This game has some really great points, but some possible, yet inherent, downsides. I have played guitar for more than a decade, and despite my bias against the whole idea of a videogame as a learning tool, this manages to be a fun game and a decent learning tool. I would not reccomend it for somebody who has just bought a guitar and is just now learning simple because one could become entirely dependent—for learning—upon the mechanisms in the game instead of learning to read sheet music or tab. Anybody who has played for more than a month would most likely benefit from it assuming he/she had sufficient knowledge on basic chords and a elementary understanding of scales. The game will teach quite well, and will introduce a varied array of topics such as vibrato and harmonics with mini-lessons. Because of this, one must ensure that the styles and genres represented by the songs that come with the game are appealing and represent where he/she would like to be musically in the future. Even if the songs are unappealing, they serve to encompass a variety of technical skills; as long as one ensures that he/she is utilizing proper form, technique, and rythym, his/her use of the game should yield a well rounded guitar player. The songs are also fairly easy; learning from rock music is much easier than learning from a more demanding style, so use it as a launching pad to get started—even if rock isn't the first choice. Just don't expect the game to provide motivation—it's only going to roughly assess the player and provide the next step, which can be extremely difficult when one is teaching himself or herself.
