In all the areas that really count Civ VI falls short of it's predecessor. The combat, the tech trees, the AI, trading, science, commerce, city management are all just a bit underwhelming in this edition. It's a shame because the cleaner, brighter visuals finally match the music in it's celebration of the culture clash that is a civilisation game. While this may be the reason you sit down to play in the beginning, what keeps you glued to the screen for just one more turn is the cognitive immersion. Alas, the 6'th of the series falters too often and you are all too often reminded that you are playing a video game against preprogramed computer agents.

Poor flight controls and awkward UI mar what is otherwise a uniquely fresh and impressive experience. The atmosphere, sense of scale and exploration is unparalleled, it's just such a pity that traversing and progressing in the game is so deeply flawed.

I was disappointed with the uneven level of care flight controls received. Assist features for takeoff and landing are great and sub-orbital dynamics are mostly things players don't even have to think about which is great. Alas, the developers have chosen to eschew 20 years of history in flight and space simulation on the PC by forcing players to use unconventional and unremarkable flight inputs for yaw, pitch and roll. Given how much flying you do in the game and that space-flight-control is largely a solved problem in video games I'm not sure why more care wasn't taken get this one correct out the gate.

Additionally, crafting and building is a massive part of the game yet has a similar lopsided execution in terms of overall player experience. Some tasks flow well, others are downright baffling requiring multiple task-switches to Google just to figure out what other games manage to accomplish effortlessly.
