Up until the last update, this would have been a definite recommend. But I can't say that anymore with the Gateway update. It has introduced too many things that make it impossible to enjoy as a casual game.

Stamina takes over 3 minutes now to get back to normal and seems to run out in half the time it did before. It might not be draining any faster but the recovering being so slow, sure makes it feel that way. Not to mention that you can't regain stamina even slowly while walking. So its endless, run and sit, run and sit. No strategic walking and running to allow it to refill but while still keeping on the move. Stamina management is no longer a thing. Just run and sit.

Injuries can take 20 minutes to heal, and again won't heal at all unless you sit. So more sitting time.

The map. The map looks amazing but it does not lead itself to exploring or going anywhere but 2 places. And those 2 places have one lake and a long river right along the length of them, which is endlessly full of Denos. So when you want a drink, you have to run half of the map to a safe spot, get a drink, then run back again. And that is most of you life as an adult now. Running back and forth for water. Sure you can go other places, but guess what? No one is there, and even that would be fine, I love playing solo, but there is no NPC prey there either. So you can barely survive. There is a reason why everyone is hanging around the only semi flat area of map, that contains most of the drinking water and 90% of the prey. So whats the point?

And my last major gripe is the fog. Oh dear the fog. The weather added to the game is great, thunderstorms look amazing. But the fog. Everyday, Every single day often twice a day, a complete blanket fog you can't see more than a meter in-front of yourself. And with the gateway map there are endlessly more up and down areas and paths that have to be followed as they are the only way to go, so add in the continuous fog, the up down map where everywhere has somewhere to fall, break a leg or die and it is no longer fun, its tedious.

And now that I think about it. Something has been bothering me about the map that I couldn't quite work out until i wrote this down. Now that they are preparing things for the humans, there are lots of gates and fences and paths/roads. This all makes sense, and I didn't think anything of it. But now that I'm thinking about it, that nagging feeling that has been at the back of my head the whole time I've been on the new map, has suddenly started to make sense. With all these additions the island/map is no longer open. You can't pick a direction and make your way there, however you want, with complete freedom. No you have to follow the road, or you will hit a wall or gate. You have to go over the bridge or you will fall into a ravine. You can't set your own course anymore, you all have to follow the same routes, prey is in the same areas, water is in the same areas, so everything no matter what dinosaur you play feels identical.

The joy before was surviving to adulthood, hunting, getting into a fight. Winning or losing felt OK and you would think, "lets go again". But now with the terrible stamina, walk sit, walk sit. Taking forever to heal and regain stamina, the fog and the endless places to fall. Instead of lets go again, it has become more. "I can't be bothered doing it again." And I know i'm not the only one. Everyone is completely gun shy in all the servers, only Denos attack things now, or people in packs, with fights they know they can win. The solo side of the game is done, because its just too much work and effort to start all over again because of that one mistake that got you killed. Like i said, I was used to that one mistake getting me killed and would think lets go again. Now there is no again. I used to get to sub-adult and then go on the offensive, I'd nip adult raptors with my Cerata, I'd attack full grown Carno's when i was the raptor, bleeding them, running away and coming back to wear them down. If i died, I'd start again and do it again. It didn't matter. Now when I die, its a big sigh and a thought of "can I be assed again"

The other night we had a pack of 8 raptors. A few months ago that pack would have roved around the map, threatening Steg families. Chasing carnos down and for a while being the map bully until some stegs or a group of carnos got together and took them out taking over the throne. Now on the new map with the new balance, the pack did not take a single fight. No one wanted to lose their character. A mix pack of 2 Dilos and 2 Cerata walked passed. and both groups postured and threatened. But neither attacked, because it was not worth the risk. A few months ago that would have been a fantastic rumble, the noise of which would have brought even more people, and everyone would have had fun, win or lose. But now, even if a side had won, they would have spent the next 30 minutes sitting and healing. Hoping enough food was around not to loose their buffs. The joy of the fight has left the servers. Instead the pack sat around for the next hour, killing NPC prey until one by one they got picked off by Denos when they went for something to drink. A real night to remember.

If that was any of those players first time, I don't think they will be back. And even those that love the game will soon become apathetic if nothing happens every evening, and they will soon go somewhere else to find their evenings dinosaur fun.

Hopefully they will balance things out, lower the fog, flatten some of the map, open a few more routes, but that could take another 6 months just to put the game back to where is was 6 months ago. I hope I'm proved wrong and balances will come out quickly, but based on passed experience I really don't see that happening. And that makes me sad.

