I really, really enjoyed Boneworks. But this game makes me wish Steam had a middle option because I'm really torn on how I feel about Bonelab. I do enjoy the game as a whole, but there are some things that I'm just not sure were good choices for design.

First off, I don't think this was designed to be a Boneworks 2 type of game at all, but its own separate story/game. However, I still don't think that fully excuses the lackluster campaign. Some of the levels were kinda cool, but its all basically relying on the body swapping mechanic. It's a cool feature and I do really like it, but I miss some of that atmospheric wandering style that Boneworks had. Bonelab's levels are very direct. It's clear what they want you to do and how they want you to do it, which is a little disappointing to me.

The good news is that the physics are still great. And yes, there are bugs because it's still new, but I still think they nailed the physics really well. (climbing still needs some work though, very clunky especially with the different bodies) Hopefully the 1 Marrow engine gets more improvements with future updates. The sandbox aspects are also very fleshed out. There's a lot more to do in the whole lab itself than with the campaign. (which is one of the big disappointments I have)

Overall, I'm going to push this review to the positive side, because I did still enjoy a lot of my time in Bonelab. (except in that Pillar level, that one can go ♥♥♥♥ itself) I hope that more may be added in future content updates, along with other improvements. If you really want a campaign based VR game, I don't think I can recommend Bonelab to you. But if you like sandbox VR with great physics, you'll have a good time.

TL;DR SUMMARY: Bonelab is an mostly good game that's hurt by its mediocre campaign. If you love sandbox VR, buy it. If you prefer campaign, don't.

EDIT: I changed my mind. With 2.0, the game has basically fixed all of my complaints. I've had a lot better performance, almost no bugs, and I gave the story another chance and I do like it a lot more now. Overall, it's a lot more fun for me now.

I preordered this. I freed up time to play this game. I was so excited for this, I really was.
And all I got was a pile of broken promises and boring gameplay.

The first few hours start off fine, but the game just becomes repetitive. The story no longer grabs you, and some of the features I was really excited to see (like buying new apartments the progressive AI, or those varied quests) just fell flat and some weren't even there. I even hit a bug that prevent me from playing ANYTHING for like 2 weeks until the patch came out. I was stuck in a phone call and couldn't hang up.

The graphics are almost always broken for me, and I have a pretty high end PC. Not amazing, but not every character should look like a pile of clay. I also hit a raytracing bug that prevents you from driving in first person because the windows get so bright you can't see anything. Some other bugs I also hit were the Arasaka guard guy in The Heist mission not giving the access key, getting stuck in a dialogue prompt, and a bunch of other stuff.

I really wanted to give this game a chance. I really did. I came back and reinstalled the game several times just to give it another try. But it's just not fun, it never is anymore. Maybe I'll come back after a while again, but it just sucks right now.

This game is great, very relaxing. You can make a lot of really cool structures or just close your eyes and let your hand do all the work. There are even ways to get new structures by finding special grid patterns. It personally helps me during tough times when I just need something simple I can build off of. You can do a city, or even flying cities! (if you can find the grid pattern)

It's very simple and relaxing, and the developer does add new grid patterns every once and a while so there is still new content. Give it a try!
