for a considerable amount of replayability. This is an important factor when playing a casual TD game. I keep coming back.

What about it's flaws?

Can't kick players from lobby

This game isn't without it's flaws. The multiplayer lobby is pretty buggy, if 1 out of 8 players afk's, the ability to "kick" the player just, isn't possible right now, so I need to create a new lobby just to get a game going.

Dependent upon all players in multiplayer to have a solid connection

I love the idea of having players from other regions join, but all it takes is for 1 player to have some potato internet connection, and everyone suffers. I've had some games which are literally unplayable, due to waiting for connection messages every 2 seconds. Should we all suffer because of 1 person's potato internet connection? I don't have the answer... But as a starting point, you could surface the latency/ping in the player window so we can atleast identify who the player is that's causing desync among the group and we can decide for ourselves if we want to play with them again. Alternatively, allow hosts to votekick with reason and allow other players to decide to votekick.

8 Player co-op games are near impossible

In the end game, forget about it, if someone builds a ♥♥♥♥ tonne of astral towers, the end-game is unplayable. There is a huge amount of work around optimization required here to make this game mode worth playing. If you're wondering why nobody plays co-op, this is something worth looking into. I run a GTX 1070, and this isn't what I consider to be a graphically heavy game, but late-game co-op will absolutely melt my graphics card.

Got any suggestions?

RPG Element

I'd love to see an RPG layer added to the game, by adding a controllable hero that levels up to add more player engagement to the defence.

More Towers

I know you guys are planning on 15 more towers and support for quad element towers. You have no idea how excited I am for this, and I hope the tower diversity continues to grow.

Hotkey's for War Abilities

We have hotkeys for towers, but no hotkeys for war abilities :(

Ran out of time, so I'll continue to add more to this review in future.

2020 Review

Background

I've played RPG's for over 20 years, I've been waiting for something next-gen to just, captivate me.. Unfortunately, this isn't it.

Summary

As a returning player expecting great things, honestly, as per my 2019 review. This game.. is just.. unpolished, and unplayable.

Sack your QA testers, hire some people who know what a quality product is.

The lag, the crashes, the frame drops, the unplayability, honestly, it's not even worth anymore time investment from me.

Positives

Co-Op

Can play a new ARPG with a friend, when it works.

Trading

Can trade items with your friends

Visually pretty

Games pretty, but you need a 2080ti to run the game smoothly with medium graphics.

Negatives

Latency and Frame Drops

Started the game online, first noticeable problem, the latency and frame drops. Holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ optimization. 15-20 FPS in town? 80 FPS in zone instances?

I'm running a GTX 1070 in 3440x1440, in MEDIUM settings across the board, by no mean's a low-spec graphics card, 15 FPS, what??

Makes for a simply, unplayable experience.

Movement

Movement is piss poor and very very clunky to navigate and move around. Does not feel fluid and 90% of the time, feel like i'm not even control of player movement.

Black screen of death

Well ♥♥♥♥ me, I don't even know what to say here.. Moving from scene to scene, takes an extraordinarily long time and I was forced to exit my game client more times than I care to count.

Failed Launch

Look, I can excuse you for this, you guys were unprepared and is a testament to the hype you and your followers created for you. Rest assured though, your game will now die a slow and painful death.

Online Problem solved?

You communicated your best efforts, apparently had solved the co-op grouping problem and allowed us to play with friends, it took approximately 20 odd attempts to join a server with a friend. This is your best efforts?

Bugs bugs bugs

Boss mechanics are/were broken. The A1 (L21) boss would one shot me when he phased and created AOE explosions with 2.7k life as a mage. I had pumped 160 points into life as a damn mage just to get through this?

Alot of the time I would teleport at the point he "leaped" (to dodge game mechanics) and watching him literally teleport to my teleport destination in a second (what appeared as though an unavoidable mechanic)... Like, comeon...

More bugs

A2 first major boss, i got a quest reward (which was a juicy upgrade), had an inventory that was full, got a quest reward, selected my reward, it zoned me out and got the black screen of death and eventually crashed. ♥♥♥♥, you.

And more bugs

My friends running around the game invisible now. Cool bro.

2018 Review

Summary

This game has a LONG LONG LONG way to go (Years infact.). Another EA game with next to no content. Story was not engaging (not that I play games for their story). No EA multiplayer means I can't enjoy the limited content with a friend... By the time this game is fully released, ready to go, someone will have already come along and dominated you as competition. Torchlight, Titan Quest, Neverwinter, Sacred, Diablo, Path of Exile, Grim Dawn and ♥♥♥♥, the list goes on, have all done what you have done and better. What do you have over them your competitors? A next-gen engine who still can't get optimization right...