I guess its back to Spiro until things get fixed, hope that there are some servers are still running it and that they aren't dead. Update - Nope, there aren't

It's not even half finished and seems put together over a few weekends or for a university project.

Before I start there is one thing I do love, and that is being able to inspect the body and see how the animal died and where each of your bullets hit and in what order.

The things i don't like however are. Hiding is none existent, graphics are cartoon like. It is basically a copy of theHunter: Primal but doesn't have half the amount of things added and that was an unfinished game too. Its also 8 years later and the graphics, sound and everything is worse. All of that would be fine as you hope it can be improved. But when you can't even hide from a dinosaur what is the actual point of a hunting game.

The process is. I see it, Oh it sees me, it charges. Can i hit it enough times before it gets to me. Stalking is pointless being slow and sneaking is pointless. Setting up an ambush is pointless, because no matter where you are, how you are hidden or how far away you are, the second you take the first shot the dinosaur knows exactly where you are and charges straight for you. No smell, no scanning the horizon for the shooter, no listening for movement. No it just instantly knows your exact location and is moving the most direct straight line towards you. So like i said before, its a case of hope you see it first, get the first shot and then can you fire, reload, fire before it gets to you. The end.

Again this could be forgiven if the game was beautiful but its not. Its worse than a game 8 years older, that was an addon for another game and one that wasn't even completed. It was so incomplete that the makers took it off steam and made it free to distribute so no more money would be made on it, because they had stopped supporting it and knew they would never finish it. I only wish that more companies and video game producers would do the same thing. Instead of leaving it on steam forever under the safety blanket of the Early Access label and enjoying the residual checks coming in for something they never completed and stole many peoples money for. (Sounds like they should be joining the writers strikes. Give us more money upfront, more money afterwards and we want more of us too so we have to do less work. Doesn't matter if what we all do is crap and we only did 2 lines each. Doesn't matter that the show is a complete flop because of our terrible writing we still want and deserve more, weather you make a profit or not is immaterial.)

And before anyone says that this is an early access game and they are continuing updates, then you are these companies perfect mark. I'm not saying that this company is going to abandon this game and not finish it, but the fact that you use the EA badge as a defence for all and everything makes you the mark for all the predatory companies out there.

What I am saying however is that they attempted to copy a much older game and they have failed to do so. They didn't manage to do it mechanically or graphically . Because of this if they want to get it right, or make it even as good as that older game, then they will need to go all the way back to the beginning, to the engine itself, and start again. Because using what they have now will always have that cartoon feel, and not the realistic feel that people have been looking for, and are still hoping will one-day come. This means that as they continue to update they will have no choice but to lean into this aspect more and more. As a result the end product instead of being theHunter: Primal, fully fleshed out to take advantage of new graphical engines, weapon physics, weather systems and intelligent A.I. will instead be Primal Carnage.

In short its not going the direction it wants or wanted to go. Keep an eye on it and hope it course corrects. If it doesn't, well at least they were decent enough to recognise the limits of what they have been making and have keep the price to a nice manageable level. So props to the developer for not laughing like a super villain as they type the price for an early access game into their store page while thunder and lightning strike outside their window.

It should be the standard for any EA game and Early access game (hehehe). You get it cheaper because you are willing to help fund it before it gets completed. And if something happens so that its not released or only ever half a game is produced you haven't given away a small fortune to what basically amounts to fraud, if not just basic good to honest theft, like many of these "companies" do.

Baldurs gate with modern graphics and Pathfinder 1st edition rules. Lacks the nostalgia obviously but the story is expansive and you can continue in any order you want. No A then B then C here. And your choices and even the order they are done have real consequences to you and your companions. Your responses to NPC's can push your companions away or pull them closer and even make some switch sides, leaving the enemies party to join yours. So no spam clicking dialogue or you could find yourself alone very quickly.

Companions are good. I like some and want them with me on every mission and hate others and only take them on quests because they are useful. You'll find yourself going out of your way to complete the companions that you like story's and quests. And when the other one that nobody likes, complains that things need to be done, and you aren't helping, you will find yourself mumbling at them about being lucky they are even allowed to tag along and should just shut up. This is excellent and to me means that the companions have each been given their own personalty and aren't just taken solely on abilities to min max alone. This is how companions should feel. Like part of a real party where not everyone gets along amazingly and are just the best-est of friends from the moment they meet, but much more realistic with each having their pros and cons and you able to forgive so many more cons if you like that person. You are however a party of adventurers trying to stop evil and survive, so for the most part you know you can trust everyone to have your back when the moment comes......mmm. However despite what has been done really well with the companions there is one glaringly obvious mistake that looks like it will never be patched, which is just unforgivable. None of them have a hamster familiar, so major points lost there and all parties feel much weaker than any in Baldur's gate, because of this complete lack of hamster support and hamster war cries to stir the soul.

