I absolutely enjoyed my time playing BioGun and was impressed with this first effort by Dapper Dog Digital. I thought overall the game play was engaging with different gun types that a player could choose and leverage for different encounters. There are different enhancements that can be changed out at save spots but for most of the game, I didn't feel the need to tinker with these too much. There is a fair amount of of opportunities to sequence break which is awesome when I found them. Some bosses had a challenge but overall did not feel overwhelming at all. Most of the time, a change of approach/strategy could make most bosses fairly easy to deal with.

The story was really well paced never overstaying its welcome. It was a fun and gave the perfect amount of pacing as you are exploring the world. Sometimes games have sections that are overwhelmingly text heavy that interrupt the game too long but I never felt that in this game. Being an antigen inside of a dog was the perfect backdrop for exploring a world, and really setup the world well.

The standout for me in the game was definitely the art and the charm it provides. I felt like the passion of the developer, specifically with the art direction, really shined through in this game. This truly felt like a unique and vibrant metroidvania that I hadn't played before, which meant exploring was an absolute joy.

I did play the majority of the game on the steamdeck, and unfortunately, there are some reccurring performance issues. The game did have some stuttering issues at times which would cause me to fail at some platforming sections which did get frustrating at times. It was never constant but would show up frequently. Meaning, you could play a room with no issues at all but the next room would have a quick stutter. It was infrequent enough to not bother me personally but it did happen. The good news is I never felt the game punished me for failure, so going through sections again was not troublesome at all. I also ran into some bugs here and there but the developer and the community were super helpful and engaging to overcome any issues at all. Some of these bugs at times meant for some funny interactions (like a boss spinning super fast) that were easy to avoid the next time once you figured out why it happened.

Overall I definitely got my moneys worth and enjoyed the community so much, I'll be eagerly checking in to see how folks are liking the game. I am excited to see what the developer has in store next in the world of BioGun!
