I love this game. I've made lifelong friends (so far) that I've met from this game.

IMO It's a perfect mix between RTS & FPS. Perfect.
Its easy to learn, but difficult to master. There are so many different ways to play.

Marines - Shoot the aliens, but the aliens move in so many different ways (wall jumping, flying, "teleporting", behind walls and PVE, etc) and to be a good aim, you have to master shooting a little different compared to other FPS games.

Aliens - Ah, this is both frustrating and great. Many different aliens to choose from, all have different gameplay styles and change your team's presence on the battlefield. To be a good alien player, in any of the alien types, you have to put in a lot of time, but it's rewarding when you dominate. The movement, the accuracy of your hits, and your supporting teammates are very important and impact how efficient you are.

Commander - Both teams have a commander that oversee the map that build, research and support their team. Marine com is much more intense, but its quite fun... and frustrating if your team isnt doing what you need them to do.

All in all, its a fantastic game. I wish this game wasn't as 'dead' or got a 3rd game. As of June 13th, the player base is around ~100. It's such a unique, fun game and one if my fave games of all time.

I was young when the original Dead Space came out. I couldn't play it, it was way too scary.

Now, i am a grown man. This was still scary, but i finished it.
Did i scream? Yes. But did I hit menu and pause the game when i got scared? Also yes. But I loved every minute... but it also probably reduced my lifespan by 10 years due to the stress. Totally worth it, this game is great, 9.5/10.

Performance
  • RTX 3070
  • i7 10700k
  • High/Ultra settings @ 2k.
FPS was 50-80 on average. It was playable, but some small sections (two from memory) did have stuttering which made it annoying. I encountered 2 game-breaking bugs throughout my whole playthrough (45hrs) where I had to restart the game because it froze.
Overall, i'd give it a 5/10 for performance.

The Game Aspects
  • Played on controller
The melee gameplay was perfect IMO. The best melee combat focused gameplay i've ever played. Multiple different options (stances) to suit all playstyles. The combos were smooth, and felt impactful. Getting the parry timing right was satisfying. The lightsabers felt good and the upgrades were meaningful. I have nothing to critique. 10/10

The story was okay. I think it was weaker than the first StarWars storyline, and it wasn't anything that grasped me too much, but it was alright. They throw a couple of twists in, which were fine, but overall, i wasn't that invested. 7/10

The puzzles & platforming were good. The puzzles didn't present anything too hard, there were a couple that made you think a bit but solvable...apart from that one puzzle... The platforming was also pretty straightforward but felt good. Overall 8/10

The world/graphics were amazing. I mean, this game is so beautiful. Would be a model if it was a girl or guy or gender-fluid (we don't discriminate). The main planet has so much detail and so much to do. The only think that's a shame is that the other planets weren't as vast, but i also understand that it takes a LONG time putting this much detail into a game. 9/10.

Other stuff:
  • I really liked how the story progressed and how learning new skills helped you progress parts of the world you couldn't before. It's really fun going back to place you couldn't enter before, and being able to scale that wall or platform and finding that treasure/unlock/boss.
  • I like how you recruited and helped people, it made it feel like you were making a difference in the world. ESPECIALLY the droid you see right at the start of your playthrough with his ship stuck in the tar, and how an endgame skill helps him with it. Just a fun little thing. This game has a lot of those little moments.
  • IDK where to put this, but this game had a level that was AMAZING. I've been gaming for a while, and its hard for a game to surprise me these days, but damn, great level. There were also a few other levels that were really good, but sheesh, that one level...

The Verdict
I would give the game a 9/10 overall and would recommend this as a buy, even with it's sub-par performance. It is a great game, and a lot of love and care went into it, that's easy to tell.

Regarding performance, the game would have been a better experience at 100+ FPS. Do i think that 50-80 FPS makes the game that much worse? No. But still, my setup is "higher" spec, so i can sympathise with older rigs and their worry for bad performance. I think at 1080p most people should be fine. From the reviews this game is getting, I was expecting much worse performance but it's not as bad as the reviews make it out to be.

I'd recommend trying it out if you want to give it a go, and if performance is really bad, then refund.
I'd also recommend EA release a game with better performance, c'mon guys, be better.

I bought a VR headset (Oculus Rift S) just for this game and let me tell you it was worth it. I'm 5 Hrs in and here are my thoughts;

Pros:
- Absolutely beautiful game. It is so pretty and detailed - I cant stress how much detail there is, its SO detailed. The textures are so good, you can push your face right up to objects and they look fantastic
- The combat is extremely polished and the gun play is very satisfying. Nothing like shooting zombies, combine, and headcrabs... Also you freak out when you have to reload. It's such a unique experience.
- The game is so immersive that you feel like you're in the HL universe
- The sound design is perfect. The music when the combat comes on is great. Valve nailed it
- The movement mechanic is top notch. I DON'T GET MOTION SICKNESS from this game, which is a huuuuuge plus
- The gravity gloves are such a great mechanic to pick up things. They require a tiny bit of skill but it makes the gameplay so seemless
- The puzzles are fun and great for VR
- Encourage looting and searching, which is a nice thing to have, makes you spend more time in the environment
- There a small element of horror at some stages, but not horror where you don't want to play the game, just a feeling of vulnerability, especially when you go up against the headcrabs or dark areas.
- Half life Easter eggs (if you're a fan of HL you are definitely going to appreciate this. It also expands on the lore)
- Its a throwback to the 90's early 2000's with the tech in there, so a nostalgic feeling
- I like the voice acting and the back and forth with Alyx and the scientist dude (forgot his name). He's genuinely funny.

Cons (genuinely cannot find many, so i will nitpick)
- I'd like the areas to be a little more open
- I wish the dead bodies weren't too heavy so i can pick them up and throw them around
- No crowbar :( (at least at 5hrs in)

This game is a no brainer recommend. If you're thinking about it or on the fence just buy it, you 100% will not regret it.

♥♥♥♥ sake Valve, count to 3 and bring left 4 dead 3 to VR, oh myyyyy