Combat can be very harsh, making sure your tank agros the enemy is so important. If they get passed the tank or the enemy comes from another direction your back line is gone and without the buffs from the back line the tank is not actually tanky. The most important spell in the entire early game is not some aoe fire spell or huge critical strike, but the free casting of a protective shield for +1 on saving throws. Keep this up at all times or your companions and you will die, or at the very least be limping away barely alive.

Add it to your spell bar by finding a little tab of numbers on the right hand side of the spell bar and clicking 0 for your free spells, these tiny spells are what makes empires fall and heroes rise.

Great game, had it for ages and only got around to playing it lately, and I'm now annoyed that I took so long to do it. Looking forward to moving onto Pathfinder 2 and giving Baldur's gate 3 a go. This game has reawakened my love for these types of games after it has been dormant for such a long time.

TLDR- Just Play Blood Bowl 2

Bad input and UI. You can't tell when someone is selected, and then end up swapping players around during lineup, or having the wrong players on the bench. Seen many streams with the same thing happening to people

You can't tell when someone has the ball, you have to know or zoom in to see the ball.

Worst thing tho is laggy inputs and actions. You set your action, you click, you wait, you wait some more, you see the time is still ticking, you think, did I actually click? Oh the player moves and does the action. It took me a while to realize the delay was present. Before I did I kept redoing the action, resetting the delay or doing a different action resetting the delay again. Just felt like an unfinished indie game.

Just go back to Blood Bowl 2, so much more polished and also easier to learn for new players as they won't have the bugs, and the tutorial in this version is pointless. They spent more time doing movie clips than making the game. The fun and silly humor that was present all the way through out the other games has been completely lost.

Very disappointed.

All you had to do was update the graphics from 2 and update the new rules. That was it. If you had opened 2 up in a workshop people would have done it for you for free. You could have then tidied it up. Slapped on some paint and given them a nice credit and mention in the game or i don't know even maybe hired a few as contractors? And the job would have been done.

Also on a personal note.

Shame on you for adding micro transactions as well as keeping 2/3rds of the races for payed DLC. Do one or the other at the very least.

If you actually created a good game that you were proud of, then people would keep playing and happily buy cosmetics to give their game a person feel. Look at DOTA and LoL ffs.

If you are going to hide the majority of the game behind paid DLC that you will then drip feed into the game over years. And as a result will no doubt cause more bugs and ruin balances because they won't be tested correctly, then your customers deserve free pointless easy to make crap to thank them for putting up with that awful business practice in the first place.

Or open it up to a workshop where again, if people actually enjoy a game, they will add more and more content to your game for free, faster and better made than you the studios seem to be able to manage, time and time again.

Don't sink to the level of both, because you only drive people away from your company. So when the next game you make comes out and someone says "that sounds good, who's making that"........."Oh them, I'll probably skip it then, especially after that crap they released last time"

A Rant:

It really makes me wonder how video games ever managed to get made.....well ever. If they can't survive or be made now without 3 separate revenue streams. The cost of the "base game" (read 1/3rd of a game that isn't finished and nothing but bugs) cost of DLC's that a kind and good mod maker would probably do for free and now the cost of a new color, a new shape, a new picture! That is ported over from a previous version. Wait, whats that I hear you say?.......Season Pass............God@am1t!!

And you can say things like continued support costs money. Bull, these same bugs will still be here 6 months from now and you will send out an update once in a while and still leave them, because three quarters of your team has probably already been put onto DLC's. Gotta make that money. Look at Skyrim, about 10 versions of that have been released and the same bugs are still present as the original release. All praise Todd Howard (praise)

You will leave a couple of poor guys/gals on their own, you know the ones, the couple that actually really like the game, that have some passion for it. You don't want them in the main office slowing things down with talk of quality and making something to be proud of. Nope that's not good for team morale. So off to the basement with them, leaving them to try and fix everyone else's godawful work.

