"Overwhelmingly Positive."

Nothing more to be said. In a time of triple-A titles charging $60+ for the base game + day 1 DLC + seasonal DLC access, and so on, Warband costs a fraction and easily offers more than most AAA games released the past few years.

With every popular medium or genre there is always that benign-looking outlier, so archetypal and indistinguishable from the rest that one couldn't be bothered to give it more than a cursory glance... So given a solid recommendation I figured this was one of those, and worth giving a blind playthrough to really see what it's all about.

If one can get past the deceptive outer layer of seemingly run of the mill content, there lies an unpleasant surprise. Something altogether unheard of from other such works. Something that may have even been slowly built up and hinted at. Yet with all the genre-defining characteristics occupying one's attention it's only natural to write it off. That is, until the game finally comes in to bulldoze the cute little potemkin village it built before your eyes to reveal its true nature. At last the genre-deconstructing qualities the game held in reserve the entire time come surging forward, overruning any lingering preconceptions one may have had regarding other superficially similar works that come to mind when initially assessing what this game may and may not have about it to make it worth even trying.

You're looking at little more than a facade if you attempt to size up the game at a glance. While some works revolutionize the genre they're a part of, Doki goes the deconstructive route and takes a sledge hammer to its genre; the aftermath is what you have before you.

A decade later I can still see the appeal.

A lot more than I can say for most games...
