Anti-consumer, anti-gameplay space simulator. Doing anything interesting requires a foundation of HUNDREDS of hours of unfun grind. After over a decade of refusing to listen to the community, the recent pay-to-win update is the final nail in the coffin confirming that the developers and/or the executives behind this game do not give a single ♥♥♥♥ about you or your enjoyment. The only thing keeping me playing this game is my incredibly niche affinity for space sim with none of the available alternatives suitable to me.

This company's biggest failure, Odyssey, is a broken mess that offers little to the game but more space to grind. Walking on planets is not interesting if the only thing you do on planets is engage in a buggy and repetitive gameplay loop. If they had listened to the community, they could have easily satisfied players by delivering space legs within ships. It's astounding to me how the prospect of space legs is something that has been anticipated with a zeal almost on the order of Half-Life 3 and yet Frontier found a way to disappoint us immeasurably anyway.

I think the Thargoid war would have been a great addition to the game, if not for the hours of material and blueprint grinding you'd need to have a decent impact in the war. I was lucky to already have a blank cheque and starter material to be ready to fight thargoids within almost a week of preparation, I cant imagine anyone starting this game from the start hoping to fight thargoids. What's mind-boggling is the level of disrespect associated with Frontier's answer to this very problem. "Oh, you paid 26 dollars and our gameplay is astoundingly terrible to chew through in order to get to the fun stuff? Don't worry ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, just give us EVEN MORE money and we'll let you skip it!" Providing this option, clearly, is Frontier's acknowledgement that their grindy gameplay is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ass. This is something that ought not be REWARDED, are you insane?

I have been struggling for years to get my friends to play this game with me, and they've tried, they've given me so much patience I can only be grateful for, but this game offers nothing to them but grind, grind, grind, and more grind. Which could be attributed as a lack of interest in such gameplay loops rather than the fault of the game design, if it weren't for the fact that these very friends are crazy for grind games, games that make the grind fun and interesting, something Frontier needs to work on.

The foundation of this game is impeccable, the flight systems, the immersion, the simulated economy, the sound design itself being the best I've heard in almost any game period. And yet after 650 hours I find myself having to not recommend this to anyone who values their time because this game has cemented itself as nothing but a time-sink. A "taking mind-bogglingly long quantities of time to cross important points of interest to get things done, completely unrewarding compensation for missions, hours of resource gathering on barren plains of nothing, forgetting one important component in your ship for mining after spending 30+ minutes getting to a ring system that MAYBE will give you a fighting chance of a decent yield" type of time-sink.
