The review will be split into two parts: The Actual Game and Misc.

The Actual Game
I've been wanting to get my hands on Ishin for a long time, but was unable due to the fact that there was no english localization. When I heard the news that a remake of Ishin was planned, including english localization, I was more than hyped.

The Lore
The Lore was great, a lot of plot twists and action sequences. I've experienced shock, tension, relief and I immensely enjoyed the game's lore. Acting on the characters was superb.

Combat
The return to multiple styles is definetly a welcome change. Every style specializes in something else, Sword is for damage, Wild Dancer is for close ranged chip damage, Gunman is for long ranged chip damage, Brawler is defensive (kinda). I also love how the game rewards you with more experience points for things like using various styles, doing moves which are difficult to time and finishing an enemy with a heat action.

Also to note is a drastic change in enemy behavior. You cannot combo enemies from behind anymore, they will turn around after 2 hits. Many say that this change is bad, but I think otherwise. My main complaint for Yakuza games in general is that they weren't very hard (I played on Hard). I didn't even utilize combos and had no issues beating most of the bosses. In Ishin however I had to reset 6 times, I actually felt challenged by the game (also played on Hard). Going for the back has been turned from "getting the boss healthbar down by 30%" to "getting a few unblockable hits in". Bosses also give you ample time to react when they break your combo, so you are not punished for going for the back. I like Ishin's combat a lot.

Side Content
This section will tackle side content. The yakuza usuals are here: gambling, karaoke, and most importantly: "Disco" makes it's long awaited return after Yakuza 0. I was happy to play it again. It also has your regular 2 longish side quests and a bunch of wacky and hilarious substories, along with, of course, an Amon fight at the end.

Complaints
-Slight graphical issues from time to time
-Weapon smithing is, as of now, completely ridiculous with the prices that are set for certain weapons.
-Ryoma sometimes has a very long recoil animation when knocked down
-No special indicators for unblockable attacks, which would be welcome
-The Penultimate Boss Fight was ass
-The UI elements are very slow and janky and you need to wait a while before you can navigate the menus after entering them

Miscellaneous
It's time to move over to the negative part of the review. I absolutely HATE how they handled specific aspects of this game. I'll go over them quickly:

-One of the difficulty settings is locked behind a paywall
This is absolutely unthinkable, especially for the most expensive RGG game to date. All difficulty levels should be avaliable from the get-go. I can understand things like cosmetic items, in-game boosts, but not a whole difficulty level, cmon now. Also bonus minus points to removing the tradition of unlocking the hardest difficulty by beating the game once.

-DLC is tied to a save file, rather than your account
This means that if you redeem the DLC in one savefile and decide to start a fresh new game from the start, you will not have those DLCs in that savefile. It's a dirty practice, but most importantly, IT'S NOT MENTIONED ANYWHERE AT ALL.

-The game requires an internet connection
I honestly do not know the reason for this, since most if not all of the game is offline. This however makes it impossible to enjoy the game if for whatever reason you don't have internet access. Also if you lose internet connection after not saving, you will lose that progress.

Overall grade: 8/10

TL;DR + didn't ask + ratio at the end

I have played this game for long enough that I feel like I can make a review on it's quality, and boy oh boy you should buckle up because I have things to say.

This game was my entry point to rougelikes, and frankly when I played it when it was only Rebirth/Afterbirth, I enjoyed it. But it is only now that I start to see the true colors.

I recommend this game to anyone that craves rougelikes, but the game has some upstanding issues that make me go "God I wanna end myself":

"Game, PLEASE, give me a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dmg up it's DEPTHS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ II"

Let's cut right to the chase: this game is VERY rng based. Now that alone isn't bad, because games like these have potentially unlimited replay value: every run is different. And I'll give it to the game, I never felt bored from the monotony of your regular run, because of the item combinations and synergies. However, the RNG in TBoI is WAY too controlling of your enjoyment of the game. I'm sure that this happened to all of us: a run that gave absolutely zero dps items and caused the fights to elongate to infinity. Hence why a good amount of players hold the R button until they get a good item in the first floor because they do not want to endure the potential cbt no damage ups run. Having the RNGesus decide whether you win or not is a very red flag, this is even worse when there are items or item combinations which can win you the game outright, like Dr. Fetus/Kamikaze/Ipecac + Pyromaniac, Brimstone + Homing, C Section + literally anything, the list goes on.
But your items isn't the only thing that is decided by RNG, the enemies are controlled by it as well. For example, enemies firing high speed tears in random directions without any telegraph whatsoever, a boss that can charge at you without warning, moving fast enough to go across the entire boss arena in less than a second or even a boss that can straight up teleport on you, the fact that the game can either spawn a Fistula-tier boss or one of the more complex regular bosses in Chapter 4, the list goes on. I cannot state how many times I felt like the game cucked me over. When you receive damage it is supposed to be your fault, not the game's but I feel like 35% of the times I received damage it was because I got bad RNG.

This is by far my biggest problem with the game and it is quite massive. Many other problems are slight and listing them will iterally take ages, so I'll pick some of them:

-Edmund still didn't fix Hush's bug where the delay between attacks below 40% is increased dramatically (after supposedly it being a bug)
-The existence of: Lumps, Walking Hosts, Willo (flies that circle around you), every single spider enemy (except the Trite), The Bloat, Mask + Heart enemy, Mask of Infamy, Imps, Bulbs, all Clotty variants, Camilo Jr., Needle and it's Ashpit variant, Rag Mega, Triple Grimace, Blue Champion Gurdy Jr., The Pile, Mama Gurdy, Mr. Fred, The Scourge, Delirium, Super and Ultra Pride

Ommiting that, the game has some good points, that being that it is quite enjoyable when you get a good roll, and having a good amount of challenge characters allows veterans of the game to not get bored.

Overall it's a 7/10

TL;DR
i recommend, has an infinite amount of replay value, but it's heavy dependance on RNG brings it down by a bunch

This life changing game full of profound concepts, stories of misery, solitude and amazing storytelling is the best game I've played so far. Brilliant work!

My most memorable memory of this game is when I went to fight the Four Kings while listening to the entire Markipiler FNaF playlist and the first king appeared right as the FNaF 1 animatronic in door sound effect played. Can't say it didn't fit the situation.

I like this game.

In this game play as a cicada on drugs that's somehow able to deflect complex enemy attack combinations by chirping at them, while getting rid of a corrupt government, whose one of the figureheads is a man that strips himself naked in the middle of the fight and becomes a lightning rod, because his massive ABS are MADE OUT OF COPPER.

13/10 best game, would get electrocuted again, in real life preferably

This game takes a very complex section of rocket science and simplifies it very nicely so that it's a nice gentle slope of learning. I'm at sopho, so this is way beyond my current capabilities (i take extended math/physics), but the way this game is built makes me understand it rather quickly.
