Reminiscent of old classic arcade games, Gimmick is really good to have in your library if you want something to play in quick bursts between tasks but still want to keep your brain sharp since it's a good exercise in planning out your path quickly and making the best of your abilities - it's got that good "one more go" quality to it for sure.

If you want something more out of it than a quick break game, it also happens to be good for challenging yourself too, to see how high a score you can get or see how far you can go.

The music's pretty easy on the ears too as an added bonus!

Nails the ZX Spectrum kind of aesthetic pretty much perfectly. Combat and exploration are fun, though the rather limited map does make navigating a bit tedious if you miss something.

Though this all said it's published by known gross jerks Nicalis, so I still would think twice before buying it.

They say every pixel in the environment is simulated.
What they don't tell you is that each and every last one of those pixels is capable of *hatred*.

I genuinely tried to like this, but it's just too utterly shameless about screwing you. Scenarios arise such as getting murked on the very first battle of a run because they rolled a six every single turn and shut down your ability to damage them, the opponent rolling absolutely perfect dice and hitting you for more HP in one turn than you have max health, and just being ground down over the course of a run by bad rolls until any further battles become unwinnable due to the attrition - and in all such cases, no amount of skill or tactical sense will save you - the game just decided your run is over, and that's that, start over. Or don't.

Seriously, if I wanted to be screwed this hard for fifteen dollars i'd buy my wife dinner.

Absolutely buy the soundtrack though, that part's amazing.

It's playable enough, but severely hamstrung by not properly regulating the RNG. When a run can screw you simply by starving you of drops you need to ensure the power progression doesn't overwhelm you, that's kind of fake difficulty.

It's good enough for a muck around in but not too much more, honestly.
