Bartending is an interesting profession. Often overlooked in the vast field of service occupations, it is a position that allows you to converse freely with your clients, allowing you a snippet into the life of complete strangers who are more than willing to talk to you about their troubles over a drink or two.

From a literary standpoint, this also makes service occupations an excellent option for a narrative-based game. Think about it - a central character that acts as an axle between a multitude of different individuals, all with their own personal lives and stories to tell, intertwined between each other and inspiring the one that brought them all together. It's a tried and tested formula for success - and VA-11 Hall-A is a shining example.

For players unfamiliar towards the visual novel genre, a lack of interactive gameplay elements may discourage some from exploring narrative based games. The only "gameplay" to speak of is mixing drinks, which is just following some simple instructions. But there's no harm in trying out a gem like this. Becoming immersed in a world different to your own, growing attached to some very charming characters and seeing them overcome personal challenges is an experience worth having.

All in all, VA-11 Hall-A is a great game. The atmospheric retro graphics, the zesty electro-pop soundtrack, and the heartwarming narrative is one complete package that will leave you breathless... and tipsy.

"It's time to mix drinks and change lives."