Here's some words of wisdom, don't release an EA game until you can confidently look at your game and say, "this .... is..... amazing".

Negative Gameplay Experiences

Within my first 2 minutes of entering the game... I thought, "Wow, this is pretty".. I found my first tome and my game crashed with an exception error.. Literally forced me to become a mage for the first 5-10 minutes of gameplay. (♥♥♥♥ you, I wanna be an archer)... Took me about 30 minutes to find my first ranged physical weapon. I maxed out all archer/ranged related skill points and nothing really "stood out" as super helpful of beneficial.

My first underground dungeon and 2 minutes into it, the entire map area was blacked out, I couldn't see anything at all, no monsters were visible and inevitably... I died. Came back, and exactly the same thing occurred. Absolutely ridiculous.

I was casually walking around Ravengarde and got caught INSIDE OF A ROCK. INSIDE OF A ROCK, REALLY? I got stuck for 3 minutes, until eventually, it considered me as "dead".

Player movement does not line up with the map. (infact, the both the minimap and map itself, were ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ useless)

The lack of ranger-related skills, made this game incredibly boring af. Spread shot and Rain of arrows... I mean.. really? Fire Rain costs 12,000 gold as opposed to every other tome costing 1000 gold? ♥♥♥♥ kinda logic is that? I say, scrap the "tome" idea.. It's never going to work out well for you..

There is almost no sense of "accomplishment", there are some long and boring ass quests (which can't be skipped)... throughout my progression to level 13, I never once felt like "OoOooO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I'm going to destroy everything" even if it was for a couple of levels. I never felt this ONCE.

I think having played this game for over 1000 hours this places me as a suitable candidate for review. I started this game April 1, 2012. When I first started, I literally had no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idea what I was doing, hardly understood the concept and broke 3 playovers (hardly made it past level 60). Throwing in the towel for various other MMORPG's I found myself coming back periodically over the years. I have since made over 10 level 80+ characters and made 2 above 90+. This game's pro's far outweigh it's con's.

Overall:

Greatest mmoarpg I've played to date. (name it, i've played it)

Pro's:

* Character diversity - From a lazyman's max block tank, cast when damage taken caster, a character which does nothing but buff your party, a summoner, a ranger who spams 8 arrows across the entire map, a melee who leaps and creates an earthquake or watch a rain of fiery arrows from the sky. Use your imagination! There are hundreds of player-made builds, alternatively, play your own damn build!

* Lots of game modes - Solo self found (unable to trade items) or hardcore (die once, lose everything but what you're wearing) if you want to add to the already difficult game, try it out (my latency doesn't allow for hc)

* ♥♥♥♥ tonne of content - With even more content in the pipeline, these developers are out of control. I can confidently say, in 1000 hours, I have hardly scratched the surface (likely because I've never played broken builds to date)

* Challenging - You'll never have the highest sheet damage, your build will likely never be perfect, there will always be an item to acquire, flawless stat items are worth more than your weekly wage and level 100 seem's like an impossible feat. Clearing all game content requires alot of pre-thought, determination and calculation.

* Crafting - If you have a gambling addiction, this should fix your problem. Dropping ex's onto your perfect roll items only to break it with a low stat roll can hit you right in the feels.

* This is exactly what D3 should have been.

Con's:

* RNG - I've seen people drop mirrors 1 day into a fresh league, this is the most depressing thing you can see entering a new league, if you know what a mirrors worth, this is enough for you to commit.

* No combat log - No damage is displayed as numbers, there is no combat log.

* Not new player friendly - GGG need to focus on capturing new entrants into the game. I have personally watched over 15 of my friends pick up POE, then drop it, due to breaking their build, not following guides or requiring too much time investment to get ahead.

More to come..

Bought lastnight, could not create a character for 3 hours straight.

Went to Sleep...

Wokeup the next day, loading screen stuck for another 3-4 hours.

Got past loading screen.

Could not create character.

Couple of hours later.. Was able to create character and login to the game.

Played for 3 hours, died. Logged out of game

Half hour later...

Loading screen stuck for now, 6 hours.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ developers on the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ planet.

EDIT: Seems that these particular issues occur from 8pm-11pm AEST. Since then, have 3 bases, hundreds of ammo, 15+ spare gillet suits, a team of 7 and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unstoppable, 10/10.

Well, the game is incredibly awesome.

Downsides:

* Need to be able to pick/choose a party to play with -- I got stuck with 3 archers who refused to build towers.. It's like people just come on to troll.
* Need to be able to report players who don't co-operate
* Needs VOIP

The same reason I never started, US based servers, give us an Australian server back.