All the while telling these ungrateful ethical bas*8rds that numbers matter rather than 1 or 2 full game breaks, so if they don't have 20 things fixed every update they are the ones getting crap for it. Rather than letting them fix the most broken, hardest and therefore slowest to fix items first. Probably because its in the actual fundamentals of the dam game. You know that thing that someone put at the start as a place holder, something to build on, just to get things going, with no intention of it being there for any longer than for everyone to have a quick look at. But no one listened, and suddenly everyone had built everything around and on that placeholder. (Where is the slow clap emote?)

Anyway this is all complete conjecture. And is completely pointless anyway, because you wouldn't need continued support if you put out an actual finished product. All praise Todd Howard (praise)

But the sad thing is you could post this part on just about any game that has come out in the last few years, and that will come out in the next, and it will read just as true there.

TLDR:
If you have friends to play with definitely buy now.

If your going solo - if you like this style of game it will steadily grow on you until you love it and that will sustain you while you wait for more factions/maps to be added. So you may as well get it now and start falling in love.

If your on the fence, wait until its full release and all the things are added, like more factions, maps and the modders get their hands on it. Then you won't be disappointed and you will enjoy a very full in-depth and interesting game.

The Long:

I really enjoy the game. It just needs to be fleshed out a bit to help with replayability. I assume that more factions will be coming which is a big must and that will take care of itself. Perhaps as a personal thought, more maps, maybe with possible objectives/scenarios will help too. But there is already a map builder so I’m sure once some fantastic modders get their hands on it that will also be readily available. So hopefully a steam workshop will also be added to facilitate this easily.

For a solo player perhaps wait until these things are added and then you will have a great time. Not that you wont already, you just might be a little disappointed that you have to wait for these things to give you everything you would expect, but that's part and parcel of the early access experience.

I've heard only good things from others about the developers and their willingness to listen to constructive criticism and implement bug fixes and improvements, so my hopes are high for the future of this game and that all these things will be added.

The only thing that annoys me at the moment is the AI. It just sends wave after wave of tiny troll armies around to jack your resources that you have to chase down. Then when you go to explore the next part of the map another appears, building your own small armies to deal with them is the obvious solution, but as soon as you build one, the AI makes 2 troll armies and this continues. You keep killing all of these without taking losses and the AI is meant to be spending resources to rebuild these, but then suddenly it’s not a troll army coming at you but a doom stack. Where did it get the resources from? And never mind the resources, where did it get the recruitment numbers from? Anyway, maybe a little bit of AI number crunching happening in the brackground like in other games, or maybe it’s doing something else I haven't noticed.

Also, if you add a second AI it pretty much becomes a 2 on 1. I've watched their armies pass right by each other and resources and head straight towards my much more powerful army stack and just suicide time and again. It's meant to be a free for all not 2v1.

Long story short, I would like to have more large exciting tactical battles against the AI and not just be playing whac-a-mole. So some AI tweaks are definitely needed.

Despite this tho, as previously stated I'm really enjoying the game and while whac-a-mole is frustrating it's making me watch my progress much more closely and keeps me replaying as I try and work out exactly what it is the AI is doing. But I think many others will find it more frustrating than fun.

Developers, keep the updates coming and I will keep playing and recommending it to people.

This is just a 2D Mario Cart. Fantasticly frustrating, but is so fun that you never become overly frustrated with it or other players.

It is extremely fast paced so when you first start you will lose immediatly guaranteed but the game is so simple and straight forward that in half and hour you will be right on the tale of the people that we leaving you for dead just a shot time before.

This is still the beta so the solo missions are a little bare. But its the multiplayer that you want, it is smooth, connects quicly and so far I have not had a single flame or troll. When we die we are laughing with each other, even when its your own character that has just completely messed up.

The game has the game play and skill level that it could be extremely competive if thats the sort of game you want. However as I said before it is fun and cute enough for those that simply want to have fun can enjoy it as well. And you will have fun.

As its the Beta their is only one weapon to be collected in the multiplayer at the moment, a freeze ray that turns anyone it hits into a block of ice, but soon there will be more weapons added such a missles that seek the nearest opponent. (Red shells anyone ;) )

At only £1.74 around $3 as its on sale at 75% off I would advise you to snap it up as its a really simple idea, but has been carried out extremely well by the creators. They have obviously put both love and time into this game which comes across in its easy going humour, In doing so they have created a wonderfully addictive, social and fun game.

If they continue at this rate when it comes to the final and full version it will be chasing Mario Cart for the most fun racing game around and its freeze ray is more powerful than a blue shell.
