I believe, in this case, we think very much alike. Thank you for your post, I hope others read it and perhaps it may give them a new way of looking at the medium. The preservation movement in gaming, while existent, has yet to make an impact on the industry (or its consumers). The reluctance to embrace game (i.e., art) preservation is sad. Especially with so many within the Industry actively trying to shut the movement down. It's mind-numbing.

@chthonic : I have not played Sunset yet, thought. But Luxuria Superbia is one of my all-time favorite games. It’s like a perfect metaphor of sex: there are no rules explained and you should learn the cadency and body response of each flower to entering in an hypnotic state of trance while you try to give the max of pleasure. This in combination with the music and the artistic design make a perfect game, a truly underrated masterpiece. And for example, The Path was the main inspiration for The Stanley Parable. And Bientot l’ete is a fascinating online experiment. So I can say that Tales of Tales is a studio that I truly respect.
chthonic 28 Jan, 2016 @ 9:18am
Bought 140 and Boson X, looking forward to play them soon.
What do you think about Tale of Tales production? Sunset was such an inconsistent game for me. It had gorgeous aesthetics and noble, innovative idea, but game design was so uninspired. Just like they wanted to make some passive object (sets) instead of experience for player. I think that was one of the flaws of their design philosophy and one of the reasons of their commercial failure.
Epilexia 28 Jan, 2016 @ 5:22am
@chthonic : Oh, I love the rating system in your profile, a great way of knowing your perception about every single game in your library. I can’t recommend you enough 140, a truly underrated masterpiece made by one of the co-creators of Limbo. And yeah, Fotonica is an amazing game, Santa Ragione is one of my favorite studios and Wheels of Aurelia one of my most anticipated games this year. If you enjoyed Fotonica you should play Boson X, a masterpiece in its level design, it feels like an infinite runner designed by Nintendo EAD.
chthonic 28 Jan, 2016 @ 2:53am
I must say that I discovered a lot of interesting games thanks to your profile. Most of them are still on my wishlist/backlog, but titles I've already tried (Fotonica and Particle Mace) were just amazing.

@tenshi_a : Your grade of passion for the things that you love is contagious. Knowing that Jeff Minter is one of your favorite artists puts his figure in a pedestal for me. I expect to be able to play Space Giraffe soon, if in December is not discounted I will pay the full price for the game. But I need some Jeff Minter love in my life.
tenshi_a 30 Nov, 2015 @ 12:12pm
Sorry to go on about him, but coincidentally - Jeff Minter & his partner Giles have just begun teasing some new "digital narcotics" - coming for PS4 and its VR headset. The way Giles describes it, the thing they are making sounds like it's going to be really, really amazing. Whatever they have made, I might end up buying a PS4 + VR headset just for this!

If I ever see Space Giraffe at a discount, or in a bundle, I'll let you know. I've only ever seen it in two bundles before - a Bundle In A Box, and a Blink Bundle - and both of those bundles are out of business now!
Epilexia 25 Nov, 2015 @ 6:36pm
@tenshi_a : Space Giraffe is one of my most wanted games, I was expecting to buy it in this Steam sales, but sadly it has not been discounted. I'm a great fan of Jeff Minter as well. And most importantly, one of my favorite developers, Paul Marrable, the creator of my favorite game in 2015, Horizon Shift, really venerates Space Giraffe and he always talk of this game as a great influence in his work.
tenshi_a 25 Nov, 2015 @ 6:26pm
Being a super nice fellow to his fans, Mr Minter has put roms up of his old games on his website: http://www.minotaurproject.co.uk/softography.php

The other thing he makes, as well as games, is light synths - he has synesthesia so when he listens to music he sees lights, and he's spent a large portion of his life trying to express that. So he made light synths for use in music concerts, and visualisers for the Nuon and for the Xbox 360.

He built the game Space Giraffe on top of that visualiser, and it looks crazy, and most people who played it didn't understand it at all and gave it bad reviews, but I think it's the best game he ever made.

His newest big release was TxK for PS Vita, which is a portable updated version of Tempest 2000. I'm in the top 10 "Classic" leaderboard. :) He got into legal trouble with Atari though, so the VR versions they were making had to be cancelled. :( It's a big shame - I demoed it on Oculus Rift, and it was amazing!
tenshi_a 25 Nov, 2015 @ 6:10pm
If you haven't done so before, you should definitely check out the work of Jeff Minter aka "Yak" whose one-man company "Llamasoft" made Batalyx ....and lots of other things. Jeff Minter was an absolute legend of the UK gaming scene in the 80s and 90s - pretty much anyone who playing computer games in the 1980s still regards him as a hero (including me!)

His most internationally famous work was Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar, but before that, he was known in the UK for making little psychedelic games full of hooved animals and comedy - and he also made a lawnmowing simulator called "Hovver Bovver" which was quite fun. :)
tenshi_a 21 Nov, 2015 @ 11:09am
The English iOS version had its setting changed, so it takes place in Canada rather than Japan, the background images were replaced by photos of a Canadian ski lodge, and people in the game now use smartphones. I think in the PS1 version of the game there might have been a "mystery dungeon" easter egg based on the Torneko Mystery Dungeon game... but I don't think that's in the iOS version either.

The story really reminded me of something else, perhaps the story had been borrowed for either a "Kindaichi Case Files" or "Detective Conan" later on, and I'd read / seen that before this one.

