500+ hours in - what a game.

Verdict: Worth owning, worth buying at full price.

I easily recommend this game, and have purchased it many times over for friends because I think it deserves a place in the game library of every person who is interested in co-op shooters. At $30 (full price) it's already worth it; at any discount price it is as close to a no-brainer of a modern game buy I can think of. Getting friends together in this game have lead to some of my favorite recent gaming moments.

Pros:

- Thirty dollars, buy-to-own. No micro-transactions, no predatory dlc packs, the whole game is yours.
- Hundreds of cosmetics and customization choices
- Great class balance and defined 'roles'; gives a fantastic team-based experience
- Great overall weapon balance, both within a class's options, and between classes
- Amazing gameplay loop - 500 hours and I don't imagine I'll get sick of it anytime soon.
- Wide variety of enemies and enemy spawn combinations
- Variety of well executed missions ranging from classic, simple missions (e.g. go mine a bunch of this mineral while fighting off bugs) and longer, more involved and puzzle-like missions (e.g. disable a forcefield by finding these 2 power stations, defend a hacking bot to disable them, then return and fight a big multi-phase boss now that the barrier is down)
- Difficulty scaling only rewards more character experience; does not gate you out of any rewards or unlocks
- Rotating missions every half-hour and completely incredible AI director spawning and randomly generated terrain. There may be a fixed number of mission types, but the number of ways the terrain generation and enemy spawns mix things up means that the games always feels fresh-yet-familiar.
- A lot of cool extra unlocks, and you can get it all eventually
- Overall really positive and helpful community

Cons:
(note: these are honestly mostly quibbles from a very enfranchised player)

- Some weapon mod choices and upgrades are bad/trap options in high-tier difficulties. In a game where shooting bugs with your cool weapons is a big part of the gameplay, this can cause a lot of 'feels bad' when your pet playstyle turns out to be way worse by numbers.
- Above is worsened by what feels like overly-cautious changes in some weapon instances (literal years gone by with no shift), and knee-jerk balancing down in other instances. This is further exacerbated by the fact that the developers seem to really dislike explaining and showing numbers for certain weapon upgrades; in-game descriptions will be something like "+ Nitroglycerin Compound" instead of actually explaining any further or the numbers effect of the upgrade.
- Progression can be slow, both to get to the cosmetics/goodies a player might want, as well as ranking up your character level to unlock the full set of game modes and choices.

Neutral:

- The art style can be a miss for some folk. It's a deliberate low-poly sort-of aesthetic, and while I enjoy it, some might find it jarring.
- There is minor time-gating on end-game rewards (weekly resets).
- Once you hit the 'end-game' having unlocked the hardest difficulties and rewards, there is only the barest of cosmetic progression to look forward to. (Note - made better with latest update addition of 'Performance Pass')
- The gameplay loop is most successful when playing with at least 1 or 2 people, whether friends or randoms. Playing solo is alright, but definitely does not show off the most enjoyable parts of the game.
- Games are peer-to-peer. No built-in ban/ignore list for players you wish to avoid.

Honestly, what a treat of a game. Worth every dollar, and definitely worth me taking the time to write this to let other folk know.
