Early Access Review
ighty so. this platform just came out and has yet to get updates to greatly improve upon what it has going for it. This is because rn its picking up where NEOSVR left off. I expect to update this review over time, so for now you are very much going to have to pay attention to the "early access" and low hour count on writing this review. (but hey at least this time I wont sound so pissy like I did b4)

so, leme keep it brief. you may have head of this being "the VRChat competitor" (as if ChilloutVR wasnt putting that much of competition). Is it really? and to what metric are we talking about here? to put it bluntly its a lot more hobbyist that VRC. Resonite is advertised as being primarily made for PCVR and the platform pretty much requires you to have beefy hardware to play it decently. if your edge is to enjoy funny minigames on the quest3, this might not b your thing. I feel that what you are ment to do in Resonite is to treat it like a scientific tool for computer VR musings, tho you are welcome to make gamemodes within it, and it does work well enough for that.

preformancewise, yes you do need an "epic gamer" setup to be able to run Resonite at a "OKAY" framerate. While the Froox engine is very preformant, the unity rendering pipeline is noticeably holding it back. I personally am used to running VR at 20FPS with a bunch of old VRC thugs so Im personally not horribly bothered by this. (then again its not like I boot up Resonite in VR mode all the time, the desktop mode is good enough but it aint no true "editor program" experience, more of a "minecraft redstone engineering" sort of vibe to the workflow.)

I advise ppl that wana give Resonite a shot to come into this platform with an expectation of your first moments being very hands on and involved, and dare a say "a struggle". While you do have a decent cast of mentors and hardcore fans of the Froox Engine that are a bit more than enthusiastic to assist you, bear in mind it still wont be so easy. but, I feel that for the people that are serious about Resonite, you probably arent looking for anything easy, you might be looking for a hardmode take on VRChat at the benefit of having a bit more built in freedom.

do you have to have a Major in Computer Science, or Engineering to adequately play this platform? No, but it does help massively tho. REALLY what you need is the "Ima die trying to solve my practical problems" mindset/grindset and an unwillingness to give up easily. I dont think many people on average have what it takes.

I quite like this platform, I know this because of how often when I get my "mad scientist itch" Resonite is one of the many things that i will reach for to try stuff out in. I... well I have the hour count in the old place to prove my point via a measurable statistic. I don't recommend this platform to the average "sim" enjoyer (or VRChat goer), I know this platform well enough that those kinds of ppl would at least feel very out of it here. If you think you wana challenge my assumptions on that, then I encourage you to install the platform and see how far you can take Resonite. You can try but I don't expect many of you to get far without the determination I eluded to a few paragraphs back.

but hey, at least the UI looks less programmer art than it did b4. Also the new homeworld unironically is one of my favorite "default places" ever. Ryuvi (and the others that assisted) really is hard carrying the visual direction for YDMS.

stay posted for further updates, YDMS still has ambitious plans for this platform, we shall see if they can live up to such futuristic sounding hype.

EDIT (on August 28th)
okay so here is a smol addendum to explain a few things that weren't mentioned in the original review. these are details I felt needed a further explanation OR stuff that was recently brought to light with current events.

first off, during that NEOSVR development freeze they actually WERE working on Resonite (kinda behind karel's back). the NDA for that test has lifted which is even why we now know about it (apart from Greenz's leaks).

something else that I also feel needed to be mentioned in the 5th paragraph was about what someone should do if they are new to the game and wana start off on the right foot (this is by no means a requirement, just a "failure to do this will have a 99% chance of resulting in a bad time regardless of skill level").

You really need someone who has a LOT of experience in this platform holding your hand in your first steps in learning how to Resonite in general. The reason being is that the learning curve is about a step as learning something like WARFRAME or EVE ONLINE (maybe even TF2). You really are going to need "training" in order to get started. There are Mentors that you can summon from the Discord to assist you (infact I highly encourage you to join the discord b/c much of the oddly specific info you will need if only found there, and also on their wiki).

speaking of which, much like Minecraft this is another one of those things where having the wiki open in 2-3 tabs is very much a thing you will be needing to do, not even for the first time but forever even (I still reference it even to this day). the Wiki and the discord are going to be your friend when researching the bazillions of protoflux nodes and components you will find.

Performance... yeah look I wasnt kidding when I said that an "epic gamer" setup is required to run this. tho, it is not impossible to squeeze some FPS outa this (I should know this as I have been able to run Resonite on a steam deck, it doesnt have a lot of power but enough). First off, use this launch parameter -> -DoNotAutoLoadHome. it is the equivalent to setting JadeFurry's Speedloader world in VRC. You can thank me later. the next you will wana do is also go into the settings menu, goto graphics, at set the max texture resolution to either 2k or 1k (actually why DOESNT VRC have this feature instead of verbally abusing ppl into making more optimized assets?). also disable all the post processing you want (that took us months to get that feature b/c required inventing a menu framework, Resonite evr'ybody)

dont worry about the home world, you can always load into it from the main dash at anytime, tho you MAY wana look into making your own home world that is much more optimized. I personally did that and it helps heaps.

what else? so, usually ppl wana port their fursona as being the first thing they do in resonite. that mighty respectable but if you arent picky i'd highly recommend starting with a quest compatible avatar with minimal amounts of toggles. the reason being is that (and speaking from experience) the lest moving parts your avi needs the easier it is to port to Resonite. also I'd encourage you to not immediately try and move everything you have over, infact dont ever do that. its better to treat Resonite like its camping, pack what you need and keep everything else you have in VRC in there.

Remember, dispite what your friend that got banned from VRC for 2 years is tryina convince you of, you dont need to spend all your time here, just when its would be appropriate. I personally only play Resonite anytime I wana do funny haha game mechanic experimentation related stuff. If I actually wanted to be with a large number of ppl, i'd go simp hunting in VRC. I have a different set of avatars over there than I do in Resonite. I use things with purpose and you should too.

the platforming is frustrating for anyone that hasn't pressed buttons for themselves in their entire lives. the story made no sense.

10/10 it has a little something for everyone.

Very tight movement shooter, rn it doesnt have online multiplayer PVP matches (I think) but the rougelike singleplayer is alright. (its currently in early access rn so I will edit this review later)

ima b upfront about this, this is one of those creative toy games so don't go looking for "an engaging story mode". instead, ya wana come into this looking to ♥♥♥♥ around and exploit it.

anyway, I personally never played boneworks but was intrigued by the game to consider it. then this game comes out with a rather simple avatar system that honestly captured my attention faster that you'd expect. (the game gives you the ability to at least wear one of these avatars VERY early on). SDK uses unity so you should be able to shoehorn just about any VRChat avatar into this game with not a lot of effort. using your newfound abilities to make just about any playermodel in existence you can now pretty much CQC your way through the entire campaign.

(ngl, there is something about the way one of my... "bottom heavy" avatars handled in this game that honestly really vibed out with me on a very deep level, and it was literally the fact that piloting the upper half of a ragoll is what gave me such a sensation I thought I never feel in my life.)

if you do like pure survival games with a little bit of base building, then you may ignore the thumbs down on this. otherwise you would prolly have as much fun playing modded minecraft underwater.

personally I love me some grapple hook movement shooters. problem is that VR isnt exactly kosher for this sort of thing. (tbh this is a bit based given the fact I have motion sickness, and rily only prefer to use VR in casual circumstances)
