Fun little simulator, for awhile. I usually end up getting bored after an hour or two and unleash devastation across the world.

It's like a cross between Ark and Diablo. Lots of fun!

Though a little rough around the edges, this Chinese-themed open world survival RPG takes the best parts from Conan Exiles and Mount & Blade to create something familiar but exciting.

If you're familiar with the Mount & Blade franchise, you'll notice the directional combat, need for kiting NPCs, and activity-driven skill gain. If you're familiar with Conan Exiles, you'll notice the NPC system, the freeform building, and the tiered resources and recipes.

However, Myth of Empires builds on a familiar recipe by adding some new twists to the genre. The recipe unlock system is properly tiered and visually looks closer to the Civilization tech trees. There's a meta system of PvP ownership even in PvE servers, where the biggest and most aggressive guild ends up setting taxes for the entire server. The latter can be obnoxious, but it's not game-breaking.

Acquiring resources feels faster in Myth of Empires than it does in Conan Exiles, and the rate at which you acquire new recipes also seems quicker between steps.

There's an NPC management screen that makes finding your NPCs (or mounts) and checking their status very easy. This is good, because NPCs are a major part of the gameplay, since they help with crafting, defense, and exploration.

The only thing that well and truly sucks about Myth of Empires is the decay system, where if you don't login for a couple days and you don't have a guild to help out, your buildings are gone. I haven't tried seeing if the Custom Server option lets you turn that off or not. If it does, then this is mostly a non-issue for PvE players. If it doesn't, then that really needs to be addressed.

Even with that glaring problem, though, I give this game a hearty recommendation. It's just a lot of fun.

Gorgeous game with a kickass soundtrack. The characters are fun. Unlike other Roguelikes, the progression system means that eventually you'll beat it no matter how awful you are at Roguelikes.

Same kind of fun as Fortnite or Pubg, but much more relaxed, and a unique twist with the 2D gameplay.

I've played Destiny 2 off and on since launch. Despite some early missteps, it's turned into a solid, enjoyable game. It's one of my two favorite shooters (the other being Overwatch).

An excellent spatial puzzle game on its own, but as a sequel it's even better.

Early Access Review
I've been following the development of Divergence: Online for some time, and believed in the concept enough that I backed it prior to its availability on Steam. So, how does it stack up now that we all have access to it? First, some definitions.

Early Access Does Not Mean Finished Game

The game is in Early Access. Valve intended this program to be a kind of crowdfunding where people who liked the concept of a game enough could throw money into a development pot so that the developers could finish the game. In return, they gained access before the game was ready for a general audience. As such, reviews can't be made on the state of the game, but rather on the pace and quality of development. This is particularly true when the game has only been in Early Access for two weeks, as is the case here.

With that in mind, here's my review.

Pace of Development

Since the game launched in Early Access, we have seen almost daily updates to the game, and each one is substantial. Major bugs are fixed or mitigated, new features are added, and feedback from the community is addressed. The pace of development is very rapid. This inevitably means that new bugs are also being introduced daily, but at this point in the game's life, a plethora of bugs is to be expected.

Quality of Development

So how about the quality of development? Well, I can't see the code or the server performance graphs, so I have to judge this based on the rate of improvement, not just the rate of development. Visually, the game is not progressing very much. It looks better than SWG did, but it has a long way to go to be complete. A lot of the graphics are placeholders pulled from or based on SWG assets. That does nothing to solidify the game's own feel, and this is an issue the developers have promised to address. I believe they're sincere. Whether they can deliver or not remains to be seen. From a systems perspective, the game is improving by leaps and bounds on a very rapid basis. In the past few days, we gained full-loot for PvP, a lot system, new mobs, a ton of new craftable interior modules, bigger harvesters, and others. Network performance has improved, though not as much as systems have.

The Community

The community growing up around this game is fantastic. Almost everyone is willing to help each other. It being a full-loot open world PvP game, I imagine you'll start to see the usual roving gangs common to games of this type, but for now at least most people are cooperating. Interestingly, the community on the Steam forums seems much more toxic than the community actually in the game or on the Facebook group.

Is it SWG?

Not exactly. It borrows a lot of the features, yes. Crafting and harvesting are extremely reminiscent of pre-CU SWG. Combat is nothing like pre-CU, CU, or NGE combat, however. D:O combat is unique, and twitch-based. A lot of supporting systems from SWG are not yet in the game, such as missions or image design. However, this is probably the closest thing we're going to get to a SWG 2 in our lifetimes. It's certainly closer than The Repopulation was.

A Lack of PR

The one area where this game really falls down is in public relations. The developers need to improve how they deal with the public. I understand they're under a lot of stress, but the image they present is somewhat less than professional. Sometimes this is reflected in the game itself, with game text being just a little too snarky or even immersion-breaking. Thankfully, this is nothing that can't be fixed fairly easily. If they can bring on even a part-time community manager, a lot of this will be solved.

Final Thoughts

The game is very rough, with many key systems partially implemented, buggy, or outright missing. But we're two weeks into Early Access, and the game is already vastly superior to where it was at launch. The developers know what they're doing, but are in need of a community manager. The community for the game is the reason you should buy into Early Access right now rather than waiting. This game is going to be amazing six months down the road, but the community is amazing now.

I'd heard the hype, but I'm generally so terrible at fighting games that I haven't had any fun with them in years. Then I tried this in a free weekend, and suddenly I was a kid again, playing Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

It has all of the nostalgia, all of the "casual" fighting gameplay from SSF2T, but with modern (and gorgeous) graphics and a more-than-modern fight roster.

Wonderful game!