Anyway, I thought I would mention it in case you're interested. :)
tenshi_a 21 Nov, 2015 @ 11:09am
Are you fluent in Japanese? Just so I have an idea what to talk to you about. :) I can only understand a little spoken Japanese and read English words in katakana, but I get by, and sometimes play old Japanese games just to try things and see what they offer.

One Chunsoft VN that's out in English which didn't get much attention is the old SNES game "Kamaitachi no Yoru" got localised into English and released on iOS by Aksys under the name "Banshee's Last Cry". It's a horror / mystery story about murders that take place in an isolated ski lodge.
Epilexia 21 Nov, 2015 @ 12:55am
@tenshi_a : I need to say that I’m one of the greatest experts in the world documenting the Japanese development for consoles, and I tend to know every hidden or obscure game, no matter the system or year. So yes, I played 999, and I know the existence of its sequel. Chunsoft is with Treasure or Love de Lic one of my all-time favorite studios. I played Steins;Gate on PC a bit, but honestly, I prefer to see if it comes to Steam to complete it. It has the consideration of a true modern classic, and after reading your impressions, it’s for sure a TOP priority for me :)
tenshi_a 20 Nov, 2015 @ 11:02am
Another Japanese VN which I liked is Steins;Gate. It's a story about a group of young adults in the year 2010 (when the story was written), who have a science club and attempt to make a time machine. I read the PS Vita version. The science and technology in this one definitely felt much weaker, or at least - the author's ability to get me to believe in the science and technology as explaines in the story wasn't as good - it felt like it was full of holes. I also felt that the scientific explanations were a bit repetitive and didn't have so much charm, but I did enjoy the story and character interactions, and think that the VN was overall rather good.
tenshi_a 20 Nov, 2015 @ 10:58am
Some Japanese VNs you might like would be the "Zero Escape" games: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) for Nintendo DS, and Virtue's Last Reward for either Nintendo 3DS or PS Vita. There's a third one being made as well.

On the surface, they are horror stories about a cruel game where people are trapped in a series of rooms containing puzzles under the threat of death. Underneath, there's a ton of philosophy and history and science and bizarre occurences and pseudoscience intermingled in the story, so you find yourself questioning what's real and what's just been made up by the author.
Epilexia 20 Nov, 2015 @ 7:34am
@Callie Maggotbone : I intentionally omitted Hatoful Boyfriend because the limit of characters in the commentaries. But I share all your impressions about the game. For years I was an enthusiast of the Interactive Fiction genre surged in the early 2000s, before the indie boom. Experimental games with text prompts. So I always saw a lot of missed potential in the Visual Novel genre with its typical fan-service and gratuitous sex. Hatoful Boyfriend, like Christine Love visual novels (Analogue: A Hate Story, etc) are brilliant examples of the genre used well. With a mature writing that at the same time is respectful with the Japanese conventions. I’m open to any suggestion in other Japanese visual novels.
Butlarian Jihadist 18 Nov, 2015 @ 6:38am
You forgot to mention ‘hatoful boyfriend’ which I assume you haven't played before. I do have a personal obsession with the specific "galgame" genre under the influence of animation influx in my generation. At a first glance this game appears to be a parodistic and comical take on the stereotypical romance simulation/visual novel genre, but it’s really more than that. The unsettling worldview gradually unravels and takes form like a puzzle piece as you complete each character’s storyline in game. *Spoiler alert*
I think it’s quite deep and unconventional game as it touches on themes such as racial(human-animal in this case?) conflicts, political conspiracies, time traveling and evil cult practices. Maybe this is just my over interpretation. But definitely check this one out.
Epilexia 17 Nov, 2015 @ 6:47am
@Callie Maggotbone : Seeing that both have a very similar taste, it will be a pleasure to learn from you to discover new games. As important as knowing an artistic context, is to learn for others for creating a living indie scene. Because the prime function of the art is to communicate ideas, and nothing creates a greater psychological tie between human beings that to have a similar artistic perception.
Epilexia 17 Nov, 2015 @ 6:47am
@Callie Maggotbone : Many thanks for your humble words, I really believe in an interdisciplinary approach to arts, with Erwin Panofsky being one of my favorite art historians. All the creators are influenced by the artistic context of their current time. I played ‘I Have no Mouth’ when it was first released years ago, and it was with ‘Dreamweb’ my all-time favorite adventure game. ‘Gods will be watching’ is one of the favorite games for a lot of persons with a similar taste to mine, so it’s marked as a priority. With ‘Papers, Please’, an absolute masterpiece, I need to find the correct mood, it’s a very emotive and intense experience. And ‘Fran Bow’ is one of these examples that like ‘The Cat Lady’, was completely ignored by the gaming press. But that is on my radar thanks to a lot of effusive recommendations from friends.
Butlarian Jihadist 17 Nov, 2015 @ 6:11am
Thanks for the add! I came across some some of your reviews and loved your interdisciplinary approach to analyzing and synthesizing concepts. I noticed that you are playing "Gods will be watching" and I highly recommend finishing the game. It's definitely one of my most favorite games on steam. The lines, plot, theme and game mechanics is absolutely brilliant. Also check out 'Fran Bow', 'Papers, Please', 'I have no mouth, and I must scream' and 'hatoful boyfriend'. Nice meeting you :steamhappy:
